Open Baffle speaker with Tone Tubby / Fostex

Pictures are not uploading. Shows I have a over 400K of attachements so far in HFV. Do not know how to delete.

Hi Anil,

The baffles are looking good.:clapping:

Looking forward to see and listen to the finished product soon.

Regards
Rajiv

Anil. The baffles are looking very neat indeed! Are you going to be doing anything more with the base? The base, in its current shape, does not look to be wide/long enough for it to be stable - esp once you place the drivers on it. It will run the danger of tipping over.

Thanks for your comments. The base seems to be pretty good and big enough. May not be showing up correctly in the picture. The baffle is slanted back 15 degrees and to my mind there is no chance of tilting foward. I applied my full body weight on the baffle and it was rock solid.

Also the base is going to have the crossover mounted and will add some weight with those inductors.

Cheers.

Anilva, Great finish levels, the baffle looks damn neat. Are you gonna mount it emerald physics style where the driver partly sticks out at the top?

Thanks. No, I am not mouting the woofer on the top like emerald Physics. They quite distinct in their design, even though they are open baffle. My design is a plain simple woofer on the bottom and the fullrange on the top mounted off-centre with a mirror made for left and right channels.

Once the entire mounting of the speakers and the crossovers are tested, I am planning to dismantle the speakers and then get them painted with a glossy DUCO finish. Search is on for the right colour. My wife is going to pick it for me ;-)

Cheers.

Wow those look tasty!
I have a few question.
Are you using any vertical bracing apart from the sides ? as in do you plan to have anything running down the middle of the back? Also are you using any damping behind the baffle ? What is the thickness of the baffle you are using?

Regards.

In my humble opinion, open baffle designs properly implemented create one of the most engaging soundfields possible and, especially if combined with a vertical line source arrangement, the most room friendly design available. Alnico magnets are the ne plus ultra of transducer magnets, even for phono cartridges.
I have a very expensive version of such a design and I think it is truly outstanding. All the best with your project.

Do you have Granadas by any chance?

No further vertical bracing. My carpenter asked me to stand on the base and he pulled the baffle towards him. I was lifted like it was a fork-lift. Rested my case after that. He did that using a very novel mesh joint with tapers for the fingers to ensure that the joint stays in place no matter what.

The actual MDF thickness used is 1.25".

The speaker cutouts have been made and carpentery work is done. The speakers have been packed off to a specialist painter for duco paint work.

Will post pictures after the paint job.

Cheers.

Hi Anil

Inquiring minds want to know when the speakers( either the OBs or the Horns) will be ready for an audition?

George

I know I am guilty of not inviting anyone for a audition yet (for the earlier Fostex BLHs as well).

I will definitely invite fellow interested members for a audition as soon as the OBs are ready.

Cheers.

I am expecting the OBs including the paint job, crossover assembly and initial checks to be done in 2 weeks time.

Cheers.

The baffles look nicely made and IMO the slant is also giving a less imposing posture for those wide baffles.

Good to see that you have opted for MJK approach and using the same baffle dimensions. If you have a 5.1 channel sound card you can use foobar2000 and foo_dsp_xover to verify/fine tune the crossover points before you start winding your coils.

After reading the reviews in the net, I am now very interested in listening to the hemp cones...

Folks,

Wanted to update you on the project. Things are all done and ready to roll and then I figured out that one of the tone tubbys is damaged in transit, with voice coil touching the magnet during small excursions. One could nasty coil rub while playing music.

Escalated the matter to the TT guys and thanks to them, they have shipped another tone tubby as a part of their customer service, without questions. I had paid for freight again though.

Now I know the driver has landed at Bangalore airport some 20 days back and after that the whereabouts could not be traced by our postal authorities. Today we found it. Hopefully I will get it from Customs and install and give you guys an update.

Bought a Behringer DCX2496 from Amazon to do the Digital Crossover part for this project. It is an amazing toy to play around with. Cannot have that flexibility with a passive crossover.

Will post the completed project pictures and listening impressions and possibly audition to members shortly.

Cheers.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
