Good New !!!! Tata Sky HD Set-up is now avaliable !!!

Hello all
It is a fact they are coming out with a HD recorder so I guess most of you people can afford it since "recorder" is a very useful tool as we are all sort of busy at some point in time !!!

So hold your purses and enjoy the fruit if you want to stick to a particular provider, hee hee !!!. They were supposed to come out the latest by 31st, Jan, 2011 but you know things happen at their own time in our country but they have to get things going sooon !!!!

Cheers

Finally received my TataSky HD-STB after a dogfight with the clueless TataSky customer support ..err...torture team.

Initial Comments
SD Picture Quality: Below Average on most channels.
HD Picture Quality: Just about OK (but nowhere near in quality when compared to HD transmissions I've experienced on the same LCD TV abroad.
Audio Quality in HD& SD programs: Dialogue muddied and lacks body...Yet to route it through AVR

Others: Had to pay for HD pack & Sports pack since it was not bundled with the Grand Pack(free for 1 month). Installer charged quite less for the extra length of LNB cable (free till 12 meter, chargeable above 12 meter)

Overall: HD quality leaves a lot to be desired and was certainly not worth the 2 months wait. Very disappointed with what is being dished out as HD.
SD picture quality varies across channels but 70% of the channels look below average on my 42" LCD. Looks like TS is using too high a compression to squeeze more channels into the transport stream

I have a 36 incher and on this i found the pic quality of both SD and HD channels to be good though not earth-shaking.
I am not very impressed with the HD Audio though!! Both Nat-Geo HD and Discovery HD kind of sound off-base. I think the problem could also be with the Optical cable that i am using to connect my TV to my Onkyo receiver. It sits very loosely on the receiver side and the audio transmission is hence disturbed.

Off Topic!!

Apologies for the Off Topic but need some help

Can someone pls share e-maild id of higher-ups in TataSky. It's almost five days since my request for installation and nothing has moved so far.

5 complaints and e-mail to help@tatasky is not helping either.

I feel helpless and cheated

I agree with digitalv's comments... I got TS+ HD installed last evening and I am frankly not happy with the SD picture quality... Infact the SD quality of my cable operator provided through DigiCable STB was much better... My HD services will get activated today and I'll have to see how good/bad it is.

On second thoughts, I am planning to return and switch over to my cable operator STB if TS has any money back option... Is anyone aware of such a thing? I want my money back!!!

I got one installed yesterday, amazing HD picture quality and about SD, well what can I say, I am surprised people validating local cable SD quality better then STB, I for one can vouch that STB SD picture quality is better in every way then any local cable wala, and the HD is ahead as well than the reliance HD I saw on display panels ........ more details on this thread ...

If you were comparing to Analog SD picture quality (without CAS-STB) from a cable company, I'd agree that TS-SD is somewhat similar or better overall, but I've also seen Analog transmissions close to CATV head-end/Fibre-Optic repeater to be far better than TS-SD in every possible way. Again with a CAS-STB (Digital) connected to the cable system, the local cable operators beat TS-SD hands down in terms of picture quality. Tata Sky's SD picture quality is best compared to a poor DVD rip. The ones you get when 2-3 movies are stuffed into a single DVD.

How true! I have both CAS as well as TS in my two flats, and CAS picture quality is spectacular.

Yes that might be true, I am comparing the usual local cable that uses the common coaxial cable to transmit data. Ofcourse CATV/fiber optic transmission will be better, but I haven't come across that kind of cable being used by the common public in Delhi, may be down south.

Saw this post, Booked the box :)
Fantastic offer, considering I paid 6k for the original Sky+ Box.

I hope they stream 5.1 over my onkyo 3300, Hate it, if I have to draw an unnecessary Optical cable just for Audio.

Does every boxy have an issue with the SQ on HD channel on Tata Sky?

i have connected using HDMI an can barely hear at 3/4 the max volume the commentary of the narrator on both Nat geo HD and Discovery HD .

Anyone has any tips on how this can be sorted out?

I had ordered my TS HD box to my address in Bangalore and carried it to Kerala.

I call Tata Sky customer care to get it installed in place of my existing TS box.

Me: Explain the situation to Customer care engineer that i want to change my existing box with HD Box.
CC: Sir, This service is not available in Kerala. No technician is available to do this installation.
Me: Ok I already have Dish and LNB installed so I just need to swap the box with my old card. Can you do the changes from your end so that new HD Box and my old card works together.
CC: Please wait for a moment..Sir I have checked and found that you need new LNB and cables to use HD box so its not possible.
Me: This was not told to me when I ordered the box from TS. I stated my requirements correctly to the sales guy and and he said there are no issues I carry the box myself and it can be swapped with existing box and use the old smart card.
CC: Sorry Sir it does not work in Kerala
Me: Ok give me some local TS guys numbers I will get in touch with them
CC: Ok Sir. He gives few local dealer numbers.

I now call the numbers TS gives.." The number you called is currently not in service". I hear this for all the numbers i call.

Now I calls up the dealer from whom I bought old tatasky connection and asks him if he can provide the tata sky installer contacts. He happily gives a contact number.

I now call the tata sky contact. He happily listens to me and say sir I will call you back.

He calls back in five minutes and confirm that I have the box with me and takes the existing Tata sky account number and new HD box and smart card number. He takes the route details to my house which is 60 KMS from his office.

The guy reaches in two hours and connects all the stuff and replace the smart card with old one. Calls up his office and ask to decouple the old smart card and box and link the card with new box. Unfortunatley there is some problem in connectivity at his office and his collegue cannot perform this work. Its already late and he has to travel back 60 kms through uninhabited route. I advise him to come back the next day.

He promptly comes on time next day and calls up his office and in 15 minutes my TV is now displaying Discovery HD!!! I am impressed.

The guy informs that..SIr this is the first TS HD installation in Kerala as far as he is aware. He handles four districts. I thank him and he leaves.

Hello Sils, could you please send me the contact number of the guy who installed it. Will be a great help...

You don't need an optical cable. I keep telling this - any spare RCA cable for coaxial cable will do if you have a spare coaxial port on the AVR. This is more reliable setup than optical.

Absolutely True. Not sure why some of us in the forum are actually swearing on the good for nothing quality. Both SD and HD are better on Dish HD with usually better audio quality including those of HD channels (though some are badly downscaled from DD5.1 to stereo resulting in distortion, incorrect channel mapping). I am in a big fix on what to do as Dish TV otherwise is a terrible DTH operator in terms of customer support.

Me too. Completely agree with you. Finally an engineer is scheduled for today evening (I am sure he can't do much). He should be able to inform TS that he could not do anything to fix the connection unless TS does from their end.

i had a friend buy me a hd box from pai bangalore and brought it here. Called cc and gave digicard/ comp numbers and told them to activate. they said the numbers are not valid( yes i double checked). Then i recharged my old TS sd a/c and called cc again asked them to add this as a second connection or link my old smart card to the new box. They said they cannot do it and they will send an engineer in 72 hours for "installation". I told them i already connected the box and and i can see channel 100, they only need to activate it but they said NO. Tried a different cc guy at a later time but got the same reply

Now waiting for the engineer
