Hi guys,
Now that I have decided to design my Ht by myself, i need ur help. First things first....for my dedicated room i wanna know what kind of cabling should i go for....also whether the screen(say 100") should be at the centre of the wall or it doesnt make a diff....for my living room i have a partition;both of which are quite big......my basic requirement for the living room would be watching cable and listening to music.....so is 7.1 advisable( 5+2 with a splitter) or stereo system enough.....plz keep posting.....

if its cable and music specifically..

stereo strictly...

go for a amp + bs or if larger room amp+ fs setup..

budget and room size..

bs and fs:what do they mean........
living room size:23ft by 18ft + 15ft by 23 ft (coz living room has partition)
budget:40-50k
....plz reply on what cables should i go for and what position is ideal for the speakers as in d height and other stuff.....coz some1 said that the ideal ht for speakers should be 6Ft....so ur thghts on this.....also i auditioned Genelec 8020B speakers n Genelec 7050B subwoofers along with Harmon Kardon AVR255 for my dedicated HT room...total cost was somewhere ard 3 lakhs...so plz ur suggestions on this set .....or can i get a good set for much less......

yep....50k for d living room setup.....that includes amp, dvdplayer, floorstanders, sub if required.......also suggest me a good setup as in d brands....so as to i can check their sizes and biuld my unit accordingly...

check out ushers s520 bookshelves. apparently theyre the speakers to beat in that price range. also wharfedale diamonds, kef iq and monitor audio bronze - all bookshelves. once you;ve got that figured audition an amp to match. nad, cambridge, marantz are all good

Hi guys,

Am back after a while.....did some reading on the forum and am confused even further......so plz help me out ....i plan to buy all the systems within a months time.....so kindly suggest the best possible options....here are my tweaked requirements....

So, if u see I have decided on 2 media players, 2 BDP's and a console gaming....this will create a variety for me....if u guys can think of some changes which can enhance the syatem in terms of VFm then please do...as in in case there is no need for sub in a bedroom and that money can be utilized somewhere else then y not....also HTiB for a room can be a option....so please do suggest....

also i came across this site for media players...it seems to be a good piece of info on media players available in the market....Guide Buyers Guide for Media Players Streamers comparing features | Missing Remote

Please guys help me on this so that i can upload my setups on the forums just as u guys and move a step ahead on the ladder...

Also i do have a Rs 12000 voucher for JBL/harman products...so how best can i utilize this along with my requirements...plz suggest....

you are discussing many systems for your entire house. But we need more details about the systems. I have also set up 4 different systems in my house. in addition there are 2 more rooms with only basic DVD + STB + TV.

What is most important in going about such a project is to do up the systems one at a time. All my 4 systems have been bought with a gap of 3 months in between. This way you can also get a better idea of what you like and can change things along the way. In fact in some place you can start with the source + TV only and add the AVR and speakers later. Aslo you can install soundbars in some room instead of AVR + speakers if you want to improve aesthetics of the room.

Some questions before I make any suggestions, can you answer the below

1. Rough allocation of budget room-wise?
2. Is aesthetics important in any room?
3. If anywhere you would like to go soundbar / HTiB and where?
4. Are you the user for all the areas (I think unlikely)? If not then are the actual users tech savvy and comfortable with a AVR / media player setup?
5. What have you heard and liked so far? Also mention the TV used for the setups

These answers will help all in making suggestions? I have used all varieties of products and brands as each room had its own requirement. In fact someplace I have gone for looks rather than the sound (though not compromising it ) knowingly.

Rough allocation:
HT room: 2 lac
Living room:45-50k
Bedroom1:45-50k
Bedroom2:ard 40k
Bedroom 3: ard 25 k

Aesthetics are always welcome. But i havemade provisions for 5.1 speakers everywhere....so even f i go for a soundbar the wiring would be visible.....thats not an issue but if soundbar can produce the desired effect.

soundbar or HtiB i can go for in Bedroom3
Also Bedroom2 and bedrrom 3 are not tech savvy....so i dont know how to go abt then....but i must say valid thght raised.....waitin for other experts .....

I will take a shot at it one at a time.

