Have a 40 inch sammy lcd tv(B650 series).has a great picture quality but lackluster audio quality. So have been using Altec Lans ATP3 as the speaker system for it.Although not a high end system(not even close),still like it's audio quality. Was thinking about upgrading to logitec's Z2300 or Creative Gigaworks T3 2.1 Speaker.

So do you think it's a good idea to go with these computer speakers? If so which one ----- logitec's Z2300 or Creative Gigaworks T3 2.1 Speaker
primary use:-movies.Also occasional gaming(ps3).no music whatsoever

Try getting the MX5021's from Altec if they are available now. Or else see if you can stretch to the new Octane series from Altec.
Another good option would be Edifier S730, but they are EXPENSIVE.
What's your budget?

It will be solely used to for movies and games not music. So is it a good idea to go for mx5021 over z2300 & other speakers i mentioned?

My budget is upto 17k

if you can extend it a bit you can get Logitech z5500 or Onkyo HTIB 3100... somewhere between 19 - 21 k .. you can get better price too....

You can go for Logitech Z2300 @ 7k or Logitech Z5500 @ 16k.
PS: I have two coupons from Yatra.com offering 10% discount on Logitech products. PM me if you need them (FCFS offer:ohyeah:)

If your going 2 channel then go audioengine a2 rather than z2300 you'll be happier in the longer run.

Don't want a 5.1.Not that i don't like it but my room doesn't have the space for it.Coming to the audioengine a2 and a5 do you think it's much better than z2300 or Gigaworks T3 for movies and gaming. After all a5 doesn't come with a subwoofer right? Also another system i came across the web is Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra MX6021.How are these and are they available here?

Audioengine give very good sq, have proper mdf cabinets like expensive speakers but at a smaller size. a2 or a5 is even better if your budget allows. It will pay itself off over the years giving you sq that cant be touched by logitech/creative.Rather buy quality once and keep it for many years to come.you can add a subwoofer to a5 or a2 at a later time.Don't be fooled by the one frequency boomy crappy subs creative offers in its 2.1 its all marketing.

So dropped the idea of gettin logitech and creative speakers and narrowed down my choice to A2,A5 and Edifier S730.
Okay so outta these two which which one should i go for ? Audioengine 2 costs ard 10k while A5 costs twice that much(19.5k) Is it worth spending extra 9.5k and get the A5 or just get the A2 ? Will it produce a noticeable difference(worth the diff in price) in sound quality while gaming, watching movies??Mind you i am no audiophile.Infact i have been using atp3 so far and pretty happy with it's performance as far as movies and gaming goes. Also what abt durability? do these last a long time? And what's the best way to connect these to lcd tv--via RCA or headphone jack?

Also how's A5 compared to Edifier S730? Have read a few reviews online.most say although S730 is not that good for music, they are pretty gud for movies.

Also do any of these need an external amplifier or receiver right? All these work out of the box? And are they magnetically shielded? Also what's the ideal placement for these speakers? Since these are heavy i will have to place them on the floor.is that setup okay or do i need to place them on top of wooden boxes or somethin?

And finally outta these three which should i choose?
Lookin for a speaker system that's durable, doesn't involve a complicated setup and sound great for movies/games.

If you are constrained for space (as is my case), I think you should consider the A2 above the A5s.

I've not personally listened to the A5s so I can't comment on how better they sound, but all the reviews I've read say that the A5s are pretty good. The A2s themselves sound pretty good except for an occasionally annoying midbass hump. This is not an issue with movies at all.

If you are thinking of A5s and you do have enough space, you can also think of a pair of entry-level Wharfedales (9.2?) + Norge 2060 combo. These will cost just a bit extra, but would sound a bit better (esp. for music). But then you'll have to manage two units (speakers & amp).

The A2s and A5s are active, so the amp is built in -- lesser components to place/manage. I think the Edifiers also have a built-in amp.

The A2s and A5s are magnetically shielded. You can place them right next to the TV or magnetically sensitive devices with no issues. And yep, they work right out of the box. I got only a pair of EP to EP cables with the A2s, so you will need to buy an EP to RCA (pair) cable or an RCA (pair) to RCA (pair) cable separately to connect them to the TV.

