I own a first generation iPhone (2G). I had never listened to music on it using headphones because of that recessed jack but recently I got two earphones which fit without any adapter and also got an adapter just in case. I was surprised at the sound quality coming out of it. It plain sucks. Highly fatiguing sound, shrill highs, thin mid-range.

There are no issues with earphones insertion, either in my ears or in the iPhone. Same MP3 files sound excellent on my iPod nano. I also tried my trusty Philips SHP805 but same crappy sound. Has any one else experienced it? I don't mind not using it as a music player but still surprised by its audio quality.
