Are you sure, I thought HDD's speed is limited by USB2.0 architecture. Will test it out today. I have earlier removed the HDD, its just a snap in connector to USB dock.

something that i found while searching for a chart or some comparison sheet

hdtach-t410-int_eSATA_USB_t400-int.gif

if you are directly connecting the HDD and considering its got mostly a 7200 rpms speed check this Chart .. strike off the 20% ..its more like ~60% more.. povided the HDD you connect is of 7200 with more cache ...may be this should answer your doubts... :)

am more concerned about the rpms of the external disk used in question.... most of em 2.0 ones initially were smartly packed 5600 rpm ones..

I disagree on the speeds rud3, check my NAS thread (in my signature) for the speed comparison over different ports. USB 2.0 is limited to 25 to 30 MB/s with a USB2 and 3 drive. A 2.0 USB drive will go upto 40 MB/s over a USB 3.0 port. A 3.0 USB drive over a 3.0 USB port can go (I have got this) upto 101 MB/s (this can go higher for some of the newer drives)

On the contrary, SATA speeds are generally better and I recently bought a Toshiba 2 TB from ITDepot and a 2TB WD Green from Flipkart and the Toshiba drive went upto 113 MB/s while the WD Green was limited to only 95 to 101 MB/s max. Product links are also over my NAS thread.

I agree,Sata is about 60 % faster easily.. .. I have corrected it in my previous post too.. thanks for pointing it btw

Do you mean to say if I connect my 2.0 USB HDD to a 3.0 Port on PC, it will give better speed than it would on a 2.0 port? I thought the usb 2.0 connector on the drive is always the bottleneck. Will check this also today and report! :)

Here is the link.. seems like a good deal...

2 TB Seagate EXPANSION 3.5 inch 2tb external hdd with usb2.0 + usb 3.0 sealed | eBay

My experience with Seagate has been HORRIBLE.

EVERY SINGLE Seagate drive that I have bought .... Internal or External has failed.

The 3 year warranty is Nonsense. After 3 weeks ( what drive will you use for those 3 weeks ? ) they replace with a REFURBISHED drive.

Again, EVERY ONE OF THE REFURBISHED Drives has failed.... Data Loss TWICE:mad:

I will NEVER Use a Seagate Drive, even if given to me free. My data is worth more ...

I hope your doubts are clarified now, indeed I was surprised to see this for the first time.

Yup. USB 3.0 helps 2.0 devices also to some extent. 30 mbps to 40 mbps sequential read and write (33%) speed improvement. Not much improvement in smaller files or random access.

But difference between 2.0 vs SATA is quite huge. 300% more read / write speed for sequential data.

So my conclusion is that unless it is moved often, people should not buy USB (2.0) HDD for desktop PC, thinking that it is flexible. Better to go for internal HDD only.

Sorry ceekay, I am not sure abt sp road. But you have to ask atleast 10 shops to get better price in sp road, in between every shop in sp road is linked , so they will have difference in Rs.50 n Rs.100 between shops.
