I have intel dual core e5200 and recently bought onkyo hts 3400 for feeding home theater I have two option 1)Graphics card 2)Media Player ( Budget around Rs.5k).As far as I know I have the following assumption about these two help me to choose between them.

Graphics Card
-------------
Pros:

1)Gaming crysis, nfs new series, call of duty new series...(with my present onboard graphics I could play games like nfs most wanted,fifa08,price of persia ... )
2)No need to buy hard disk.
3)better quality video audio playback
4)Freedom of choosing different players to play audio & video
5)Secured (no other person view content without our permission)

Cons:

1)High power consumption
2)No proper remote available
3)Some what inconvenient compared to media player
4)There is no component output

Media Player
-------------
Pros:

1)Convenient to use & remote
2)Power saving
3)Component output (so we can use it with crt tv also)

Cons:

1)Video quality is not matching grphics card
2)Need to buy another hard disc
3)Content is not secure
4)No gaming

Why is the content on media player is not secure?

You could share the movies on your PC if you buy a media player with ethernet connection:) . Then you don't need to buy another hard drive.

i recommend media player.....
i own asus hd2,,,,,,good performance...
will opt xtremer if hdmi 1.4 support added...
love the remote usage which is not possible in pc( heard abt remotes but has not seen one}

The same question was faced by myself around 3-4 months ago. I had gone for graphics card. The picture quality, I have thought would be better than media player. Also, a graphics card can be used for gaming also. I think graphics card with HDMI is a better option.
