Dear Friends

Have got a Full HD Samsung series 5 LCD but have not been able to watch any HD content till date.

I have a Sony DVP NS708HP and AVR is Onkyo TXSR606. Both have HDMI connections. The DVDs look good but dont have a blue ray player so not seen any HD.

Can someone guide me on how to get HD content ?

Thanks in advance.

Well there are 3 ways to go about the same -

1. Get a blue ray player -
2. Buy a HD playing content box like, Nmt, Elekton, Pop corn hour,
3. Use a HTPC to play hd content by playing MKV,X264

U can download most of the blue ray rps in mkv format online and playback them using option 2 or 3.

How will you play HD content? You will need a Blu-Ray player to play. You can check out HD rips though, just Google for them.

Hi Dushie

Appreciate your quick response.

How much does a HD playing content box cost?
Where can I get these in Mumbai?

Can you suggest sites where one can download blue ray rps ?

Thanks in advance.

Do you see a difference in pic quality between upscaling and non upscaling? If so, then you are seeing a virtual HD feed. I see your DVDp can do 1080P upscaling.

Dear marsilians

Thats the reason I bought this DVD player.

The same TV when in showroom ,was playing HD content(the demo content which generally every showroom plays) .How can I see that picture quality at home?

Best option would for playing HD BD content is PS3, hopeful it would play generic HD content as it could works as linux box too (but not tried)...

Apart from downloaded content, I mean have to tried viewing original DVDs? Movies like Casino Royale, Bourne Ultimatum, ... or cartoons like Incredibles, should look pretty sharp on the TV.

Don't go by the showrooms setting too much as they tend to display in vivid mode which will hurt your eyes in no time at home. You should be looking for as much of a natural colour rather than very bright colours

Hi marsilians

Original DVDs do look good on my TV.Do you mean that is full HD? I am not sure.

The HD content played in TV showrooms is much clearer and full HD.

Since Blue Ray player and disc both are expensive now so I was thinking if there is any way to watch full HD?

Perhaps not the answer you are looking for, but I recently invested in a high end HD camcorder and that's my source for true HD content.

ame,

You would need a Blu-Ray player or a PS3 or connect a PC to the TV to watch HD content on it. Present generation of DVDP don't even handle HD rips, only a PC or PS3 will play HD rips like .mkv files and ditto for HD media too.

Hi

Yes an option but I dont have film making skills :)

Would like to see content created by skilled people.:D

Hi Ame,

What you need is a Media Tank. You can read about it here

HTML:
http://www.hifivision.com/dvd-players-dvd-hard-disk-recorders/2732-hd-networked-media-tank-nmt.html

About HD content, there are many sites like bittorrent, piratebay etc that provide p2p links for HD content as well as SD content. You will need a torrent client like BitTorrent or a myutorrent (myu being the greek alphabet). After downloading these .mkv files, you can save them on an external HDD and play using HD content player.

The BluRay player market is still nascent and doesn't provide affordable BD players. I feel we will have to wait another year and half to get a decently
priced BD player.

unfortunately most mkv files wont play on our dvd players or on ps3 for that matter. so dont see any use in downloading them unless you connect your PC to your lcd.

ame,

Don't take this personally but you are in the situation where you have not thought through before you purchased your components. I don't see you getting the return on investment or value that you might have thought you would. I am suggesting this simply going by your questions in this thread.

You have put yourself at a stage where you need to invest more in order to realise the best out of your setup. But there is also a limit to that. For instnace, even if you end up purchasing BR player, there are only limited releases and each one of these disks are expensive. This is precisely the reason I was guiding you to enjoy the standard DVDs because its a mindset shift that you have to make.

HD content is hard to get in India unless you go the downloaded route that does not guarantee resolutions of 1080P that your TV salesman has sold you with. Even if you get, its complex to view as you need other equipment to do the job like a media center PC or the squeezbox, PS3 etc.

The good news, if any, out of this thread is that you are not alone in falling victim to the TV salesmen' charm. THere are many others on the forum who in the same situatoin as you.

Again apologies, this is not to put out a dreary story. I am getting you to look at the silver lining (aka SD DVDs).

Dear marsilians

You are right. No need for apologies.I kind of knew that HD in India is not ready now.

If I had known about this forum before I bought these items I would have made better choices.

Well looks like I need to wait till Blue ray picks up ,and also when HD tv content starts in India.

Till then good DVDs.

Why dont we use PC as all in one source?

See PC with good Graphiccard ,sound card can do all for you.I m doing same.
I have intel E4500 C2D,Big 7300LE(GC) & onboard sound card with 5.1 config.
I dont have HDTV yet,but using CRT to watch pc contents from S vid out of GC.It has DVI out can go upto 1080i.

So I also use PC as source. The benefit, upgradation for only 3 to 4k(if you go for advance card with HDMI out).So you can save money for Blueray(24k)

Dear spirovious

I am planning to upgrade my 4 year old PC in any case.

The method you mentioned will provide a substitute for Blue ray player .Right?

How do you get the HD content?
