Hi,

I am looking for surround speakers.

My existing Setup :
Amplifier : Marantz SR-6011
Floorstands : KEF IQ5
Center : IQ2c

Room Dimensions (LxWxH) = 23x10x9)

The speakers are on the shorter wall. I am sitting at a distance of 12 feet & back wall is 10 feet away. . My surround speakers can only be placed at 85-90 degrees as there is open space after that. For your reference I have attached a layout of the living room.

My confusion is:

1. What kind of speaker would be great for me. Bipole / Dipole / bookshelf?
2. Which Brand?
3. Where should they be placed?

Waiting for your response.

hi djalan

See the image available from Google images....i suggest a wall mounted bookshelf would do some justice...

Di / Bi Pole ones may also help to some extent but you need to factor the available placement space etc...

Look at Tagas, Bostons, Wharfedale, Polks (rtia) these would easily blend with the Marantz....Bose 201s and 301s are also good..

Audition and decide....simple logic is to check which speaker delivers the maximum frequencies between 20hz - 20khz....should be at least 60 - 100 watts rms...

If you are not using surround back channels, then it's better to go for Bipole surround speakers. They will provide you wider/broader sound field. It will be more immersive,. Envelop?ing and engaging than bookshelf. I am using Monitor Audio Bronze BXFX speakers and very happy with the performance. Bookshelf will give you more powerful and impactful sound more suitable for multi channel music. Bipole can be directly place on wall whereas bookshelf need special placement arrangement and if rear ported then require space behind.

I have some placement restrictions. I am more comfortable sitting at 13 feet as my projector is projecting 110 inch image on the front wall. So when I am sitting at 13 feet distance, the surround speaker would be a bit ahead. What would you suggest in that case?

Some of the speakers in mind are:
1. Klipsch R14S
2. Emotiva E1
3. Boston Acoustic a25
4. Polk OWM5 Surround

I would go with bipolar speakers for better dispersion if your seating position is going to vary in the longitudinal direction to the screen.

If you place bookshelves on the side walls perpendicular to your seating position, then when you move back, they would be firing ahead of you. The entire sound field would be ahead of you.

An alternate suggestion would be go to for 2 small satellite speakers that can be mounted on a stylish stand and placed behind your listening position as rear surrounds. With these in place and the side bipolar speakers, you will still have a considerable sound envelope to immerse yourself in.

One alternate possibility will be to go for satellite speakers with a tiltable base like the qacoustics q7000 lri. You can mount two of these on the ceiling behind you and angle them downwards towards the listening position to do duties as rear surrounds. This would also work well.

NHT Superzeros, the audiophile legendary speakers for decades. Has been choice for music lovers, very compact, acoustic suspension, sealed design, perfect for wall mounting as there is no bass port. Specially crafted for pure mids n highs which is basic need for surrounds.