HT: I also had a budget of approx 2 lacs. Though this was flexible, I did not want to overshoot.
Projector: The choices were Optoma HD20, Epson 8350 and Panasonic AE4000. All 3 have got very good reviews and Panasonic is definitely the best (read simultaneously as costliest) amongst the lot. However, due to budget (Pana PJ will cost 1.15k) and large size of Epson and Pana, made me go for Optoma. I am happy with my choice and only thing to keep in mind is inflexibility to position this PJ (true for all DLP models). You need to measure the placement before you buy the HD20. Approx 60-70k

Screen: My personal opinion the bigger the better. Try to accomodate a 16:9 100" screen, but plan for a minimum of 92" model. Approx 20k
AVR: Good models to choose from Marantz 5005, Denon 1911, Marantz 1601. I prefer Denon and Marantz over Yamaha and Onkyo. Approx 30k

Speakers: There are many good 5.1 available to check out in Mumbai. I prefer the book shelf based ones as more VFM in the same price range. The ones I heard were Quads, Wharfedale, Mordaunt Short, PSB, KEF, Polk, B&W, Monitor Audio and Deftech. The ones I liked were Quads, KEF Q, Wharfedale Diamond and PSB Image. I have chosen PSB for my HT and Quads for my room. You must at least check out very good sat/sub combo like KEF T series and Quad L-ite. They are very good indeed, but I preferred the book shelves. Approx. 60-80k.

Cables: You should provide around 10k minimum for the cabling of the system.

Re: Home theater advice

Bedroom 1: I assume this is going to be occupied by you. If thats the case you should allocate more budget in this room by decreasing it in room 2 or not doing anything in room 3. Otherwise you will have a number of average sounding systems in all rooms and probably not be satisfied. Wharfedale Diamond / PSB Apha / MS Aviano would be very good systems for this room if you up the budget slightly. A 5.1 of these would cost around 50k and you can match with AVR Denon 1611 and the total system will cost 75k. Otherwise within 50k keep the same AVR and choose a 5.1 package like Energy Take, Polk RM6750, Wharfedale Moviestar 70+ etc. I would not suggest HTiB for this room.

Bedroom 2: If you plan on spending less in this room now you go for a HTiB. Also you use your HK voucher as they have good HK/JBL combo packages. Also check out Onkyo/Yamaha HTiB in this range. I really do not like HTiB having owned one of them. I would go for HK/JBL combo since you a voucher already and I preferred them over any HTiB.

Bedroom 3: I suggest you avoid an AVR based 5.1 system in this room. Also since you agree that everyone is not very tech savvy, go for a simpler setup here. Though I do recall any models and have not heard the system, check out BDP based Home theater system. Here the amplifier is built into the bluray player and a separate AVR is not need. I have heard DVD based HT of philips and they were as good (or bad) as my Yamaha HTiB. Price should be within the budget of 25k for BDP + Speakers.
Two options are from Sony and Philips (Samsung and LG must be having more)
BDV-E880 : Blu-ray Home Theatre Systems : Home Theatre System : Sony India

I think it is much better to have one set of good quality system in a central place like living room, then spreading the house with cheaper repeatable and related audio - video gear.

There will be frustration too with such a spread.

thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions.....
i guess Raghav u make a valid pt while sayin that i shd opt for a BDV HTS for Bedrrom3.....so i have decided to go for that.....a few options i have found are Pioneer HTZ BD30, Sony Ht-S370, Philips immersive HTS 3560, Samsung Ht-C6500.....what other options do i have and if not which out of these shd i go for.....i require all to be bookshelves or satellites......avr to be built in BDP...bonus would be having bluetooth, wifi and ethernet capability in BDP.....so plz suggest.......

for bedrrom 2 how will this system be...Harman kardon AVR 155 with JBL control now bookshelves and JBL ES25C centre speaker and no sub....media player to go along can be WD Live, Xtreamer Pro, Playon........wish to use my Rs 12000 voucher but at d same time dont want to compromise on quality...also what r d cons of not having a sub with d above system...another proposition can be JBL 140 speaker cet with HK AVR 133 which was there on groupbuy........what r ur suggestions guys....

I agree with Vinay. You are spreading yourself thin. If you really want a whole home AV system, you have to think in the range of some 25-30 lakhs with a AV distributions system, CAT5 wiring and all that.

2 lakhs is all right for a HT system, but if you want a projector, you have to spend more. Look at the following configuration:

1. Projector - around 100K
2. AVR - 60K
3. Speaker set - 75K
4. Media player - 25K
5. BR Player - 25K
6. Wiring and installation - 40K

We are talking about 325K here itself, leaving you no money for the other rooms. If you distribute your budget across the house, you are looking at entry level system all around.

For the bedrooms, look for a sound bar or something like the Q-TV2. Or, look for entry level HTiB systems costing around 25 to 30K.

Other option is to have a good HT room, and simple TV in all other rooms.

Cheers
