Help in building HTPC/Server

Also for music pc please please use very expensive smps with active power factor correction to avoid bad harmonics in power supplied.

The Corsair 400cx can be had for Rs 3200/- . It is also 80Plus greenpower certified meaning it will not waste electricity it pulls that much.

The Corsair CX 400 is pretty good, though slightly expensive than the Cooler master psus.

One can also try the CoolerMaster eXtreme Power 390 Watts which comes for around rs 1400 and is a pretty good deal depending on the load on the rails (if you don't have a pci-e graphics card and too many drives).

I am amazed how several HTPC owners ignore the importance of the PSU. There is very high possibility of screwing the HTPC if one gets a PSU without a good over voltage/overload protection and not checking how many 12V rails are present and ending up overloading and causing damage!

I maybe repeatign the post but good news for people wanting a HTPC solution but put off byt the cabinets.

I have the Silverstone cabinet price list and these are available in Mumbai (shipping charges are 600 rupees.

I will try getting the price update for Antec 2480 too.

Supratepp, can you give me the dealer's contact details. I need to buy a CPU cooler for LG775. I already have Silverstone's GD01 BR Cabinet.

Believe me, it is downright sexy. It looks better than my 90,000 Onkyo.

Cheers

GD01 (mx??)= how much and does it have a LCD. the silverstone site does not mention anything?

So you seem to have gone the HTPC route too - mez again looking forward to the HTPC thingy with the availability of such cabinets

BTW pm ed you about the dealer contacts

Got the PM. Thanks.

There are two models - GD01 and GD01 -MXR. The first one is without LCD. The second is with LCD and remote. The 'S' and the 'BR' refer to body colours.

I got the one without LCD for 238 Singapore Dollars. In any case my system will have a small external monitor, so I don't see the need for an LCD.

Cheers

Wow! Wish I had known about all these cabinets when I was building my HTPC. Nevertheless good luck to you guys.

One small thing I would add is that please do not skimp on the cost of the DVD drive. An LG/Samsung economical drive is not the way to go at all. I recently replaced my Samsung drive with a Moser Baer one and lo, it is a night and day difference. And since ripping is one of the most important things you are going to do on your HTPC, this aspect (DVD drive) must not be compromised on. Just my 2 rupees.

Wow, I didn't know Moser Baer made DVD drives?! Are they supposed to be better than an Asus or Sony?

AFAIK moser baer entered the market couple of years back with the moserbaer Lite-On brand (partnering with Lite On and Philips).

Liteon is one of the better brands out there in the market. LiteOn dvd writers are known to burn faster than Asus and on wider range of media. Look up comparison tests on the web and CD websites which give detailed reviews on EAC rips etc.

THe Asus drives are pretty good as well and I have used both for a long time.

Many times better. CD as well as DVD ripping is about 5 to 6 times faster than on my Samsung drive. That is a significant difference in performance. Reliability in terms of reading media is also improved.

In retrospect I regret not going for Moser Baer to start with. But, hey, all is well that ends well.:)

Does AcccurateRip have the offset for MB drives? EAC accurately recognises my Sony and Samsung drives. If AccurateRip has the offset details, and MB has technical collaboration with Lite-On, it will be MB for me. That is for sure.

Cheers

venkat,
since you are talking about accurateRip, I assume you are interested in audio rips. The best in the world are the Plextors. You get C2 error correction, FUA (Force Unit Access) bit support, excellent rips with EAC in secure mode, the list goes on and on.

The moserbaer's are actually Lite-on drives, and some of the lite-on drives are really good. But MB drives are not common at all, so you wouldnt get any any offsets in accuraterip database. Check Digital Audio Extraction, it has only a single MB.

Don't bother with the MB/sony/samsung, get a good plextor model (they used to have a scsi model called ultraplex something.. google it... it was one of the best supposedly).

I think currently Plextor PX-230A is really good, it goes for $60, you can also check this - Lite-On SOHR-5239S - I don't really know how good it is so you need to read some reviews...

Bhaskie:

The MOSER - BAER DH-20A4P seems be be there in the AccurateRip database. In any case, I shall roam about in Ritchie Street and see if the Plextors are available. I know they are good drives. Thanks.

Cheers

Venkat - I did not check the Accurate Rip database. But I had heard and read about Lite On devices and had a healthy regard for them. Hence the Moser Baer.

If you do find the Plextor in Chennai, do let me know. Thanks.