As I just mentioned, in the case of the A2s, you can connect them to the TV with either an EP to RCA (pair) cable or with a RCA (pair) to RCA (pair) cable. The A2s have two inputs -- EP socket and RCA pair. If your TV has variable outs you can control the volume from the TV's remote, or if your TV has fixed outs, you'll have to control the volume through the A2s.

The A5s, and especially the A2s, are best when they are at ear level (when you are in your viewing/listening) position. So you might need to place them on stands to elevate them, depending on whether you have space on your TV rack.

I'll confuse you a bit more :D and give you one more option at 10K: M-Audio Studiophile AV40 20W + 20W Powered Reference Monitors -
These (the M-Audio AV40s) are also supposed to be pretty good, and some people prefer these over the A2. I haven't listened to them personally but I think Thad E Ginathom uses these.

thanks
Sachin

Thx a ton hydra. That was very informative. So finally decided to go for A2s(And maybe when i move to a bigger house will get the A5's and use A2's as my computer speakers)

Hi Hydra, planning to get a lcd shortly and connect a bose 2.1(no remote, only volume pod). Do all present day TV(esp LCDs) come with a variable output? How do I know from the specs?

Regards.

I was sailing in the same boat a few weeks back as to which speakers to get for my lcd and laptop use. I auditioned some HTIB and some computer speakers like onkyo HTS 3300, 3200, Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra MX6021, Bose Companion 5 and Companion 3 series 2. Even considered a stereo set up like Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 + Norge Amp combo. Read a billion reviews and finally decided that aesthetically and due to space constraints i needed to buy a 2.1 set up. I wanted good bass and an all round system for movies and music. After a lot of reading and auditioning i went and ordered the RAZER MAKO 2.1 speaker system. I am very satisfied with the system i looks great and sounds good. Its got an 8 inch driver in the sub woofer so the bass is awesum, comes with a touch sensitive control pod. I bought it for 19k so if you can stretch your budget by 2k more i would highly recommend this system. It will fit on your table top and look there too. If you have any queries let me know. Cheers.

I remember reading a post on Techenclave made by a member who got a home demo in Hyderabad. If I remember right, he'd got the demo arranged though bajaao.com. Why don't you try the customer support number on Bajaao.com and ask them if they can get you a demo? In any case bajaao.com has a 14 day return policy. If you buy the speakers and you're not happy with them, you can return them within 14 days for a refund. See BAJAAO.COM - India - Buy & Review Musical Instruments in India - BAJAO
I bought my A2s from Bajaao.com about 2 months back and I'm pretty satisfied with the purchase experience.

I was planning the same when I bought my A2s :)

To give you a bit more info on using the A2s for movies, you should know that they don't put out a huge amount of bass. If you like listening to explosions and the sort with pretty heavy bass effects, the A2s are not for you. The A2s put out just the right amount of bass (in music terms) for the programme content to sound real. I was using *puts a sheet over head* a Creative 2.1 unit with the TV before I got the A2s. I must say the A2s don't disappoint me in terms of bass support at all. Dialogues are very clear (which was my most important criteria for the speakers) and background music, including passages with low frequency effects, come out very very well. Even for explosions and special effects I'm quite content.

If you later feel the need to augment the bass in your setup, you can always add a subwoofer to the A2s. The AS8 sub (also Audioengine) is supposed to pair very well with the A2s. Even otherwise, a little known thing about the A2s is that you can use the 3.5mm (EP) input to send signal to the line input of any active Sub (while using the RCA input to feed signal to the A2s). I've tried this out of curiosity it and it does work.

I'm not really sure about this but I don't think all LCDs come with variable output. In fact I use a (entry-level) Series 3 Sammy 32" LCD and it has only fixed outputs (Grrr...). Probably higher-end (I mean anything better than entry-level) LCDs have variable output. I'm not sure if the specs will show it. The way you can be most sure would be to ask the salesman and then check for yourself on the demo piece.

^Thx.

Regarding variable output, atleast all higher end sony's and sammy's have it.Anyway once you zero in on your tv, just google to find out whether the tv you're planning to purchase has it or not.
