I'm seriously thinking of building a small tapped horn powered sub using the 7 inch Exodus Anarchy mid woofer( which has an Xmax of 25 mm) sold by Kevin Haskins of diycable. I bought a Shiva XBL2 from him a couple of years ago and am about to order this driver.

There is a lot of info on the web about a compact design using this driver on both AVS forum and Hometheatershack. This link has detailed designs for it.

It looks like being a big bang for a small buck and thanks Sunil for nudging me in this direction.

GeorgeO, Nice! So this is for the HT room? They say it is meant to be used with low powered amps. Have you identified what plate amp you will be using with this build?

Hmm...another Tapped Horn... Try with a combination of 2 or 4 for even response in the room, not sure, I feel, a single sub will not give you a room filling experience as your room is not closed.

Sunilji what is the status of your horn sub. We will discuss as I am going to build a horn sub for car audio.

An amp rated 50-80w to get the best out of it, a class D is preferred.

At this point this is sub No 4, so I dont have a shortage of powered subs!

I have 3 plate amps( from 200-350 watts) which are not mounted on the enclosures, but into small wooden boxes, so I may play around with one of these and decide what amp I finally need. Apex Jr has some value for money but heavy plate amps that run off 220V, I have their Apex Senior, as well as a Keiga and an O Audio Bash 500.

George,

What is the point in doing 7" subs? This is neither here nor there, though gives you fun of building. Also you are not short on space either at your place. Did you complete the Shiva sub?

Cheers.

These are best suited for music as it will have deep and fast bass (distortion-less) and these excel in mid bass \ low-mid where most of the punch in the music lies. More over the build is not so complex and economical too. A music setup with one for Left/Right will be a good match. Assumption: This will be a good match for the single driver fullrange setups like fostex or similar drivers.

Hi Anil

This one is just for fun! I've done sealed and passive radiator subs and thought I would do a small TH for fun. I might pass it on to my brother in law for his HT system after keeping it next to my home computer for some time...Shivais almost done hopefully will be in the next few days the box is ready and all I need to do is to wire it up and put three or four bushes on the base.

Probably you are right. I am slightly averse to adding a subwoofer to a music setup as it introduces additional crossover and amp components into a perfectly two channel setup. For example if I need to add this sub to my Pass Amp + Fostex setup, where there is no crossover, I am forced to add a crossover+amp (plate amp maybe) combo. Maybe it is worth, but my BLH fostex is decent in it's bass and don't miss much.

Soundnovice: Plate amps have variable crossover settings, so depending on the application I may decide.

Sajith: I dont have a single driver speaker at this time, but I do have an MTM for 2 channel audio that is a bit lacking in bass, which I am augmenting with an old sub. I may play around with this low cost sub implementation, with the added benefit of doing a tapped horn design.

Anil: Let me complete the design and then you decide( over single malt/wine and BBQ) if the proof of the pudding is worth it? Actually one key reason is that I dont have any desire to bring any more heavy 12 inch drivers across in checked in baggage after the Shiva-which nearly wrenched my right arm out of its socket!
The driver was ordered last night and I hope to have it ferried across by a young willing mule( a nephew) by the first week of next month.

Anil, your DIY Fostex 206 based BLH is one of the best single driver speaker I have heard. I agree it makes ample bass and does not required augmentation.

George, which MTM is this? Is this the Audax drivers based MTM in your HT? I think moving them a bit towards the corners may help, though not very sure since there are no rear walls. All the best for your build. Saw those links, looks good. Could you share the links for driver details please?

Santhosh

Yes I agree Anil's BLH makes very impressive bass-in fact the first time I heard it I assumed the sub was also connected until he told me otherwise!

The MTM I referred to is my AriaR in my living room which I plan to shift out once my new MTM is up and ready. It performs very well in the mids and highs but not so in the lows.
