how good is malaysia for hifi equipment shopping

BTW, is a Dubai trip on the anvil? The weather nowadays seems to be perfect with temperature hovering around 20 degrees. Best time to go there.

Cheers

Missed this part. No, not really. I am keen on adding either a poweramp or an integrated amp to my system. Was looking at quality options at low costs. Dubai seemed to suggest itself as my brother-in-law is there. Lets see how it goes. Your information definitely is priceless as he mentioned that such specialty shops are few and far between there.

Hi,

My friend is traveling to bangkok. I am planning to purchase AVR through him. Can anyone suggest some good place in bangkok for purchasing AVR where we can get good price. Would appreciate an early reply. Primarily looking for Yamaha/Onkyo brand receivers.

Thanks,
Prakash

Venkat Sir,

Just out of curiosity, Singer Gayathri, You mentioned in your previous post, is she the same Gayathri from Ranjani-Gayathri Duo? and Your club?

Thanks

Hi Prakash,

I remember performing a rough-cut analysis on Thailand prices a couple of years ago.. prices seem to be in the same ballpark as India, no major advantage. Looks like an unfavourable duty structure. Of course I was looking for CDPs and the like but the principle should hold for AVRs too.

About dubai & malaysia
Dubai pricing I feel is lower than malaysia for comparable items ( I do not have expereince of Singapore pricing.

This is more true for mass market brands like Sony & Panasonic.

Also Dubai is suffering from recession and Dubai Shopping Festival was flop this year ( that is what I heard) so expect good bargains & discounts!!!

My another tip - Duty Free Liquor is cheapest in Dubai!!! ( anyway just 4 years back Jack Daniels , Chivas & Black Label was available @ Rs 1150 Appx for 1 Litre bottle!!!):yahoo::clapping:

Hemanth, I see you dancing just thinking about the prices. Wonder what will happen if you have a few pegs of Jack Daniels, eh? :):):cheers:

BTW some of these Smilies are real cute, aren't they?

Cheers

Hi! The right place to shop in Bangkok is behind Big C. ( I cannot recall the name). It used to be Bangkok's Adelphi. Also Plantip Plaza is a must visit.

Dubai is selectively cheap (when it comes to hi fi), when prices are compared to singapore. The places to look around is VV and Sons in Bur Dubai. (they also have a outlet in deira). However if youare looking for hi-end, try looking at Dubai Audio Center and Harman House in sheikh zayad road. Also Saraf DG has an hi-end outlet at its Times Square branch. Best times are to buy during DSF, anyways you may have missed the boat.

KL is not a nice place to shop for electronics. Most of the locals buy it from Singapore anyways.

Someone had, in earlier reply had talked about Funan Digital Mall. Well its good for electronics but not for Hi-Fi. In addition to the places mentioned, there are couple of stores at Roxy Theater. Look around in singapore, there are quite a bit of exotic places. Adelphi, sadly has been loosing its charm, nonetheless its the only place for highend hifi, under one mall. Recently there has been one mall close to Clarke bay... (sorry I have a bad memory for names).

If you are looking for the cheapest prices in the region for electronics. Its difficult to beat Bangkok. However, recent financial doldrums and revaluation of currency may alter the prices.

Dubai duty free is expensive for booze. The cheapest is Colombo :). Rule of thumb :- If the price of Black Lable is less than 19 USD... the chances are that place is cheap... ha ha ha

On my way to Mauritius around a year and a half back I was getting 2 black labels for USD 40 in NEW DELHI DUTY FREE AIRPORT !! Why go all the way to COLOMBO! HE HE

As A Thumbrule the prices in the Departure area will always be CONSIDERABLY less than that of Arrival Area. :)

Hi! I thought 19 USD per bottle was cheaper than 2 for 40 USD ;). BTW, that was a promotional offer. Nonetheless, Delhi Duty free is quite resonably priced... you are right on that.
The prices on a good Airport should be independent; irrespective of the departure or arrival. However there is usually a restriction on the number of units of booze that you are authorised to carry when you arrive. May be that can be a reason for people to believe ....

What the hell.... this was a forum on HiFi Equipment .... :yahoo:

my experience dealing with Tong Lee Co. was very good.

i had done a li'l home work on eMail prior to going, after google'ing.

i picked up my CEC3300R, etc., from them.

the committed price on eMail (assumedly by the proprietor, 'tlcling'), that was duly honoured, was quite a few ringgits lower than what was quoted by the sales man at the shop.

they also carry the JVC XRCDs.

generalising here, but since i believe we indians like to bargain, or get bargains. this is something i was able to satisfy myself with here.

hope this is in time and helps.

Unfortunately KL does not have a Adelphi, a Funan or a Sim Lim Square where you can get everything. On the other hand, high end is very popular in Malaysia, and the national newspaper - The Star - has a special section on high end audio/video. (The Star Online : AudioFile)

The equivalent of Sim Lim Square or Funan Centre in KL is Low Yat Plaza. Othern than that, you have to locate specific shops spread around KL for your shopping. I would suggest you decide what you want to buy and locate a retailer that you/your friends can go to. KL is a big city, and Petaling Jaya is a popular place for all shops. Some of the specialist shops are:

...i picked up my CEC3300R, etc., from them...

That's one of the CD players I had zeroed in on. Could you please tell me what's the price for it? Also, what other players did you consider before you went with the CEC?

P.S: Maybe someone should start threads on best 'watering holes' as well as places where you can pick up good 'water' at decent prices all over the country...;)

well, the CEC3300R is EOL/OOP. I got one of the last two pieces that were with TLC. as a matter of fact, when i contacted CEC Japan, they said they had run out and to try with TLC if they had any stock left!!

i compared with rega planet, rega jupiter, jolida, marantz, denon, cambridge and arcam. my mind was set on an Eastern Electronics Minimax CDP, but did not get it. The CEC3300R was the second best. it is a very nice player.

i am not mentioning Oppo above since i bought the 980H and the 981 HD for SACD and DVD respectively. the CEC is only RBCD (i believe with HDCD support).

send eMail to the TLC eMail ID suggested. they are responsive.

Thanks. I am torn between getting an Oppo 980 for my SACD/DVD-A collection and using the same with a good DAC for ACDs and getting a stand-alone CDP and the Oppo...

hey guys, how about thailand? making a trip there in May. I've been there before and had realised that prices of LCDs and plasmas are very competitive, but no idea about where to go for hi fi etc...any ideas?

Best bet is North America. And that too when they run some kind of deal during Christmas, new year, thanks giving ...
Nothing to beat their price world wide when it comes to electronics.
The expense is the cost of travel compared to the Asian/Arab countries.

I found Singapore expensive for all kinds of electronics on my recent visit compared to North America prices.
