Hi Guys

I have read alot over the last 3-4 months that i have been a member here. So i thought i would ask my distinguished forum members to help me pick the right speakers for my kind of music.

Parameters to consider for all -
Room Size - 14*10
Budget - 25K for speakers
Amp - to be considered post speaker selection
Presently looking at only bookshelves - after saving up - will look at floorstanders/sub.
Listening Distance - 8+ ft
Sources that i have - Portable HDD through a DVDp or IPod (music ripped in FLAC)
Music I Listen to (Most Important):
- Classical Rock/Metal (Floyd, Sabbath, Queen, U2 and the likes)
- Progressive Rock (Porcupine Tree/Dreamtheatre/Opeth/Blackfield and the likes)
- Solo Guitarists (Petrucci/Satriani/Yngwie Malmsteen/Steve Vai/Eric Johnson etc.)
- Instrumental/Post Rock/Ambient/Electronica (Liquid Tension Experiment/God is an Astronaut/Explosions in the Sky/Sigur Ros/Mogwai etc.)
- Trance (Tiesto/Van Dyk/Armin Van Burren etc.)
- Last but not the least am a Bengali so a little Rabindrasangeet (but that is more for the pleasure of the family and making them listen to my music system and bragging about its sound quality and why it was a good buy)

I think that is comprehensive. Hope i have not missed out on anything.

Looking forward to getting confused by you all, before i start my search.

Quad 11L2 should fit the bill. PSB also has a bookshelf model around 22K but the 11L2 was better. Or buy Quad 12L2 for around 35K, I don't think there is anything available in india to beat this on VFM, build quality and sound.
A word of caution, the quads may not play metal in the manner you want like it so audition it.

User S520! Definitely at least audition it......it doesn't go as low as some of the others, but what it does it does splendidly and you can then augment it with a sub, which i am planning to do eventually, but even in its current form i love it to bits.

I listened to MA BR2 and Quad 11. I have a feel that BR2 may fit your taste. Your ears are the best and only judge though.

That would be like asking a thoroughbred race horse to pull a humble cart.
:p
Of course it can do.

try to buy an amp and speaker pair together. what u like in an audion might NOT be the speaker or the amp per se, but the entire package that comes with synergy between the two.

@KHK - I actually wanted to get recos from everyone for the speakers which would match the music i listen to and then move on to the matching amps for them.

From what i have got from all those who have replied are -
1. MA BR2
2. Usher S-520
3. Wharfedale (9.1/9.2/10.1)
4. Quad 11L2

So guys how about your thoughts on amps and do you think i should look at amps which can run floorstanders laters on as well? as in i do not want more than a 2.1 set up for music - though i might be wrong there.

I guess Vinod has listed most of the matching amps as per his experience except those for the Quad.

well Vinod i think first and foremost my budget of 25k would be busted if i go for FS. Secondly, i do not know whether my current room size would be the right size for them.

So if the size is right and i do not get to bust my 25k budget, then i guess i can go for the FS. Again, the budget is important as i would need to invest in a good amp as well.

actually i just had a look at your music again.......techno huh? the Usehrs might not be for you.....if you're not looking to add a sub hen the monitor Audio BR2 is probably the best option......goes pretty low and pretty clean.....it's not as detailed or as dynamic as the Ushers......but then you can't have everything!

Hi,
If you want good bass (In Techno or any other genre) I would strongly recommend 9.2. This is not to say they are Bass-boom boxes... I find them to be good all-rounders.

Don't decide on purchase without listening to these, specially considering your spkr budget limit at 25k. They would cost 14k approx, and you can add the balance 9k towards better amplifier or even a second-hand Sub SW150.

Regds,

Well psychotropic almost 90% of my listening is towards the instrumental oriented pieces of music - even if its metal/rock/whichever genre - i like to listen to long instrumental pieces. So any speakers which are good for instrumental music should be good for me i guess unless i can get an allrounder like sonosphere has mentioned.

First of all out of
MA, Quad, Usher and Diamonds - the diamonds stick out like sore thumb.

Not to say they are bad, but if you are willing to spend 25K, you should overlook them.
MA is more of sparkley, lively kind.
Ushers and Quads are more neutral sounding.
Quads have best midrange presence (around 600-1200Hz spectrum) that gives a forward speaking quality to vocals, violins, guitars, sax, trumpets.

You decide which thing appeals to you the most. You wont go wrong for the money you spend.

Now comign to wharf diamonds. Absolute delightful speakers, however, you can't compare a 15K speaker to 25K ones - there is a difference in resolution and dynamics, and frequency response/decay.

Thanks alpha for your detailed note.

I just wanted to know, what are the ball park prices for these speakers as in Quad and MA. I guess, Ushers are around 20-24k and Diamonds - 15-18k.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
