Bought Emotiva BasX S12

Congrats. Please post first impression. We understand it would require some breaking in. Still if you have connected it, would love to hear your opinion. Did you audition it first & bought? Eager to know the experience...

Thanks all!

I was in the lookout for a sub in 30k range and was keen to check out new BasX Series. Went to HT Store and only S12 was there in demo. S10 yet to come. It was connected to Denon AVR and we played few demo tracks. Fronts were Dali new series floorstanders. Overall we were happy when played few music tracks and movie parts.

Velodyne impact and Taga looked quite smaller units when placed near Bas X S12. The build quality of Emotiva was much superior.
S10 MRP is 32k, S12 is 39K. All the stock is expected only after GST billing.
I have bought the S12 for 33k with 3 yrs warranty. It was just unpacked for demo for a week. Front grill, manual all in fresh cover itself. So it is like brand new only with little breakin happened for a week. Did not want to pay more after the new billing rule. I found this price much reasonable for a 12inch 300W sub and took the subwoofer home !

I have connected the sub in my setup and the initial impression is just awesome !!!

This is the spec from the user manual
Amp : High efficiency class D
Power : 300Watts RMS
Frequency response: 25Hz - 200Hz ( +/-3db)
Inputs : LFE or summed left and right, unbalanced
Controls : Crossover, Phase, Volume
Dimensions: 17.25inch high x 16.75inches wide x 18.25 inches deep.
Weight : 22Kg ( 48.5 lbs )

The bass port is slot type on rear.

Build : The build quality is excellent compared to the other subs in this price bracket. The rear panel is simple with minimal control. Power mode switch has On, Auto and Off. Very heavy and size is huge.

RX-V477 subout is connected to S12 with bluerigger subwoofer cable.
Sub setting:
Placement: Placed infront of Front L. I don't have space on either side of L or R.
Volume : 50% ( 12'0 clock position)
Phase : 0
Crossover : Maximum ( LFE )

Ran YPAO and AVR set the parameters:
Sub : Use
Front : Large
Center : Small
Cross over : 100Hz

Sub level : +2.5db

Listened to few songs and I have changed the sub level to +5 db, Fronts to small keeping the sub volume 50% itself. Cross over kept at 100Hz ( Will experiment the recommened 80Hz ).

Music: After changing the level I had the feeling that diamond 220 has become so huge and the sound stage was too good. I couldn't make out the bass was from subwoofer, rather I felt the 2 bookshelf was playing with great bass. Played "Bass I love you basstronics" and it was just shaking everything with plenty of low end. Played few classical and malayalam songs with and it was really giving me that quality thump. These songs do not have very low frequency, but I think the mid bass output from the sub was really good. I am so happy the way it is doing for music so far. It wasn't localized bass or boomy at all. In fact the sub is more enjoyable in my living room with the above setting than in demo room. Wife has the same opinion.

Movies : Watched the Dark knight opening scene in blu ray. The real power and bass came in to play here. I have turned down the volume little.it was so good and we could really feel around us. Now I know how much I have been missing.

Initial feedback : It is a well built sub with excellent performance for movies and music. I had the feeling that 12inch sub may be too much for my living room. But I think i have made the right decision and even with lower volume levels it is working great in my setup.
This should be in the demo list If you are planning to buy sub below 50k range.

From where did you buy it? From the photograph, it looks like you are also using Wharfedale speakers. I am also using Diamond 225s and ordered 220c as center. Still deciding on the sw. Does this sw go well with Wharfedales? Currently, I have Taga Harmony & Polk in mind for sw.
PS: It looks like we both posted at the same time :) Thanks for the details.

Yes. Fronts and subwoofer need not be from same brand. Any sub can be integrated with proper setting. I haven't heard Taga. Heard Polk psw125/550 and was not impressed.

I recently heard SVS PB2000 & PB1000. PB1000 was not at all good but PB2000 was much better. It was boomy for me but not to the extent of pb1000. It seems all ported sub's are a bit boomy. I want a sub which is punchy & tight. Do you think I will like Emotiva BASX s12?

Here in Mumbai No dealer having this sub. Unable to audition. Want to place an order but with out audition seems very risky.

