Hi folks,

A big hello from a new member! I just got an Onkyo NR709 from the US. It is a 120v unit, so I got a 1KW step down transformer, but my unit wouldn't start up. It powers up for barely a second, and then shuts down. I returned the transformer I got and tried with two other brands - one Mumbai make Kundan and one by MX. But the result was the same - powers up for less than a second, and switches off. I tried for Maxine, but it was not available.

The power rating on the NR709 is 6.3A at 120V. So according to my math, it works out to 756VA (Watts). I even tried a 1.5KW transformer. The result was the same.

Could this be a problem with the power supply unit of the receiver? Has any one faced a situation like this? What am I missing? Any pointers will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Prasanna

If three successive convertors are giving the same result then I would highly doubt if there is a issue with all of them. One thing you could try is to disconnect all speakers from the AMP and take out all input and output cables. Power the lone amp with the convertor and see if it starts up.

Thankfully you got a Onkyo, the Onkyo official support takes care of even 110v devices at a extra cost.

I guess what you bought are transformerless voltage converters (You can figure it out by their weight. They are electronic and hence very light weight). They won't work.

The one that I bought or tried were all isolated step-down convertors. Each weighing at least 4-5k kgs.

As I mentioned, I tried both 1 KW and 1.5 KW. I will get the receiver checked at Onkyo to rule out any issues with the power supply.

Has any one else faced such an issue? One of my friends faced a similar situation with his PS3, but that was resolved by changing the step-down convertor. In my case, that did not work.

remove everything and try again. It maybe going to protection mode due to some wires shorting. multistranded wires sometimes touch the cabinet. Remove everything and try to power on.

I have had good experiences with Raksha brand step-down transformers. I picked up a 2KW one to use with an ancient Onkyo THX-919 receiver (100x5) and have absolutely no problems. I believe they use toroidal transformers, though I don't know if that makes any difference.

I am using 1.5 Mazine step-down, for my onkyo 608(bought from us) and its doing very well for over 10 months now.

In your case, you need to check :
1. Transformer is tested on other devices (to confirm that it is working)
2. If there is any voltage selection option (like I had in my polk sub).
3. If there is no power at all, you can very well check with the Service station.

Good luck.

vinayaga has already pointed out first checks - try without any speaker, subwoofer, cd player etc connected to it. If it works, add one set of connections at a time to figure out earthing or short connection problems.

I too use a US made pioneer receiver. The problem I faced initially was it's power plug didn't fit in step-down transformer's socket in a stable manner. The connection was always in a jittery state. This used to cause the receiver to start once and then stay in a switched off state. Using an adapter in-between solved this problem. I still see the same behavior almost every time I make changes in my connections - this causes this loose connection to enter the jittery state again.

Oh yes, the symptom does look like a bad electrical connection, just gets a little power and then disconnects. Get a US to US type multi-pin adaptor for Rs 50 and make sure the connection is secure.

Thanks for your responses folks.

I tried powering the amp up without any inputs or speakers connected.
I tried 1 KW and 1.5 KW transformers. The plugs fit snugly, so I did not notice any loose contact in that aspect.

So, based on the inputs, I am going to try two things:

1. Try a 2 KW transformer
2. Get the receiver checked by Onkyo.

I'll be able to do this over the weekend. Will post an update on how it goes.

prasannas , Any update on this issue ? I am also planning for getting the same from US. So any suggestions ? dos and do not dos?

Some equipment powers down or goes into fault mode if earth wire is not connected properly.

Make sure your transformers and Onkyo plugs are all 3-pin, and your wall socket that goes to the transformer is earthed properly. A local electrician should be able to check it. Even a loose contact in the earth wiring in any of these plugs/sockets may cause this problem.

Just a guess as I have seen this shock-protection behaviour in some other non-AV equipment.

I know it sounds silly but have you checked that you've set the transformer voltage selection correctly, if it has one? 110 > 220 or 220 > 110? Convertors are often step-up and step-down so obviously you need to select which way it needs to work!
