I am looking for speakers to connect to Yamaha RX-V667 AVR. I listen to Music most of the time and movies once in the while. I use a HTPC, Yakamichi Tape Deck and a Akai turntable as the source. Currently I use speakers cannibalized from my Sony portable music system .

I want to experiment to get better sound. I have managed to get a pre-approved spending budget :yahoo: (to spend my own earned money ) of around 2 lacs for the speakers.

What will be the recommended speakers. Where do you find good dealers in Pune where you would find good speakers?

Woah!!! Nice budget..off the top of my amateur head I would suggest Thiel or FOCAL :D .. though I have not heard thiel have heard focal and it was a treat... people recommend these for that budget.. there's Monitor Audio Gold series ..GS as a follow up... but I am not sure how well your receiver will drive those speakers.. so have a looksie by taking your receiver along http://www.hifivision.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Did some research on thiel and focal. I seem to get the impression that people have liked thiel better. Any dealers in India? What about cadence? Should I change my AVR and get an amplifier instead? The other thing is that I have managed to get a 4BR flat with one 200sqt room dedicated as a music/home theatrer room. So will floor standers be an overkill?

I think this bug of improving the sound quality has bitten me after listening to Shiva's Acoustic Portrait equipment at Chennai HFV meet. I have never liked Carnatic music. But for the first time listening to Carnatic music played on Acoustic Portrait speakers I was able to enjoy the music. The source also was a Acoustic Portrait CD player. So I firmly believe that the equipment plays a major role in appreciation of music. I am a newbie and I believe that I can achieve Hi-Fi equipment Nirvana with the help of fellow members.

If u are goin for a 200k budget speaker system.. I advice you to get a power amp also... since yamaha 667 has Preouts... lucky to get preouts on a mid range AVR...exploit them...Buy a Emotiva poweramp or even rotel and matching speakers with it....

look at Cadence seriously, not too sure of prices though. Their showroom is at east street if I am not mistaken.

And yes you would need to move towards the Stereo Amp,

Yup As the gurus have declared a power amp is the sensible way to go with the 667 pre outs u r in luck...and Cadence is surely an option but I personally haven't experienced listening to them and yeah for a 200sqft ie ~15x14 floorstanders are going to be heavy but you can always fill the room with proper absorb-ers to give your ears enough comfortable listening. Floorstanders are amazing!!! but its up to you if u chose. If they feel overpowering you can always go for bookshelves. FYI , I speak from very little experience as am just an amateur in this field..but have been going around looking at speakers in similar dimension audition rooms coincidentally.

Guys, Have gone for the Polk Audio RTI A9. Just ordered it from Soundscape Aundh after 1 hour of audition. Before selecting this, I compared this with KEF Q500, Focal Chorus 816. I liked Focal too but I felt, RTI A9 excelled in the mid and high frequency. The tabla and drums sounded slightly better in Focal Chorus 816. Maybe the low frequency could open up after break in.

Now will have to buy speaker cables and spade. Will solder the spade myself. where in Pune can I get spades, banana plugs?

hey bro..are you using a power amp with the 667 cauz heard those RTi A9s are power hungry .

You went from a 2 lacs budget speaker to Polk A9s? Any reason? There would have been lots of brands to pursue.

On a side note, the polks do match with the 667 from a power perspective and dont need a separate amp to drive them efficiently.

Lack of patience and time to visit multiple shops. I can use the money saved to buy a high end cd player and a Macintosh. At the moment I felt satisfied with the sound quality heard and the amount I paid. Like photography, this event wont be the end of a journey

Not sure what you mean by high end but you may have a few options for good CDPs. However a Mac is out of your saved budget for sure and then you will have to change your polks as well when you get there.

I am using it with 667 itself. However I will not be able to drive the polks with the full 500w

The intel Mac is available for 50k at Croma. That leaves me with 75k budget for a good sound card (i already have built a HTPC with 7.1 HD audio) and a CDP.

Congratulations for your new speakers.:yahoo:
Invest in some good power amp if you really want to move those 6 woofers:ohyeah:
Love those Massive speakers.

Sam, I just learned something about bi-amping speakers. My Yamaha AVR gives around 90w/ch. So if I bi-amp, I should be able to supply 180w to the speakers. Isn't it?

Since I will never require to use the speakers at full volume, I should be fine without a dedicated 2channel amp. Am I right in making this assumption?

Hi,
With Bi-Amp you'll still be sending only 90 watts to the woofers ,and the other to the Mids & Tweeter.
Your Avr can easily power the A9's but I feel a dedicated power amp will make them more dynamic & wholesome.

Yamaha 667 with RTi A9s.. Bro seriously consider a Power amp... It will drive out the real Strength of these A9s... and when u already hav the option of adding a Power amp to yr V667 ...!!

Thanks you all. Which amp will be suitable to drive the RTI A9. I guess amplifiers will add its own color to the music. Can the amplification of any amplifier be linear and have a flat frequency response?

Now I am landing into a practical problem. Too many equipment to switch on to play music (UPS+HTPC+AVR+AMP). How do I automatically switch on the amplifier the moment I turn on the AVR. THe Yamaha avr has a trigger out which can be used to trigger an amplifier. Are there switch available in the market which switch on equipment based on some input?

My ears are finally breaking in to the RTI A9. They no longer feel the RTI A9 sound to be so bright. I want to now improve the sound quality as I don't feel that I am happy.

1) I use a self mader HTPC as the source. I use the onboard realtek 7.1 audio using AL889 codec. How much improvement can be expected moving to ASUS Xonar/Juli@ sound cards?
2) Should I go for an external DAC? Do DAC give legendary improvement over onboard/additonal sound cards?
3) Should I buy a good CD Player? I am getting a CD player at Soundscape (Magnat Brand) at 12,500/- (have to get the exact model number). Will a pre-owned CD player be a good option?
4) Should I buy an external amplifier or try bi-amping my RX-V667? If the choice is an external amp, which amp can bring out the max from RTI A9?

Some points to be noted

1) I have already tried using an ordinary electric cable and 16 AWG speaker cable using a switch to switch between the cables -- absolutely no difference
2) I do find difference between MP3 with bitrate > 192 KHz better than 128 KHz
3) I use mediamonkey with WASAPI output plugin.
4) My final room size will be 18 x 11 ft square

NOTE: I tested my ears with different frequency and I discover that my 47 year old years can hear upto 17200 Hz while my son's 16 year old years can go upto 18000 Hz
