Hi friends, need some help,

I've connected my sony vaio laptop (running Windows 7 Home Premium) to my Denon 2310 via HDMI and my avr to my Full HDTV via HDMI. My laptop's max display resolution is 1366 by 768 . It's got a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series graphic card. In my screen resolution settings (rt. click on desktop >> screen resolution) i've detected my HDTV as the second display, the display option show's as DENON AVAMP,
resoluton option shows as 1920 * 1080 (recommended). But the problem is my display on the HDTV is cropping out of the TV (i.e for instance my taskbar is getting hidden below) and if this happens the my laptop suggests to choose a option in the HDMI resolution settings which will fit my desktop within the HDTV but the resoluiton reduces by around 5%.

So my question is how do I get full 1920*1080 resolution from my laptop to fit my HDTV without cropping out/in. Am I missing some settings on my laptop????

Hope my explanation is simple enough, pardon me if it's too confusing.

Thanks.

My guess is that you have set the "Aspect Ratio" in TV as 16:9.
As I could not make out the TV you own, the term used in this post may not be accurate.
By "Aspect Ratio" above, I mean the setting where you can set TV aspect ratio to 16:9, 4:3, zoom, cinema zoom etc.

For your TV to display the PC signal properly, you need to change the above setting to "Just Scan"(in case of LG) instead of 16:9.
If your TV is not LG, there will be something similar with a different name.
Basically the TV does not alter the signal and maps the pixel 1:1.
If you let me know the model, I can Google for your TV manual and put the exact terms here :)

Or just try all the aspect ratio once. One of it should get it right.

Hi NetFreak,spirovious,dotMac...

thanks for your help, changing my picture option from 16:9 to fit screen was the solution.

So now, i'm getting a little greedy here..........how do I get HD audio working???
My laptop has Realtek High Definition v 6.0.1.6069 and ATI HDMI Audio v 6.0.1.6034. By default my laptop uses Realtek audio driver, and when connected to my AVR via HDMI it switches to ATI HDMI audio.

The media player software I use to play my BD's are Corel's WinDVD 10/PowerDVD 10/ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater 3.

HDMI port version in my laptop is 1.3.

thanks.

You just need to change configuration of this Audio device to use 5.1 output. You can check on that page if handshake between AVR and Laptop is okay (it should list all reported HD formats).

Then you can use VLC to test HD Audio clips from demo world. If that works, then you can follow steps specific to a particular software.

Strange may it seems but, my ACER though having the same screen resolution as yours does not give me the option to change the second display resolution to 1080p. When I connect my laptop, the display resolution shows as 1360x768 and fits the screen perfectly, will all sharpness. It shows multiple monitors in the Display Dropdown, thats it. Even I would like to change it to 1080p if possible.

However in audio department I am more then satisfied. When I connect the laptop to AVR through HDMI, I get an entry added in my sound play back devices as HT-R670 (which is my ONKYO AVR), I just need to right click on the same and I get the option to configure my spks to 7.1. Checkout the snaps below ...

The test confirms that all spks are configured to give 7.1 audio. I then use VLC to play any media file that has 5.1 audio. Change the audio option from AUDIO=>AUDIO DEVICE=>5.1 and thats it .......

Hi,

Thanks for the info, does it bitstream HD audio also. I'm able to get 5.1/7.1 DD/DTS audio, I'm trying to figure out a way to bitstream HD audio from my laptop to the AVR.

And about the 1080p resolution for your TV, there's option called HD resolution settings which pop's out automatically when you connect the laptop to the AVR via HDMI, it has 3 option 480p, 720p and 1080p, so we need to choose 1080p here.

thanks.
cheers.

I am not sure that your ATI GPU can bitstream as 5**** series does.
If it does, then select option in ATI CP as HDMI audio & powerDVD output as HDMI.

I'm also assuming the same that the ATI 4200 series dose not bitstream HD audio:sad:........even elsewhere on the net there is no mention of the same.

thanks.

@sam9s

I am assuming that you are using Win Vista. So your display settings must look something like this :
vista_dispsettings.png

Click on the box numbered "2" which is grayed on above snapshot.
Now the popup menu below should name your TV or AVR.
Make sure that "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" checkbox is checked.
Apply the settings.
Now set the display resolution to 1980 x 1080.
If you want start menu to appear in TV, you need to also check the box named
"This is my main monitor".

Hope this works out for you.

Unfortunately thats correct. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD can be passed through only on ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series and above(6xxx is yet to come out).

Can you update realtek chip in Lapy? Realtek 889 support HD-aud.
If your chip does, then as said earlier ,config it as 5.1/7.1 & set as default playback device.
Now in PDVD,select 5.1 output. Now you can connect 5.1 analoge out from Laptop to 5.1 AVR in.

Can you please tell me how to enable hd audio pass thru in ati radeon hd5850?

it is already running on latest drivers

i use onkyo 3300 which can decode hd audio when i play same BD with bdp-s370 it displays dts master audio , when played with htpc(liteon bluray drive,hd 5850, TMT3 , win 7 64 bit, hdmi) it shows only dts

in the player(TMT3) audio settings i selected output mode : hdmi and mixing mode :using original primary

in catalyst control centre (control panel for GC) i dont see any audio option

Playback devices / Sound i see ATI Hdmi output is the default audio device enabled and its properties i can see dts hd and dolby tru hd under supported formats)

No I am using windows 7, it has it own rules ......... I get the following window when I go to resolution window in 7 ....

But I finally figured how to get it done, strange may it seems but, this is how win 7 perceives. You DO NOT get the option for 1080p with your laptop screen/lid open, I was doing all sort of RnD, when I had to go to the lu .... the moment I closed my laptops lid to go, the display on my LCD flickered and I got a screen with my icons out if screen border ( much like aneelr ), I immidiately checked the resolution at it was 1920x1080 ... :) .... ...... then I flipped open my laptop lid again and vola! the screen flickers again and the res becomes 1360x786 on both the displays....... strange isnt it ...:) . Close the lid and LCD has full 1080p ....lol...... now the misplaced icons, all I had to do was to choose "JUST SCAN" on my LCD and everything was fit and perfect ........ man I learnt a new thing in this experiment .......
If any one can figure out to get full 1080p on both displays on Win 7 Notebook with the lid open I am all ears .....

In the multiple Displays list, try selecting "Extend my windows desktop" to the TV panel and set resolution individually. If this works, you might have to setup your video playback software to use the TV panel instead of the laptop as display device.

Playing same full HD content at different resolutions on different monitors would need a lot more GPU horsepower than most laptops permit

+1, you just need to change display mode.

My laptop works fine in this mode (Intel Onboard Grafix). 1080p and 5.1 audio over HDMI work fine.

You cannot get 1080p res on your notebook, cause it's naive res is not Full HD, and do exactly just as digitalv has suggested, then no need to close you laptop.

cheers.

What I meant was 1080p on LCD with lid open, I know my notebook cannot display 1080p ... :), also extending desktop just gives me an extra desktop apart from the one I have on my laptop, if I move my mouse all the way to right it crosses the border and I then can see the pointer on my LCD. There I cannt do much as its just a plain desktop with nothing else. I might try shifting the "My computer" to the other desktop and try opening up the file, but this seems to be an absurd way of playing a file.

What I meant was if there is a way to keep the lid open, and have 1080p on my LCD.

But I would agree with digitalv on ......lot of GPU power required to play HD content on both the displays with different resolution at the same time. Probably that is why by closing the lid we disable one display to have full HD on LCD ......
