HD theatre trial without burning pocket or lamps

I started well with the fixed frame. Got 6 mm ply with Rs. 800 and Virgo laminate worth Rs.1500. Unfortunately there was a slight bend due to a humid plank and the ply could not hold it straight. In the process of replacing that part of the frame, the laminate broke due to the uneven stretching of ply. So I now had to get another ply 12mm and ofcourse new laminate and paste them on the other side. :(

oK NO wip PICTURES ..came late carpenter ,closed shop.
Progress: Lazy carpenter said , frame is ready ... hope today he does the laminate
Ply or no ply ? : after hearing scary stories , i grabbed a cool 4 mm ply for 360Rs
SO here is my Pj sorry for mobile cam pics::

Dell m110 is as small as a CD case but thick as laptop power supply, mobile cam shows little
bit blurry pics but actually the images are sharp enough .
Box included : projector m110,cd,power chord and adapter, special VGA cable[this i will use most]

Didnt got much time to explore but did some trials
Format/interface:
plays mp4/mkv profiles from pen drive etc ,msd/vga/hdmi all it has .
Vga/av is done via special cables that comment to universal i/o
there is wifi capability , via a dell dongle (extra), saves from using long hdmi

Performance :
Small and powerful , does very good job in evening light till 120"+ screen
At 50% brightness , eco mode it is good and silent . Its a projector that you can carry
anywhere ,so small and light like a lunch box.

I just tested projecting on wall, then also it did a decent job and 720p is more than
enough provided the video is ripped well . focussing is easy ,
very tiny speaker inside! expected , so we need to do audio part externally,
but dint see audio out, may be via universal i/o cable audio out will be available
Voltage : runs at 110- 230v happily

awesome kaushik. You are the leading light for DIY and achieving things in a very tight budget. Anyone can spend money, but meeting a very tight budget is a great challenge.

i will post pics soon ... i got this via a malaysian trader, one of my friend went for some electronics business so he carried.Sad part is this model stock is over ..

My advice to people , spending too much for Pj is not required, take a call with a imported projector look for

1. malaysian dealers [mine i cannot disclose..as my fren gets his whole sale stuff from him ] .. that take paypal
2. Specs WXGA/ 300Lumens [if LED], 16.9 ratio , HDMI, USB playback, noise level upto 36Db is better,Throw dist*** this is really important, should be less
3. if bulb types , bulp should be max 100USD, so that after 3years u can change for less
4. Max 320 USd us price ,so that PJ comes in 20k .
5. DO DIY for screen : 2-3K max , performs as good as commercial ones

do ebay there are lott of WXGA ssale in 300USD range ...
last time i saw a 3 LCD one ... hunt hunt !

A friend is coming over from the US. I was thinking of getting a 3D projector but now I have postponed this purchase for next year as my panasonic is doing fine for now with 720p.

@muradasa just being fan is not enough ..

Pj screen is very simple , if you have proper carpenter ... it is like tell a few things , all will be done!I dont see many people making these

There are things to do :

posters, MY led spotlights to be wired to mains , heavy cloth on the walls to make it theater like..

@anm 3d is waste of money as you dont get content much ... dont waste money going by hype. However some Pjs with WXGA + 3d go by 300USD, if u wish you can grab.

@Kaushik i did my HT with a carpenter and an electrician. Planned, bought and executed everything myself. It was great fun! i know how you feel. :)

Hi Kaushik, I'm planning on purchasing a 720p LED projector that is capable of audio output. The Dell M110 is a good buy, except for the missing audio out. Just wondering if you managed to get audio out of the Universal I/O port, as you planned earlier?

Hi Kaushik,

Thanks for your guide. Can you please recap your total expenses giving detailed split of each material you bought, size, cost and any special place you get them or whether its available in all furniture/hardware shops. Also details of labour expenses.

Since my carpentry knowledge is zero. This is what you did?

(1) bought some thick plywood and made a frame - how big is this? 10 feet diagonally?
(2) Then you had some thin plywood and you nailed/pasted it to the frame
(3) Then you bought a white colored yellow tinged matt laminate and pasted it to this thin plywood?
(4) Then you bought some rough black non reflective material and gave it a border?

Thats all right? sorry to be pedantic but I just want to buy all this in one go this weekend.

All other members - assuming this cost around the 4K mark - are there better alternatives? I can buy screen material from US - but from what I read - any DIY screen even with screen material will still be a fixed frame as foldable DIY screens are not practical? Laminates are better since they are more hardy although not portable.

I am in a hurry since the projector is expected next tuesday and hence want to finalize the screen this weekend.

I shall post some pics/video of my current wall so that it will be easier for you to give me advice.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Kaushik - I will PM for a possible visit this weekend:clapping:

you should try the egate P512 projector , it is hd compatible, has WXGA resolution and great contrast ration too beside the other splendid features and it uses LED based technology.

available on ebay too.

you dont need to ask for it from the US , you can get it right here.

prasad,
more or less it is same as all steps u gave ..
any carpenter who makes a table will make it ,
there is no rocket science . yeh border has to be non relective

The matt white laminate is slighty gray tinted..and approx 1.1k , other are just for the frame material and favicol.

Ajay , he bought the PJ already ...
although egate may look good , it will not be able to match the ACER 3d , the ACER has better optics , cooling, quality colorwheel(?? whatever )
the difference will be in black lavels, color contrast , sharpness....

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
