Denon AVR aka piece of crap

You pay money for a particular product expecting certain functions and durability. If you get that, you get what you paid for. Nothing extra. I believe, there is no need to talk about how great my avr/ speaker is. You paid for a 5.1 system and you are getting a 5.1 output, there is nothing extra offered to you. If you have paid for a 5.1 and getting 7.1 output (lol) then one could have posted a + review.

However, when you are deprived of certain quality service etc. then one must post his reviews so that other buyers can at least be beware of the situation.

10 people are having issues with Denon and may be 100000 people are 100% satisfied with Denon. But did these 10 people pay anything less? Why should one suffer.

And reviews/ feedback/ suggestions here are much better than any paid up reviews somewhere else.

People should post reviews. No questions there.

My post was directed to the people looking to buy a receiver. Point being, do consider the negative reviews, but dont be scared off a purchase decision solely based on negative reviews. Consider the holistic picture. Simply because you will find some or the other negative review for almost every AVR out there

Thanks for sharing the same, not only you there are other members also who were so against denon.
I was thinking to go for x2000 but opted for yamaha 675.

How is performance of yamaha 675 compared to X 2000? I hope that you took demo of both

Atlast my Denon 1612 stopped working yesterday. It will power on, hdmi switching, GUI works, but no audio, just some hissing and pop sounds through the speakers. It can be brought back to life after servicing, but I am not at all interested in going through all the hassles of getting it serviced.

If any one wants this for a dirt cheap price (I am expecting 6K+shipping charge only) I will open a FS thread. You can either service it or do a DIY to make an excellent 5 channel amp.

Hello Baiju,

I can feel your pain, really. I know that feeling all too well with my Panasonic TV under service for the past 9 months with no recourse!!!

At last I have managed to order a replacement board (Digicom Board) for it. Hopefully I will get a working one!!!

I understand the pain you are going thru. I would say do not give up so easily. I know you have had a tough time with this bleeding you AVR but do not give up so easily.

Anyway try to finally find out which is the problem, the HDMI board or the pre out or some other board.... Get a full board replacement instead of a parts fix.

Who knows it might sort the problem out?

I know I am ranting but just thought I would say what I thought.

Vinod

Hi Vinod, I can get it serviced may be for some 5K that includes to and fro shipping. I already spent some 8K on this AVR for servicing, most of the expense is the shipping charge. Now I wonder why I went for these expensive gears, that old 5.1 box was more than enough for my use.

Try repairing always at some place who are experts. As I feel I made a mistake by selling off my old onkyo htr990thx to my friend for DIY. It never was playing any sound, but I too had bypassed the preamp section to make it a 7 channel power amp. He agreed for 3 k( paid me 1k, never gave the rest;). Sadly(!!) he got the volume control IC, shipped from US. And now, he owns a THX 7.1 stuff for just 1000 bucks!

Forgot to add one thing, I didn't get the reciever new, got it used for 14k 3 years back. So it's not a big loss like yours;)

I also found the similar kind of problem like blinking the red light. I bought mine in April 2012 and within few months (can't remember the exact month, have to check). Then it was on warranty so got the service free of cost. Nowadays I am facing the similar problem again, however what I noticed If I try to switch on the AVR immediately after switching the power, I face the blinking issue. But after switching the power if I give a break of few minutes it works flawlessly.

Regarding the sound issue, I faced similiar issues and then switch off-on is the only option I follow. Interestingly, then If I switch on power and AVR simultaniously, did not face the red light blinking issue.

Denon should really take care of this issue, I am sure I am not going for Denon AVR in future when I will upgrade.

I think one should connect the avr to Internet and get software updates that might have many fixes.

This I think is a common problem with 1612 model. Anyway, no more Denon in the future for me.

Baiju,

If you are based in kerala, then i can recommend a techician who repairs only denon product with top class service and reasonable cost. Friend of mine had excellent experience with his denon product repair wherein the original service centre refused to repair due to non availability of spares. Pls share your location, blv me its worth trying rather than dedicating your pocket to courier guys.

