Carrying AVR in cabin bag

Hello,

I can see some useful information in other threads about packing information etc to get the AVR in checkin luggage.

I wanted to check the possibility of getting this inside the cabin bag itself.
I have purchased Denon 1713 in USA and planning to carry back.
It will weigh around 8kg so I should be ok with weight I believe :)

Other posts have given me good idea about getting this in checked baggage but would like to see if I can keep it with me all time as it will be a connecting flight :)

Are there any restrictions regarding carrying such electronic stuff in cabin?
Airline folks wont understand much so as to what is AVR etc.

Any suggestions/comments would be really helpful.

I am in the same quandary. My parents will be carrying a receiver to india and the entire receiver box fits well in the checkin bag but I have not tried to fit it in the cabin bag yet. I have bought the denon E300 but I might return it and buy the 1713 instead even though its an outgoing model. did you buy the 220v version? what do you plan to do with customs duty? would be great if you could share your plan.
 
Well i bought my Denon 1713 same way and my friend carried it with him while coming back to India. They didn't allow him to take it with him in cabin luggage by saying that such electronic doesn't qualify as a cabin luggage. They have rule that such electronics item, if you are carrying, needs to be declared at the ticket counter itself. This allow them to keep them safely along with the other fragile items. My friend picked it up at the airport back here and they put it back in the the empty suitcase he was carrying to avoid any issue at the customs. I received my AVR without a nick on the box it was packed in (the one from Denon). However make sure that you stick a 2-3 big note on the box "ELECTRONICS ITEM-HANDLE WITH CARE". I hope this info might help you in some way.
 
elan13 is right.

Big Electronics like AVRs are not allowed in cabin luggage. You can very well pack it and keep in Check in luggage. I did it in the same way. I packed it well and sticked a note on it to handle with care.
More over you can also have your suitcase packed in a multi layer polythene cover and will be handled as a fragile item. They charge few bucks for that (some 3rd part guys used to do this).

Thanks all for your valuable replies, it was good heads up as I would not have been prepared for last minute refusal of getting it in cabin.
Now I will get this in check-in luggage mostly with the Denon box itself.

I havent thought much about customs. I will get the original receipt I received which says 340$ and thus I should be well under limit of 35k Rs.

I have got standard USA 120V model and planning to get the transformer mentioned somewhere on this forum: SHAH ELECTRONICS - 220V / 110 V Step Down Transformers & 220V / 110V with Built in Stabilizer

Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Not sure if 220V model is available in USA.

BTW, what are the chances of some items in your luggage getting lost if you mark it 'ELECTRONIC ITEM'? Just a thought came to mind, that by marking it specifically, are we inviting trouble? :P If not AVR, can someone just sneak small items like perfume etc?

How useful is the polythene protective wrap if the bag is going to be opened by TSA?(I have read many cases where they inspected the checkin bag and put back everything with a note saying they opened it).

Yes. A 220v version is available in the USA. I returned the Denon E300 purchased from Amazon and I have ordered Denon 1713 instead to avoid hassles of voltage and frequency conversion.
There's a limit to the amount of liquid you can carry in your cabin bag so look out for that.

I was about to purchase a pioneer 822 K online and saw your message here. Do you know, where to get the 220v Denon 1713 online in US as you mentioned ? Please reply fast as Im returning soon

What you can do is after check in ask for the oversize / delicate items counter ( most airlines have a common one), the chap scans your boarding card tags the item. It is put in cargo, but in a different container to prevent damage. On landing collect from staff in arrivals. Have got back glass this way. Should not be a problem if the avr is ints original packing as there is enough protection anyway.
Pls remember : some airlines charge / refuse the service, so pls call and check.

Most if the AV receiver sold in US takes only NTSC signal as video input. So, I got confused whether to buy these from US. So we have 2 issues

1. Power and freq
2. Video input signal format to AVR.

Im not sure if the 2nd issue can be overcome.

The issue with cabin baggage is the weight also as most airlines allow 7 KG only as cabin baggage. It is better to pack in the suitcase well with thermocol and bubble wrap (if it not an original packing). I brought a18 KG Pioneer SX 780 from Singapore this way and there was no problem in the transit.
 
I will be receiving my Onkyo TX-NR626 on Nov 9th,,so excited and thrilled...

But,,My friend who is bringing this is so afraid that he may need to pay for customs/extra weight..however the receiver costs 566 USD inclusive of sales tax and shipping,so i guess it will be under the 35K limit ?

Also he have no idea how to bring it,,whether in a suitcase (need to purchase a hard-case suitcase , any suggestions on cheap suitcases just to put the receiver in ?) or just with the original packing..

Will the original packing invite the custom officials to have a check ?

Hi... yes, Can the poster reply how the AVR import worked for him ? I refrained from this due to the firmware differences across the globe. I purchased pioneer 823K in UK and tried all the settings, there was no option to Switch NTSC/ PAL etc. But the Singapore or , international version etc has this feature.

Also I saw that NewEgg.com is the best place to get AVR in US. Pioneer 823K is just 150 bucks ie 10,000 Rs. If the AVR works here, then it is worth importing without warranty. they have extremely good deals ongoing for Yamaha , Denon AVR which people mainly buy.

Apart from warranty issue is the component may be coming off the circuit board, when a big throw of the baggage is done.

If the price difference is atleast 50% less than in India, then it is better to buy form US. Otherwise no big deal as we have to depend on AVR for many years and requires proper power supply etc.
