Playback designs

I would like to hear from individual owners rather than professional reviewers. Of-course since I am going to spend 3-4 lacs I will listen and take a call, but before I start travelling to places I would like to read what owners feel. BTW I thought forums such as this are for these type of discussions. It seems to be happening in other forums so why not here.

Having read quite a few reviews in AV magazines, I've realised that professional reviewers will never call spade a spade. They just can't afford to make politically incorrect statements.

Sample this:

What they say.....What they mean
Atheletic..............Pencil thin; may be flat chested
Easy going............Lazy
Modern outlook......Don't expect her to handle the cooking
Broad minded.........Loose morals

Actually there are many more, these are what I remembered off hand.

Ok ok, now don't pick up the stones. You know what I'm talking about is not about hifi but I hope you get the drift.:D

the PD dac of the 3 is the same of the player so is the case with the 5 the dac has just the extra transport integrated to it you will not go wrong with either of them but let me caution you it will take at least 500 hour of playback before you can get the full potential of the player and this i say with experience.

Thanks Jasi, appreciate your feedback. I am trying to understand the performance of the DAC portion of the player wrt 16/44 files? Have you used your player as a DAC for the above? If so did you find any appreciable difference between the CD playback vs digital files. Some users on other forums have expressed that they favored the PBD 3 for DSD files but wrt 16/44 they felt other DAC's were better. If you listened to other players what is your opinion?
Cheers,
Sid

Call for the DAC to your house - connect it to your set up & do an A / B & then decide....

I agree bhagwan - this is the ideal way to proceed, but so far I have not come across any outstation dealer willing to provide a sample for in home audition. For lower value items I have had no issues though. Perhaps they are concerned about shipping damage or other issues.
Cheers,
Sid

Rs. 350/- K is the Price - Fixed.
If you agree on the price - we can arrange for the player to come to you.
If you do not like - Rs. 10/- K will be the 'cost' [to you] - This will cover Freight 2 ways.
Consider & let me know by mail - I can arrange for a in house demo for you - so long as you are serious about purchase...
Do not PM me - mail is preferred - so images & other things can be sent & it remains on record. Also the seller can be kept in the loop.

Thanks Bhagwan, will get in touch with you once the Ayon is sold.

Don't you want to compare PD Dac,any other DAC or CD player you are planing to buy with Ayon? what if after you audition all these new sources and you still like the sound of Ayon better?

I would suggest to keep your existing Ayon CD player while you audition all these new sources,once you decide that you really like the new source's sound much better than Ayon in your setup then you should probably let it go.

Just my personal friendly suggestion.:)

Thanks Longshanks - my upgrade targets:
1. PBD 5
2. PBD 3
3. Ayon Skylla II

So ayon is not eliminated. If I decide I prefer ayon I will stick with it except in the form of skylla. In fact that is the easiest upgrade as I already know the ayon sound and like it a lot.
I am also considering Berkley audio designs alpha, but have to audition in US, this summer and there will be no home audition for this.

Sid

Jasi,
Thanx for the pointer.. this has really piqued my curiosity... i read the sixmoons review and I really think I should JUST FREAKING order it!

Sarcasm or encouragement? Bit dense here... PM me if you think that your response is gonna be controversial! ;-)

Did not understand your reply;

The DAC you like is purchased by a person & he is using it.

If you like it & have not heard it - it is easier to go to Ahmedabad & listen to it - instead of ordering it blind. A demo / audition is possible in India - so I suggested it...

I personally have no opinion on the DAC.

OT = I always like to reserve my comments on products - simply because unless I have not heard it in my own room with my gear, I do not want to say how good or how bad it is !!

That is why I like the PD - I heard it in my house with my gear & against the EMM & the dCS & it did very well !!
85 % of the performance of the Scarlatti @ 20 % the Cost !!
To me that is a winner - hands down;;;
The Best VFM DAC in the World the MPD-5 is !!
:clapping:

Have any of the PBD owners got the UB-X box to play the higher resolution files? Does normal Redbook sounds better using that then the usb input on the player?
Regards
HMV

Okies... that clarifies it... BTW, i hold your opinion on DAC's very high... as you are probably the only person here who's heard the most and also a person who's ears I trust next to my own!

I found it :-

This was with Jorma Design Cables & Allnic Pre etc.
There was also a BT Dac present that day;

Wow the DCS stack looks delicious ! :)
You and I may be the only one's using Jorma Design cables in India that I know...I am using the interconnects (previously the No.1) and the new S/PDIF (which is really superb). I also had the No.2 speaker cables which are also superb and in the world of high-end cables really great value for money.

Hello !
I use Bertram / Echole / Silencable etc.
Jorma Design I like, but did not use.
This was the full Prime set. A dear friend used to use it - now he has moved to Siltech Double Crown & Zensati [top line] !
So you may be the only one that has Jorma Koshki's Cables in India !!
Enjoy;;;

p.s. The dCS was nice - I sold it to another FM here in Mumbai - so I do not have it anymore...

To get back to the PD [DAC] - imho - that is a very very tall order [to outperform] to find a replacement for the Dac 5 !! Playback Design i.e.
Can be beaten - but not at less than 5X the price - so replacement may not be 'viable' [financially] !! :cool:

We were using on that day;
Transparent PLMM - Power Cords
Jorma Design Prime - Power Cords
Less Loss - Power Cords [not recommended]
Bertram Ultima - Power Cord
Echole Obsession - Power Cords
Silencable - Symphony Power Cords

These were used to power the different components - dac's [specially]
It was a nice day spent - lots of audio & constructive demo's were done;;
