Records Vs cd's

Since I'm not getting any good used turntables ,looks like I'm going to have to invest in a brand new TT.

How would the Rega RP1 be? The reviews look quite promising. And as I write this, I get a call from someone in Blr who has a Philips 242 in great condition for about 10k.

Now I'm really confused....sheesh :-(

Since morning I've been listening to a few lps that I inherited from my grandfather. I found about 200 odd records in a big wooden chest. Most of them Hindi movies like Shaan, Sholay ,Mukadar ka sikandar, Qurbani,Julie and Bobby.

There are some lovely Carpenters, nat King Cole, Sinatra etc too.

Quick question,lots of pops and crackles,I will clean them tonight. Just want to know,will a dirty/ scratched record damage the cartridge and will the pops and crackles damage my speakers?

Out of about 200 lps, about 20 or 30 are a lil bad,as in dirty and scratched. Rest all are in super mint condition considering the age!

Please clean each and every record before you play. It would improve the SQ to a great extent. The best is Mr. Jacob Kuruvila's method (available on Youtube) but if you can't achieve it, there is a very simple solution - Take about 20 drops of Vim liquid soap in a small cup, mix it well with 20 drops of RO water and keep aside. Take a record, wash it with RO water well and now put about 5-6 drops of diluted Vim liquid, put on the record and gently rub it well on the whole surface of the record. Do the same on side 2 also. You can see enough lather mixed with dirt. Now wash the record very well on both sides with RO water. Make sure that there is no trace at all of the soap on the records. Make sure to use your hands softly only, not vigorously. Now wipe the record with an old but clean vest rinsed in RO water and then water squeezed fully. Dry the records fully under the fan, it should take about 5 minutes to dry in Mumbai weather now a days. Now, place the record in a new inner cover before you put them in the outer sleeve. Hope you can manage this.

Forgot to mention that the cleaning is not to be done every time before you play a record. Once you clean it well, you are done for quite some time. Clean them again only when they become dirty again.

Seen some videos on YouTube,lots of guys use isopropyl alcohol. Is that safe ?

For LP sleeve you may contact Vijayan from Tuticorin. I am using diluted IPA solution in the ratio of 30% Isopropyl, 70% distilled water to clean my vinyls and not finding any issues.

There are 2 items to be mixed in most of the solutions - Isopropyl Alcohol and some wetting agent. Mr. Kuruvila recommended 99% Isopropyl Alcohol but I am not able to get it here. I got wetting agent through a friend of mine in USA but it is lying in my drawer without the alcohol. This solution is absolutely safe but it has to be used on vinyl only, never on a shellac disc.

As regards the vinyl sleeves, there is thread on the forum earlier. He is Mr. Vijayan at Tuticorin (Ph. 94432 02181). I have purchased from him both inner and outer sleeves and they are good. But if you have the outer cover, don't buy it. You should buy outer cover only if some of your records are without cover. Mr. Vijayan's outer covers are Khaki blank. Trust this assists.

In Mumbai, 70% Isopropyl Alcohol is available (On Ebay India). Can you kindly tell the ratio of distilled water and this category of alcohol please?

That is why bro you have to get a proper proper CD player! A CD player that has warmth unlike the entry levels which are bright and Marantz 6003 is severely bright to my ears. Listen to SACDs from a proper dedicated CD/SACD player without the ones which come with USB in and out and you will know what Im meaning.

And I cant stand Vinyls even for 10 minutes , i miss the dynamic range in an instant. For eg When I play The Who , Baba O Rilley from Whos Next SACD it will make you get up and groove with that immense dynamics the song has without a hint of any unwanted edginess that entry level CD/UD players bring along, on the other hand the Vinyl will just smoothen thicken and round it over killing that energy....not great..... .....Hear the Eric Claptons Slowhand SACD it has all the warmth of a vinyl plus that dynamic range edge,now thats awesome. You will never realize an SACD without a proper CD/SACD player.

But you need to listen to either a top of the line CDP, or a good DAC like Yggdrasil (at the very least). Top of the line DACs like Aqua Hifi La Scala, Berkeley Audio Design Reference, etc. will take things to another league.

You will have the band/singer performing in your room.

A good vinyl system easily beats it. Be it in dynamics, speed, transparency, tonality

But if had only USD 2000 to spend on my source, I would choose a Yggdrasil over a similarly priced vinyl set up

The Esoteric I had beats the Yggdrasil comfortably. But my Esoteric was a USD 17000 rig. So not a fair comparison. My vinyl rig beats the Esoteric

Yggdrasil........ this is scarily good. An old transport from Esoteric (DV50) or Denon (DCD1500/2000) or Lexicon (RT10/20) and Schiit awesome value.
