"Bluray" copies.

Happened with me too but for sound. aXXo was/is great on the PC, but the audio was no good on the HT system. Had to change all to 5.1 Dolby Digital rips.

I know I'm going off-topic but are the rips worth?
I mean I've always used original (or copied with no addtional compression) DVD's or ACD's and I personally am a little paranoid about compression... This is my first day here so I'm not sure if we have any topics here about compressions, but if we don't, would someone be able to share his/her experience with ripping/compression?

Thanx!

Nothing is off topic. All are here to help each other. The rips are worth it indeed. aXXo is famous for his/her/their quality rips in 700 MB files. PQ is excellent one can say and SQ is very good in 5.1 Dolby, but no DTS in these rips. IMHO DTS is way better than Dolby...

Finally, some/most of these movies never even make their way to India so even if you want to watch in a theater or want a personal copy there is no way/means to get it other than these rips. Unless of course you travel abroad a lot or have someone visiting on a regular basis...

Thanx Bro!
I did college in the US and have many friends as well as sis there so they buy DVD's for me... I prefer DVD's from the US 'cuz even the original ones here seldom have DTS audio, and as you said, it's far better than Dolby Digital 5.1...
Hey! Can i PM you some time?
Thanx again!

Sure PM me anytime. I have a sister in California and a sister-in-law in Colorado Springs who are my primary sources for all things electronic, DVDs, etc. Only problem is having to carry them for such a distance and also the waiting involved for them to make their next trip...

Now of course the world is moving towards Blu-Ray and HD. Let's see if I can source similar Blu-Ray copies in this city...

Bought a Blue Ray copy in Ritchie Street, the guy was fair enough and told me clearly "Sir, these direct copies of original and not really Blu Ray copies but people call it Blu Ray copies bcos the quality is better"

Bought Kill Bill 2 and the clarity is 100% as an original DVD when upscaled and played in my PV8. PQ aint Blu Ray HD one but its worth it.

I paid 150 rs for it.

I am going to Chennai tomorrow and would like to check this out. Where is Burma Bazar in Chennai and which shops are these? If I ask for BR discs, do they show these 'copies' by default? Thanks.

I know this is a bit late for your 'tomorrow' visit. Burma Bazar is a set of seedy shops that line the railway track starting from near the 'Parrys' building in what is called the 'Town' area. This is the northern end of Chennai near the Chennai Beach Station on the local trains.

Chennai: Burma Bazaar, Chennai Tourist Places to Visit for Shopping

I must give you a couple of warnings. Burma Bazar has nothing to do with Burma though originally the government allotted Burmese refugees shop space here for their livelihood. The shops have be taken over by 'nefarious' traders who sell all kinds of things there. Before the economy opened up, Burma Bazar was doing well as that was a place to get perfumes, liquor, cloth, chocolates, baby feeds, etc. With the economy opening up, these people have lost most of their trade to supermarket and malls.

Today Burma Bazar sells stuff that are mostly fake. If you are a first time visitor, these people will recognize you and ply you with attractive products and prices from blue films, to 'genuine' Canon camera to a 100 inch LCD TV. The shop keepers have assistants who stand on the footpath, and they have no hesitation in grabbing you by the hand and whispering into your ears about all kinds of things. I have offered everything from porno to drugs and women here.

Walk through Burma Bazar carefully. Keep a tight rein on your spending and purse, and be ready to come home and have a bath.

Against all this, I usually trudge through Burma Bazar once a month for the sheer excitement of seeing what is available there. I leave my purse. mobile phone and all papers in the car so even if I am pick-pocketed, I loose just a few coins. It is fun to see these guys manufacturing DVDs there. The sheer numbers are amazing. Last week I saw over ten thousand copies of 'genuine' Gahjini with a few days of it's release. One shopkeeper was telling me that all the copies will be sold in just a day or two. We never learn do we?

Recently I have started going there by train.

