You can consider WD TV Live Media player... Top class Media player...

You can also consider ASUS O! Play Mini in india itself for around 5K..

Play On Essential ticks all the boxes. Future formats? Well maybe firmware upgrades will take care of those?

I'll also suggest blu-ray player . I was in similar dilemma and almost ordered WD TV live but then saw Panasonic BDT220 on Amazon coming for 99$. It has got good reviews and it supports DLNA (mkv & mp4), and has plenty of streaming options apart from having Blu-ray capabilities. But yes you will need a step down converter for it in India.
Better to take demo of blu-ray player before deciding on a standalone media player.

BluRay players don't have a very comfortable menu for playing various files from a local storage.

Among media players, I like the Seagate Home Theater Plus.

Agree with Shivam....BDPs do not have the flexibility in playing the various formats available in the market/on internet.

Media Players offers the diaspora to play different formats with flexibility to play subtitles as well. Some of them even does better job at upscaling the picture to 1080p.

So if the source is downloaded rips, then one should go for Media players.

WD live media player is the best for your price range and it also plays almost all files thrown at it. I have been using it for more than a year without any problem. Another good thing about WD player is even after more than a year you can expect regular firmware updates.

I use the Seagate Theater plus and am very happy with it. The Kids destroyed the remote a few days back. Any idea where i can get a spare remote for it.

Buy a basic harmony URC and program it through internet. Original remote is not required to program.
