My Oppo BDP-83 suddenly refused to load any disc. I contacted Oppo support which kindly informed they were out of spare parts. I opened the cabinet and found out the cd tray was moving out and in but never the last step where it is lifted up by the guides. I put some new silicon grease and PTFE on various moving parts but it didn't solve the problem. Maybe the rubber drive belt was slipping? I ordered two bags of 20 belts each from Temu. The shortest belt in the bag was suitable. I chose a thicker 1.5 mm diameter instead of the original 1 mm. PROBLEM SOLVED! I don't yet have to trash my old good player! Cost of spare parts $8 and I have 39 belts for other purposes.

It’s pretty common for aging Oppo players to develop loading issues because the drive belt loses tension over time. When the tray moves but the mechanism doesn’t complete the final lift, the belt is usually the culprit. Replacing it with a slightly thicker, fresh belt often restores the full loading action. A quick clean and light lubrication of the moving parts can also help. Glad to see your BDP-83 is working again — these players are too good to throw away

Oppo BDP-83 Not Loading Disc Fixed

My Oppo BDP-83 stopped loading discs and showed the same “loading” screen again and again. After trying a few steps, I finally fixed the issue. Here is what worked for me and it may help others facing the same problem.

1. Clean the laser lens
A gentle lens clean can solve most loading issues. Dust builds up with time and prevents the player from reading the disc correctly. A soft cleaning disc or manual cleaning with care can restore proper reading.

2. Reset the player
A full reset clears small software errors. Turn the player off, unplug the power cord for a few minutes, then plug it back in and start it again. The player becomes more responsive after the reset.

3. Check the tray movement
If the tray opens slowly or stops halfway, add a small amount of lubrication to the gears or rails. Make sure the disc sits flat and the tray closes smoothly.

4. Test with multiple discs
Try a DVD, Blu-ray and a clean disc that you know works. If the player loads at least one of them, the issue is often disc-specific, not hardware-related.

5. Update firmware if available
A firmware update can improve disc recognition. Even older models may have a final update that improves stability.

After doing these steps, the player started loading discs instantly again. The main fix was cleaning the lens and resetting the unit.

If your BDP-83 is still not loading after these steps, the laser assembly might be weak and may need replacement, but most people solve the issue with a clean and reset.