Cheers

Hi Shailender,

After seeing this post, I went and bought the discs(bluray transferred to DVD) in the afternoon. Per disc they charged 190rs. Titles included Independence Day, Lara Craft Tomb Raider and Blood Diamond.put it on sony ps3 connected toSony 40" lcd tv...Excellent picture quality and sound. Compared to normal dvd, its ten times better and very near to blu ray picture quality. With this price, i think its really a great buy. I am planning to buy other titles also since I am very much satisfied.

Trivandrum

The dvd spec is like this :720480 (NTSC) or 720576 (PAL).
Now how will a blu-ray copy look better than an original dvd made from the master ? The discs thus made have to meet the dvd spec right ? So they are scaled down to the dvd spec. How different is this scaling down compared to the scaling down from the master while they make the original dvd ? Does not make any sense to me
Renjith, did you pick these up from the bhima palli area in Trivandrum ?

Ya, i bought it from Beemapalli only..paid 190rs for the same...but now stopped buying the same since started collecting original bluray discs...

Okay guys here is an interesting update, went to Burma Bazzar and bought the Blu Ray copies of Wall-E and Kill Bill. Trust me, the quality is just amazing even compared to my original Kill Bill DVD (not D/L).

Here is the comparison between both.

Wall-E Blu Ray Copy

130 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 96 kbps
131 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 96 kbps
132 AC3 3/2, 48 kHz, 384 kbps
133 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 192 kbps
134 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 192 kbps

Kill Bill 2 - Original DVD

137 AC3 3/0, 44.100000000000001 kHz, 224 kbps
GSpot Viewer shows DTSs audio as: 768 kb/s

1. Can someone translate this info to English :)?
2. Though Wall-E has DTS I am not able to find it when view the DVD info using Mpeg Stream Clip. I was not able to use GSpot bcos it shows only 4 audio chennal info whereas Wall-E blue copy has 7 different audio tracks

Blu Ray copy was 190 rs
Original DVD copy was 60 rs (I tried loading this in my lappy, it showed copy protect error, wow they made copy including the copy protect )

Assuming these are Chinese, they are running a major scam by manufacturing DVD-5 (single layer DVDs) or DVD-9 (Dual Layer DVDs) copies and putting the BluRay branding/signage on the packaging using AVCHD format.

Simplest way to test a BR copy (though I don't attest to this means at all) is to ensure the disk capacity is 25GB.

so Wall-e is dual layer copy and KB is single.

The best audio is available for KB (128 AC3 3/2, 48 kHz, 448 kbps) which roughly translates to 128 Kbps wav file quality.

To copy multi-channel high res music, each independent channel has to be copied over per the lead. Obviously they copied 4 out of 7 channels of almost mp3 quality music. Also they seem to have forgotten the DTS stream

I experimented with this fake BR disc a couple of weeks back. Got "The Patriot" for 120 bucks. It is a DVD 9 media with better bit rate, but the PQ is SD. Compared to the regular pirated dvds this one is much better.

My PhilipsDVD player recognizes the DTS in the DVD. I think its the problem with GSpot tool. It shows only 4 channels. Since the DVD has 7 channel, I am not able to read the bit rate for channel 5,6,7. But for the KB DVD it shows 2 channel, one is a the AC3 Dobly and the other is DTS

YOu did not mention this earlier so I thought the stream was missing completely. DTS is not 7 channel though. The neo is 6 channels (matrixed).

My bad :), thats what i meant by GSpot shows only 4 channels as its not capable of showing 7.

Is there anyway I can find the DTS bitrate of the Bluray copy?

Hi,

The AVCHD format referred above, can these fake BD copies be played on normal regular DVD players, or they need bluray players? Ultimately, the fake BD needs MPEG-2 encoding to play in DVD players I think (??). Of course if it is at higher bit rate, the quality may be much better

They are nothing but DVD9, Dual Layer disk and they play well in the regular player. Infact, as I said before the quality is better compared to the original D/L disks I have.

They convert HD format to fit in DVD9. Here is an explanation on how they do it:
