Life Just Gets Harder....

It ain't hifi but...

Actually just buying some herb/suppliment stuff from iherb.com, USA (plug: the service is good, and DHL gets the stuff here very quickly. Only thing is to make sure to check local prices and availability before buying, but you probably know that already. Also, you might think all this stuff is crap anyway: a lot of it is )

Here's from the Shopping-Cart Checkout page.

God knows what happens if I want to order a Schiit DAC!

I have not completed the process tonight, as the PAN card is under the sleeping wife. Let sleeping wives lie!

Hi,

I was wondering if you have to upload the KYC documents even if you choose the UPS option. I am trying to buy some supplements from iHerb and was wondering if you had a good experience.

Well, it turned into quite a saga --- and one that I had to leave my poor wife to finalise, as I was off on my holiday in UK.

There was all sorts of weird status stuff from DHL, about needing import clearance, other documents, etc, etc. None of it made much sense, and nobody we could get hold of at DHL could make it make sense. The shipment seemed to be caught in a huge clearance backlog at Bangalore --- and then ended up coming to Chennai for clearance. Somehow, my wife managed to get hold of the guy in the Chennai-Airport DHL office who was actually dealing with this stuff, our parcel included.

In the end, it just arrived, with duty charged as expected (IIRC, it is about 50% on suplpements). My hunch is that, yes, we had to do the KYC uploads, but after that, all that was needed was patience, rather than checking the DHL status all the time and worrying about it.

Previous orders from iherb arrived, at the door, with a customs bill, in a very few days. This one took two or three weeks. All I can say is that it wasn't iherb's fault!

That sounds pretty much like what happened to me the last time I ordered through DHL.
Have you ever tried using UPS from iHerb? I order regularly from evitamins and they send their orders through USPS and Indian Postal service has done a great job so far.

So are you saying you had to pay extra when you got your delivery?

Yes, considerable extra. IIRC correctly (I'm not very good at numbers, and I wasn't here when it was delivered anyway) it was something like 4k duty on an 8k order.

I've ordered from them before, and always paid duty, but the delivery has been quick, Astonishingly quick sometimes, as in like local delivery, rather than half-way-round-the-world delivery!

I'm all stocked up for a while. Maybe I'll try the UPS option next time.

I don't think individuals like us are eligible to deduct tax at source and deposit it. Has anyone heard an individual deducting tax at source and depositing it? I gued we are responsible for depositing tax related to our own income only.
Even if we are required to deposit 20% tax it shall not mean 20% extra payment as we are deducting tax from sellers income so we will make 20% less payment to the seller.
Another question is whether the sellers income is chargeable to tax in India. The seller is not a resident individual nor the company is registered in india. When an income does not arise or is not earned in India, it cannot be taxed in India.
Lot of confusion.... Will try to study and get some clarification

4k on an 8k order? Ouch! That's a bit too much. I guess I'll stick with evitamins then. They have no tracking for their deliveries, but I didn't need to pay anything extra. But it takes almost 12-15 days for the products to reach me, which I guess is fine when compared to shelling out 4k.

And thanks so much for the help. :)

Nope...that's not me. I also buy stuff online a lot so I did some R&D. The CAs in the accounts department in my office gave me the same response as Quora, so it must be true.
