Hi All,

Could anyone guide me on the formalities and implications - in terms of customs duty, etc, if i want to get a pair of bookshelf speakers imported from the manufacturers directly.

I was interested in Xavian speakers and called their Czech number... guess what?? i spoke with Roberto Barletta himself!!! :)
they are willing to take an order and ship it across. but what will it cost me to get it thru customs? how does this happen? I have never had any experience on this before so any advice would be really appreciated.

btw the price difference is quite a bit - about 16K between getting them from Cz and buying them here in india.

Buddy

Normally, the main charges that comes across for you will be the freight and the Customs Duty.

For one pair of bookshelves, that will weight around 15-20KGS, approx., you will have to get the same or they will send you the same by either DHL or FedEx, and these guyz will charge minimum Rs.5-6K...

Then be prepared of 35% Customs duty and the clearing charges, that including customs will be 38-40%...

So, if your speakers are above a Lakh, then it makes sense to import it, else you wont be able to save anything and end up paying more...

Finally, please be aware that you wont get any warranty locally by your dealer, so in case if anything goes wrong (normally nothing happens to speakers, but in case), then be prepared to shell out heck lot...

Take your own decision...

I agree with Mridul ...... when you say the difference is Rs 16,000 have you factored the cost of customs duty at the rate of a minimum 40% (including clearing charges)?

The duty charged was around 25-26% for me when I bought Emotivas. The custom people will calculate the duty on the (declared price+freight). You will have to pay the duty to the delivery person form courier. Be aware that cargo handling is matter of luck. Many forum members have bad experience. You must ask the shipper for double packing.

16k difference is very small for you to take on the risk of damage, customs clearance, etc On another note, its not regular practice for a company to ship to a region/country where there is already a distributor. That dilutes the position of the distributor...

cheers

thank you all. I also checked with a few contacts and got similar views. so i'll just stick with the india dealer then.

As for the dealer - Alliance 4 based out of goregaon in mumbai deals in Xavian speakers. You could get the numbers on the Xavian site.

- cheers
