Ive heard Anilva's Fostex 206 BLH driven by fairly powerful speakers and they sounded pretty good.

@GeorgeO, which amp was this? I'm curious to know as I've been hard pressed to find a solid state amp that pairs well with single drivers without too many compromises.
My experience with single drivers and solid state amps has been that they work reasonably well with class a amps and otherwise warm sounding solid state amps but not with the highly damped or clinical variety. I suspect that a Firstwatt amp would work very well but have unfortunately note been able to try one.

Only Indian / Western vocals, Instrumentals and full blown orchestra for the Krell - new speaker combo ........ no Bollywood ...
Only worry being, shan't be able to take full advantage of what Krell is famous for .... power. From what I understood of single-driver high efficiency is, the volume knob would never cross 9'O clock.

To fully utilise your krell power, get hold of hard to drive speakers (low sensitivity)
Suggest you drop the TL speakers idea & look elsewhere.
I think the idea is to look for good sound and not 'to fully utilize the power of krell'

I believe I heard the amps with a NAD amp, and also with the 25 wpc Class A Pass designed F-5-which has a huge heatsink! I will check with Anil and revert.

H = 50.5" (incls of 3" spikes)

Amplifer with high damping factor will work well with any kind of speakers because the high damping factor will prevent the back EMF generated by the speaker cone during its motion of the moving coil in its air gap and will not affect the amplifier's output stage. More over in a TL the cone motion is reduced unlike a Vented enclosure due to absence of back-pressure from the enclosure wall. Also the speaker system impedance curve is reasonably flat in a TL and hence will have positive impact on the damping factor.
Whats the original cost of 400xi BTW?

I would like to really understand how many people on this thread have actually heard this amplifier that is being discussed in optimum surroundings.
I think that this amp needs a great amount of dealer input.Suggest that you lug your amp around to dealers and hear a couple of your favorite discs before jumping into any sort of purchase.
Do not fall prey to the high wattage specs, this baby sounds best with 2 way speakers that are capable of serious bass.