I think this might be a good bet. Better to give to a person who is an expert and with whom you can coordinate and tell him exactly what the problem is.

I feel that you should take this chance. Also once you meet him and speak to him, you might be able to better judge how good he is.

I would rather you not sold the AVR for a cheap price and regret it later.

THE PROBLEM NOW A DAYS IS THAT NOBODY WANTS TO MAKE MONEY THE HARD WAY. TAKE SERVICING FOR EXAMPLE. NOBODY I MEAN NOBODY WANTS TO DO CHIP LEVEL SERVICING. SO WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT IN MOST SERVICE CENTRES YOU HAVE KIDS WHO HAVE DEGREES IN TECHNICAL SERVICING BUT ZILCH KNOWLEDGE TO ACTUALLY FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. SO ALL THEY DO IS REMOVE AND REPLACE. Try asking them what the exact problem was and they give you a blank stare!!! :)

I am talking about the average service centre here, not the specialist audiophile service tech who is usually not accessible for the general customer.

You are right vinod,

Last year, we got a problem with our sony car audio player. The authorized service centre replaced the eye of player costing 2800 rs for a player worth less than 10k and the problem persisted. Later, we approached on audiophile technician ( i got a friend who does professional theaters and recently the kerala state electricity board wandered all around in search of him to recover the power generator after blast) through reference. He got amused listening to our story anf repaired it for 250 bucks. Moreover he asked us to bring the old eye for a reasonable cost so that he could serve other customers due to non availabilty of spares. Bang for buck!

July 2013 - I was watching a movie in the night. After an hour when I felt the volume is high I pressed the volume down button and instantly there is no sound at all. All other functions were working but no volume. Resetting the microprocessor didn't help. I could hear crackling and hissing sound the speakers. Frustrated I turned off the avr. Next morning when I tested it started working again.

I had the same problem with my Denon 3803, 2 years back. I remember, it happened in couple of occasions. First, there was no audio from the receiver. I inserted phono jack in phones port and removed it to see if audio output is there. Nothing worked. Latter, tried master reset. It worked like a charm. In another occasion, there was sharp crackling sound from the speakers instead of audio output. I turned-off and turned-on after few minutes, there was no crackling sound thereafter...Till today, My receiver works flawlessely. I run my receiver long-hours and I never had problem with it. I am planning to upgrade my receiver soon and I will definitely opt for Denon receivers.
Note: I always provide enough breathing space for my receiver.

I was curious to know more about Red Blinking Light and I found this video that has a fix. But, it's a different model...Denon AVR788 AVR-788 AVR 788 Blinking Red Light Fix - YouTube

Hi fellow members,
I was in a mood to purchase Denon X1000 next week. But saw this forum and made me rethink and scared. In the budget AVR (20 to 40k) , does any one recommend any reliable models among: Onkyo/Marntz/Denon ?

thanks in advance ...

hg

Eventhough I won't suggest a Denon anymore, it is upto you to decide which AVR you want to go for. The problem may be specific to this particular model. The important thing is to ensure that you have access to a service center close by.

@[email protected] - please send me the address of the technician.

Baiju,

I've P.M d you..

@humveeguy: Pls also check marantz and Yamaha. Regarding Onkyo, many end users complaint about frequent hardware failure, cant comment as i have not used it yet.

@humveeguy - Marantz is sister concern of Denon and share lot of their design with them. As I put in the first page of this thread, I have faced similar red blinking problems with my marantz avr and my hdmi board went kaput.Current models are incremental updates to the problematic models so there is no guarantee the problem is fixed. As such, I would suggest staying away from both marantz and denon. I used yamaha avr as replacement and never faced a single problem and will highly recommend it. Have onkyo htb in the past, again with no problems, so will recommend it as well.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
