142 min; dir: Sam Mendes; Starring: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Brnice Marlohe, Albert Finney

Rating: 5 Stars

Last thing first- "James bond will return", says the closing credit. I honestly doubt that. But like one of the title's " Never say Never again" maybe i'll be proved wrong, happily.
The opening sequence is fast paced and action packed. Typical of Bond movies. You don't want to miss it.Alas, India missed the opportunity to host it as our ministry took too long to approve it. Turkey was happy to oblige and become a part of Bond history. But that's about it, once the sequence concludes you know that this movie is going to be different from it's predecessors, lot different.

Sam Mendes keeps the audience captivated through excellent story telling. The sequence of events are exciting and fresh to the series. While some of my friends walked out with mixed feelings, i am sure they would have loved the movie if they had no pre-conceived notions and/or expectations. The story is logical and fits in well with the world today. It is the most realistic Bond film ever.
The cinematography is superb. A good part of the movie has been shot at night and one gets to experience all shades of black and grey with some excellent contrasting colors in Shanghai. The oriental culture is captured in all it's glamour, right from the modern buildings to the traditional dragons. The plain & natural visuals of Scotland are equally appealing.
The background score is superb and has the right punch delivered throughout the movie. Adele is awesome with the title track.
Daniel Craig portrays an aging agent beautifully. The wrinkles on his face adds to the character. Yes, he is still a borderline alcoholic and a womanizer. Judi Dench is superb with her portrayal of "M" who takes tough decisions and lives to face the consequences. There is a lot more screen time she shares with the protagonist. MI6 recruits some fresh blood and the characters add a nice twist. Javier Bardem is unlike any other villian you have seen so far and is a delight to watch. He brings in humor in the otherwise serious story.
You still have some of the usual's; Martini, shaken not stirred, Aston Martin etc.Although there was news of Bond sipping beer in the movie, I couldn't catch him having Heineken.
Overall i'd recommend this movie for it sheer entertainment and a different perspective. It's a must watch for all. Happy Viewing

I felt it was better than the sum of both previous Daniel Craig bond films. From what I know it's Craig's last bond film.

It was definitely not a movie one walks out on unless they are weak on comprehending the plot or have preconceived notions.

I quite enjoyed it.

Hi

In my opinion Bond movies lost its charm with the introduction of Danial Graig and the absence of Bond Theme Music. If it is the last film of Danial Graig i will be happy.

Hi,
In all the media this movie has a good review.
I watched it on the first day and was disappointed.

Nothing to praise on the action scenes, expect the first fight all were just a regular fights. Poor dialogues. The movie is slow paced and lacks depth in its script. Bond as a hero is to save the world, but here he is limited to saving M. Where are the bond girls, gadgets, cars and not to forget the travelling to different countries.

Other than the media reviews, I think this is what felt by people who really saw the movie.

I must be someone from the media :p

Sure the new bond movies featuring Daniel Craig are not as funny as the older ones, i agree. :)

lol i used to laugh a lot while watching the old bond movies on how it used to have No story line, no plot, disgusting acting, no message but now it is all ruined because Craig :D

The Austin power flicks were a good match for old bond movies i hope they release more of them.

And I was looking forward to watching it this weekend.

PS - Not sure why so many people don't like Daniel Craig.... Daniel Craig is not Bond.com | DCinB Classic Bond Site

I personally thought Casino Royale was one of the best bond movies ever! Quantum Of Solace though was definitely weak.

The weakest Bond for me though was Pierce Brosnan... the guy never looked like hurting anybody but himself.

Roger Moore is my favorite Bond because he always looked like he was having the most fun. I also liked Timothy Dalton because he brought a certain ruthlessness to Bond's character that only Craig has managed to do again. The real Bond character (in the novels) is a ruthless assassin... all the girls, gadgets, etc. are secondary.

Go ahead. You'll enjoy the movie. And remember to cast your vote:)

I watched it yesterday and it was as gud as i had imagined, I guess Sam Mendes as made bond movie more real and close to subjects then focusing too much on stereotype gadgets and bond gals, its dramatically gripping and beautifully made, more over its more then few pains and fights, but it gives the sense of mortality from bond pov, i guess cinematography is by Roger Deakins is absolutely brilliant, no wonder he has 10 Oscar nomination,
I wonder why people think Daniel Craig is not right bond,Yes,he looks ridiculously buff. but he is very compelling and he do soulfulness to him. more like Roger Moore,
I think its an excellent movie and i think Bond franchise is heading in right direction, though future looks scary in an entirely new way,

4Star/5

Watch it with an open mind

The movie didn't have as much action as I would have liked...no cool gadgets/cars was also a slight disappointment. Somehow feel the villians in batman movies are a lot more convincing and menacing than in this and previous bond movie

I watched it at the the new PVR IMAX at the Forum.

Movie:
Was worth the one watch in the theater. No Gadgets, no fancy cars, no explosive action sequences, save for the one opening the movie. Focus is more on the "Human" side of the characters which seem to be the trend now (Like the Dark Knight Rises or Spiderman etc.) Daniel Craig's best performance till date. Nice cinematography. Story and screenplay is fairly engaging.

