Just got a Krell 400xi .... now what?

Hey hari,

Apart from pulling avid's legs, what we tried to express was that he was taking the opposite approach for buying the system. Ie speakers after the amp. This is bound to narrow down the choice of speakers even if you audition extensively.

Needless to say that is neither perception nor advice. :) Just stressing the point that audition is absolutely necessary especially if you are purchasing the amp first and the speakers next.

Dear Blasto and fellow HFV'ians,

I find this amusing.

How many of you have heard a Krell ? Let alone seen it ?

Please note Avidyarthy has already mentioned he has already BOUGHT the krell.. now what??

So can we stick to giving "advise" on the correct speakers for him ( preferably based on personal audition and not some hearsay ) so he gets value for his purchase.

No point saying he should have bought speakers first as he has already bought the amp. He thought he had a good deal and he bought it. Nothing wrong with that.

hey - and whats "taste" ? who is to judge anothers "taste" ? we can always wish for that something suits someones ' taste" but thats too general.

I am sure HFV guys can provide better guidance or dont post at all.

Better still will be to discuss technical and design aspects asto why folks think this will match and that wont. That way guys like me can gain some knowledge too.

Sorry for taking this offtopic avid.

regards,
mpw

First you cannot dictate anybody to stay away from thread, atleast somebody is telling their views openly without hiding in bush or this thread will stay low.:p

General principles in human life:

Food need "taste" to differentiate the types. If you don't need the taste eat any junk why you go for variety.:p

For sure selecting in better half itself everybody have "taste".:p

While you choose cars you have some "taste" about design/look:p

While designing you interior for house you have different "taste".

So in music too types and differences are there, if you are human and have proper ears, you can differentiate or everything will hear as same junk and for sure "taste" is needed to enjoy the music. So AVD is searching for the "taste"

How about you ???:p:p:p:p:p:p

So you are another guy who have not heard Krell has participated in this thread..... At-least I have heard Krell and wished it should go well:)

What mpw is saying only members who have heard the Krell should commment and not otherwise. No point in giving perspective information as perceptions dont work in the real world.

So you decided on Hari's speakers? I'm sure they'd shine/rock/sing/(add your favourite adjectives here).

I will be giving my 18 years of speaker design experience in Avids project. If it fails i will take Sanyas from the speaker world.

I have heard Krell very well and hope i can comment..but never commented possitive or negative only wished it should suit, since i struggled to get the exact match for my speakers/amp;)

Mpw is an thread waster and he was banned and re-instated due to his unnecessary words and behavior earlier and just came inside to boil the issue. You please go ahead and no need of replying to everything.

Hey, cool it .... Srini. Don't wish to see an initiation of a free-for-all battle out in here !

Some issues regarding 'right' tweeter selection is coming over in here. Peerless Al dome is stated to be a bit bright for general amps, and expected to be 'very' with Krell. Wanted to use Wavecor 4 ohm, 30 mm textile ferrofluid one .... that too got trashed since Eastern Electronics did not 'seem' to have stocks. So, trying to locate a pair of compatible tweeters with low Resonant Frequency ... say, around 450 Hz.

Any assistance from the DIYers ... supplier suggestions etc etc ? Hari and I would be grateful ......

Dear Hari,
I truly admire your confidence.

I consider "Fail" as a relative word. In any case, pls don't think about Sanyas! The DIY gurus are very few among the already limited number of audioholics... we can't afford to loose you ;)

Regds,

Regds,

Thanks for your faith in me. I am sure and hope that i will be live up to that.

Kind Regards,
Hari.

Bought a (used) Krell kav-400xi today. 4 year old, but operated for just 6 months after purchase (so, virtually new) from a North Delhi gentleman. This guy did not prefer the clinical, forward sounding characteristics of this amp, and had gone in for a massive Macintosh tube amp (using at least 6 nos. 2A3s) weighing close to 50 kgs! His preference is for 'coloured' sound which definitely sounded more musical, with more depth than the Krell.

This was evident from his current speakers .... JBL LX22, big bookshelves. Incidently, he is eyeing used Tannoy Gold, 12" concentric speakers from a seller in Mumbai.

The Krell, what I found is definitely forward sounding, with a lot of tight bass, and could go to greviously high loudness without getting any distortions. Yes, it is clinical and flat. Just picks up the source signals as it is and amplifies it to thunderous levels, without adding any flavours, except a lot of tight bass.

So, your expert assistance required to home in on to the right speakers for this relatively thin, yet huge, widthwise and depthwise 'aluminium battletank'. The fit and finish is par excellent .... with specs of 200W @ 8 ohms and 400W @ 4 ohms, don't think it would break a sweat for 'any' speakers available.

I shan't be able to go for any immediate purchases on 'new' speakers, since am broke . Maybe, have to wait for atleast 3-4 months, if new. So, can look at the 'used' route. But again, I am not in a hurry. Patience is the 'word'.

Try the dyns.. krell dyn is a good combo.. :D