Consider SVS Sb 1000/2000 if you don't like ported slubs ; though I found Pb 2000 to be a very good Sub especially for movies.
Sunfire, Dali & Velodyne are other options you can consider.

If you didn't like Polk 550 don't bother about Buying Taga SW 10, Polk is much precise and tight over Taga.

Velodyne impact 10 or 12 was in my list as these are all in 30k range.

Impact 10 : 150 W RMS / 14kg/ 32Hz- 140Hz
Impact 12 : 165W RMS / 15Kg / 29Hz- 140Hz

I heard impact 10 before and it was ok and doing justice to its size and spec. The build quality was not so great and not at par with BasX series.
I felt it is suitable for smaller listening area and may not fill a large living room. Another issue was with Auto on feature. Few users reported the sub is not coming out of standby if bass signal is weak and it makes "thud" sound when coming from standby to on. Recently one amazon user posted the same issue. It looks to be a known issue with the impact series. I think we need to step up to EQMax or higher range for the good build quality.

BasX S12 was much superior in build quality and performance. Emotiva is giving more value for the price. As per the dealer, they are offering same warranty as in US , 3yrs ( I think 3 yrs for driver and 2 yrs for electronics)
The only thing missing is emotiva brand logo in the front..

Few clarifications needed regarding the sub usage.

1) Should I use voltage stablizer for Subwoofer ? Currently it is connected directly in surge protector and not to the stablizer (
There is UPS inverter backup.

2) I have set the On/Off/Auto switch in"ON" position so that sub is always on.
There is another main power switch at the rear panel and I am switching it on for using the sub and switching it off, then switch off the main power. Is this the right way or Can I keep the power switch in on position so that the sub will be On when main power is turned on?

As per the readings and user feedback PB-1000 is good for movies. It goes much lower freq. Some users and FMs who heard pb-1000 reported the same. It was missing the punch due to weaker midbass. I think the sub is tuned like that.

BasX S10 and S12 are ported, but it is slot-loaded design and not the regular round port. My understanding from reading is that slot design has advantage of less port noise and give more tighter bass. The slot is on rear side extending across the width on bottom. It is not boomy in my living room. My music listening has become more enjoyable now. I am also told that next batch will come only after GST billing. So I suggest you to wait and audition.
There is a S12 review in avsforum which shows the measured freq response in line with what emotiva published.

This is what Dan laufman, President Emotiva Audio Corp. has posted on Emotiva forum.

BasX12 = SB-2000 in terms of practical performance and build quality....
$399.00 vs. $699.00 You save $300.00!! No brainer.

Taga Harmony Platinum SW-10 v2 also has similar design to what you have described abt Emotiva BasX S10/12.. Wasn't aware of the port advantages..But if it is better, then fine..

Does anyone own BASX s10? How's it?

I'm in a dilemma to choose among the following.

1) Emotiva BASX s10
2) Velodyne Impact 12
3) Polk DSW550wi

Please suggest if any other subwoofer is good. I am ambitious about a sub that is above 175W RMS and goes below 30Hz.

FM "rpanand25" own BasX S10. Pls refer the thread below.

I could not demo S10 due to unavailability. But I can say that S12 is way much better than 2 and 3 in every aspects.

Hi all
I am also in a lookout for a sub below 30k. I had shortlisted Polk PSW125, DSW 550WI, Wharfedale D10 (since I have Wharfedale floor standers). I couldn't audition these 3 because of their non availability for demo. I called HTStore for the recommendation, Mr. Lokesh advised me to go for Velodyne impact 12 mk 2 or Emotiva Basx 12 which he had for demo. Subsequently I auditioned both Velodyne & Emotiva, I was looking for basx 10 which was not available for demo. According to my experience Velodyne sounded boomy & shaky, Emotiva was perfect. The bass was tight and low but I felt it lacked some power. I also felt that their Dali fronts were overpowering the sub, volume settings were not adjusted properly.
Since I am looking for BasX 10 (12 incher will be too huge for me), how does that differ from the basx 12. My living room is about 14 x 22 ft with openings.

1. Will the 10 inch version suffice for my setup?
2. Does it sound good in my place rather than the demo room?
3. I have a Polk 8inch 50Watt RMS with me now, does it really make difference with Emotiva basx 10 200watt?

Experts please suggest me.
