Hi

I have a pair of wooden speaker stands built from a single block of teak wood of a little more than 5 inches square.. The base plate is 1.5 inches thick and I have wooden floor tiles... Do you think adding speaker spikes at the bottom of the base plate will help the sound - tighter bass ?

I have been advised to use open frame stands by Vivek (Mumbai) and other FMs but wanted to know if by adding spikes like the ones below will help improving the sound?

Thanks Saikat for the thread... What are the plummets known as in the hardware shops? They seem like a good solution....
They are good indeed. Made of solid iron. And costs much less than so called audiophile spikes.

In West Bengal, the hardware stores call them 'olon'. Alternatively, you could take the photo and show at your local hardware store.

try the spikes first - magma used to have them ready or maybe get it fabricated locally.

:-))

The open frame stands will make a difference IMO but weather the difference will be upto your taste is another matter.

Been thru open frame stands for Epos M12i ( refer google for ST12i stands ) and currently use the conventional heavy mass stands at present for the Merlins.

The lossy ( pen frame") are made of thin walled tubes.

Prem, I got these made as they were simple to make and looked nice..I know they are not ideal and hence wanted to know if by adding spikes, I could improve them.. I have also placed small wooden blocks between the stands and speaker base which had made quite a bit of difference (special thanks to FM Vivek). Changing the stands would be my last option and I wanted advice on how I could improve the present stands.. Spikes is the first option and Saikat shows a very simple use of the Plumb Bobs which are cheap and should work effectively. Anything else I could do to improve the stands ????

Panditji, I don't think what u have in the picture is a lossy design

Steel spikes are probably the best option. They sound most neutral. I would stay away from brass and copper. You can get the spikes from Magma. He makes steel spikes. Alternatively get thick stainless steel screws from a hardware store. Go to a machine shop. They will turn one side and make it like a spike. The other end screw on to your wooden base.

Between the bottom of the spike and your wooden floor use copper pennies or euro 1 cent coins. Any coin that u use should be copper based.
