Thanks to you all, a lot of us now understand that Indian HD DTH is not up to the mark yet (understatement). But lets just say that this is what is available right now and its a take it or leave it situation.. If I want to switch from SD to HD, which is the best option available? All i care about is picture quality. I've stuck to reliance BIG TV since the day it was launched because it gave me the the best PQ available through component out in comparison to others hands down!! and that compensated for the poor customer care and slow software. But now, the new logo is just too much risk for my Pio and it is my prediction that this logo will be the end of reliance big tv for all plasma owners.

Well it would have to be big tv HD having seen TS+ HD.I also saw airtel HD

But the software is still buggy. It may hang sometimes and may not respond provided you opt the HD-DVR STB.The HD only STB is better.

They currently don't have discovery HD channel nor do they have regular SD channels such as discovery turbo, science.
Presently they have NGC HD,star cricket and ESPN HD.Movies NOW HD will be added any time. They also have the star plus HD which is a upscaled channel but i see negligible difference compared to regular star plus on my lcd.

Even regular channels are better in big tv ,compared to tata sky and airtel.

After BIG TV i wud recommend u Sun direct though u need to empty ur pockets as the packages are damn costly else Airtel will be a gud option too.

Thanks... Big Tv has also added iconcerts in HD & SD both which sounds interesting.. Any ideas about a campaign against their logo??

How about Videocon D2H HD DVR? They seems to have max number of channels some of them are not available on any other DTH in India (like NGC channels). Also, they seems to be coming with a dedicated 3D channel as well which sounds very interesting. Also they call their Audio to be "HD".

Has some one investigated or reviewed D2H HD in terms of PQ and SQ? And does it carry 96kHz Audio when they say HDD "High Definition Digital" audio? Also, is it broadcasting DD5.1 Audio as available on HD channels?

At my home we have Reliance , Tata sky and SUN HD. Out of the three SUN HD has the best picture quality for HD channels but the Logo sucks big time.Tatasky HD is the worst in picture quality, reliance is in the middle but it does not have much HD channels and the software is a nightmare.

So as of right now we have Tata Sky HD on the bottom slot for PQ only.. and Reliance Big tv HD & Sun HD competing for no.1 slot..
More inputs on dish HD and Videocon HD needed please

How is Sun HD audio clarity , Specially on HD channels ?

Well initial owners response is that the STB hangs and lots of pixelation.

Dish HD is a good option, however they are SEVERELY challenged to give proper Audio as they keep tweaking with them. Some of the HD channels have distorted audio. Since past few days Audio is coming majorly from left or right channel on most of the HD channels. Also they have picture corruption issue on the new HD channels for which they changed my antenna and cable, didn't help.

guys beware of big tv. i was once a subscriber. immensely stupid and dysfunctional customer care support.

not that tata sky is any better but at least they try. dish tv is a good option as well. not airtel though, its not even HD.

The audio quality of SD channels are not bad and in HD channels it does sound a little better.

Did not really observe the difference in audio quality between the DTH providers cause most of the tv's which use HD DTH at my home use the tv's speakers, the only tv which is connected to external amplification is the one i use and that has BIG HD DTH and it sucks.

Do not ever go for Dish Tru HD, 30 HD channels are just fake SD channels converted to HD. To add up they require HD customers to opt for the Highest Base package + HD Starter pack which shoots the monthly package to Almost Rs 500 +

Personally speaking abt Dish TV has the worst PQ in SD STB's compared to Tata Sky. (Note: I am not talking abt HD STB's) even in 32 inch TV u find pixellation in many channels , may be u can even count the pixels :P

For HD : I wud recommend u Airtel DTH as ur fed up of Big TV.

For someone who hasn't invested (?) in an HD STB, I'll recommend waiting for a few months as the current pathetic scenario improves. That way you'll money will not be wasted like those who have already invested in HD STBs.

I have used both Dish Tru HD and TataSky+ HD. TS HD service does not have many channels and the PQ of both SD & HD channels are quite bad. But the interface, EPG, general product quality, etc makes it a better buy for me. I got irritated with all the freezes that the zenega box suffered and the non functional epg + poor interface compared to TS. I feel that the poor PQ of TS is compensated by the other parts of the whole experience which makes TS a good choice.

I already had a TS SD box and a mega pack subscription. So for me TS was a cheaper option also. Rs. 4000 for hd dvr + nothing extra for the subscription v/s rs. 3.6k (if remember correctly) + approx rs 500 per month for the service from Dish. But to me cost was not the only criteria. The general product quality and ease of use is also a big factor. I do not want great PQ from a STB that needs to be hard reset every time i change inputs on my AVR.

One interesting thing with the TS+ remote is that it has virtually the same layout as the SD box along with some extra keys for the DVR. The SD Box's remote works perfectly with the TS+ HD DVR. The remote with the dish box was quite bad.

I still get calls from Dish TV people to reactivate my connection. The latest offer they gave me was that if i paid for 2 months, i get 2 extra months free. But the quality of the Dish TV product was too bad.

IMO do test out the interfaces and remotes of the different DTH service providers. Some have very bad quality interfaces which makes using them a pain.

I agree on SD STB of Dish TV, but TS has worse SQ on most of the Hindi and English entertainment channels which makes it tough even to listen to dialogs which is TERRIBLY IRRITATING to me. Music is mostly muted from mid high frequencies which is another BIG SET BACK by TS. Some of the channels on Dish SD looked like HD on my TV which NONE of TS channels look even if I use identical AV (composite) cables. The pixellated channels like HBO, CNBC TV18, Times Now looks FAR better on Dish HD box due to EXCELLENT upscaling on the STB.

TS+HD box has been VERY Disappointing to me as I do not see anyway to get an acceptable quality especially the BLURRED SD pictures makes my eyes keep trying to focus when looking at faces, objects and text as it bloats both audio and video that you need to FOCUS on them to see and listen making your eyes fatigued easily and brain tired when trying to DECRYPT what the other person is TALKING about!

I can tolerate highest pricing of Dish HD and STB quality issues (which are now resolved completely after 2 replacements), however, just can't tolerate these content quality issues on TS when I usually get LASER SHARP Audio and Video on almost all the channels on Dish HD even with their current technical issues which can get easily resolved by Audio tweaking and fixing uplinking facility ONCE THEY LEARN IT HOW TO DO. TS on the other end needs more bandwidth to improve channel quality and I doubt me campaigning against them ALONE for this would yield any fruitful result especially when we compare recording times of these DVRs which are inversely proportional to PQ and SQ!!!

This is off topic, however you should get your Dish HD box replaced if you witness hanging and rebooting issue like I had before the warranty expires. If you don't want to keep it for these issues, you should atleast let their marketing team know and escalate to get a refund for the cost of STB. We should not be held responsible for incompetent service by these DTH providers and loose our money for no fault of ours. If we buy a box, we should be free to switch between operators like in GSM mobile phones and if we can not do that, we should return the box and claim a full refund especially during warranty period of the product!

I have been using sunHD for almost a year now. I am just abt 10% satisfied with the product.
10% because, IPL is broadcasted FOC and HD movies are available.

Most of the times there is some or the other problems with the HD channels and you will not be able to view it.

Just got Tata sky HD+ and trust me, NO BIG DEAL!!! The SD channels on my earlier BIG TV via component was much better. Even the PQ of new movies released in the last 2 years which were playing yesterday was not at all satisfactory..
Sticking to the topic, PQ wise, so what if dish tv is just upscaling its channels, i am sure they would be better than watching SD on any other HD or SD DTH