Theater:
New an First IMAX in Bangalore. Average I would say. Modified existing theater to IMAX and it shows. Seating gallery is now such that you will see the heads of those seated in-front of you at the bottom of the screen as the screen spreads from ceiling to floor.
Huge screen, Floor to ceiling. Good brightness, some pixellation visible, panning shots look horrendous and blurry (may need to be shot in higher frame rate).
Above average seating comfort, average legroom taller folks will have knees hitting the seat at the front. People walking to their seats will have to force the people seated in the next row to move their seat-backs to upright position.
Sound disappoints, better sound at the normal PVR theater according to me. Dialogues seem muffled and unclear, and balance seem to be towards the right. Clarity and separation muddled. LF is good, you can 'feel' the explosions.
No Breaks! Come on all that soft-drink will have to go somewhere :). All these may be teething issues, but expecting better IMAX at the Vega Mall as that is being custom built. All in all worth the princely ticket price as this was my first IMAX experience .

~Cheers!

Hi,
Whts the price of tickets, I had heard PVR is coming up with IMAX somewhere in Whitefield, what happened to that plan, btw where is this Vega Mall?

Tickets are at 680 bucks. These are weekend prices. Not sure about weekday prices. PVR has been reported to have a deal with IMAX for 4 theaters in Bangalore. This is the first of the lot. Second is coming up at the under construction Vega Mall at the junction of Bannerughatta Road and the Outer Ring Road, near shoppers stop. Not sure where the other 2 theaters are coming up.

~Cheers!

Didn't like it - the story was all too predictable and lame. Daniel Craig's acting was a bit forced. There were some ridiculous plot holes. Thank god someone else paid for the ticket.

After watching the absolutely brilliant Cloud Atlas the previous night, this felt rather lame.

I will be watching it tomorrow morning.

I liked casino royale of the bond movies by Daniel Graig. For me worst bond is George Lazenby and then Timothy Dalton. Others are good as per the movie. All time favourite bond is Sean Connery.

I too miss the bond theme music in the last few films.

Though I didn't watch the movie yet I would like to give my point for NOT appreciating Daniel Craig as a "OO". Bond is not about the kills and might not be about the gadgets all the time.. we know gadgets dont make bond, resourcefulness, quick wit & doing all that and making it look effortless does!! with a smirk @ the face of danger(or Enemy with an upper hand) with the right amount of confidence, not too high making it seem hes arrogant or full of himself(Like what I see in Daniel Craig) and not tooo serious and tensed and just about hoping forit to work... (Like Timothy Dalton during fight sequences..) and bond movies were not entirely around action .. there was a plot always.. and these days every old movie seems redundant and so the plot seems lame.. like eg: in 70s attacking a nation was huge.. now.. World domination is getting to be a common...If you read Ian Flemmings book, Bond is a ruthless killer before getting a double 'O' status, but he was never shown as a 'green beret' sorts... Hes healthy and fit for a fight but not too much in to bone breaking combat style always just as he 's depicted in the current Bond movies.. I remember reading bond as resourceful and more into a adept and smart fights rather than brutal force fights.. .

I can never accept Daniel Craig for bond... bond was not taught to be suave That's what he brought to the table with his character. Bond has always been merciless when it came to his enemies. But his moves are never read on his face. Enacted extremely well by Sean Connery, fairly proficient Pierce Brosnan or pulled through by Roger Moore to an extent.. George Lazenby sucked the Bond character out of the role , Timothy Dalton was right there showing hes loss of cool during combats.

FYI... Pierce Brosnan was asked for 'The Living Day lights' but he couldnt as he was already bound in another contract for 'Remington Steele'(People who watched this sitcom in 90s would tell he was a true choice to be a Bond) at that time...Finesse, resourcefulness, quick wit, and of course the 'ever so smooth with the ladies' and definitely a bit of luck make oo7 who he is.. all are a MUST... the writings of Ian Flemming also define Bond as athletic & just athletic :). Pierce lacked there and that being the reason his shirts seldom came off, on screen...

That's the digital IMAX for you. Its a 2k projector (read 3 chip 1080p DLP) with a big screen size. Tha'ts the reason you see the pixellation. It comes nothing close to what film IMAX is. Too bad IMAX is taking the digital path. There is a reason the digital version of IMAX is called Lie-Max by movie fans

Too bad your first IMAX experience turned out to be this. Here is the list of IMAX theaters in India. The ones denoted by "D" are digital.
http://www.lfexaminer.com/theaIntl.htm#INDIA

The Big Cinema IMAX in Wadala is the biggest dome screen in the world. Too bad they converted it to Digital. Its a totally amazing experience to see IMAX shot film (like Dark Knight, Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol, Dark Knight Rises) in a real IMAX theater.

I never compared the various actors that played Bond. Each one had his own style and each became boring/repeating/predictable towards the 3rd movie onward, although that too is predicatble.

I have read some of the Ian Fleming stories and the Bond depcited in books is much different. For example, in From Russia With Love, in the book when Bond is asked to travel and seduce the Russian spy, he complains bitterly about him being used as a near equivalent of a male prostitute while in the film he smiles mischieviously and says to M, "well Sir, I am not really doing anything at the moment ...". The point being, let the actor go, concentrate on the story and the entertainment value.

I personally thought that Casino Royale (2006) was the one of the best (if not the best) Bond movies because it had a good story and a plot. And although I liked Roger Moore the best, his Octopussy, A View to a Kill, etc. were damn right silly or at least I think so.

Coming to the poll, I will see the movie in halls once and then buy the BD. I never download torrents. Multiple visits to theater? Pay Rs. 250 per person per viewing plus parking plus Rs. 60 for a bottle of mineral water, etc.?

David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas is the most riveting, unputdownable work of fiction I have read in recent years. I am looking forward to watching the film.
