Streaming music is bad for the Planet

Do you think mankind ever cared about all this and weighed it against personal convenience?

There may be a chance that downloaded songs play better.
I have started downloading few youtube videos which I use often ( mostly on Yoga / workouts.)

Just when I have comfortably settled into Qobuz and Radio Paradise etc, this uncomfortable revelation…,

I guess when you stop streaming then the sales of records and CD's may go up.

At this rate along with streaming, we may have to stop breathing too as carbon dioxide gets realised into the atmosphere & is detrimental to the environment.

If all songs were downloaded instead of streamed, there would be an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions after the first listen.

So if everyone downloaded their music, maintained and ran their individual systems instead of storing them online - we would use less energy. That too in a world where data servers are increasingly becoming sustainability driven. Somehow our collective less efficient system will trump them by 80%?. Of course they didn't bother mentioning where they got the figure from but have mentioned source for some random things.

That being said, streaming has increased the carbon footprint with easy access to scores of music. But the article is just over the top

Here is more - if we are looking at the effects of streaming - the internet itself is a major contributor. From emails to banking transactions. From playing a game online to streaming a movie :). A simple hello to a friend on whatsapp or a family zoom meeting. The innocent arguments to the harmless discussions. It all adds up. Any monks out here?

OMG! What have we done!!!
What we are continuing to do!!!
The consequences…
Future generations will be cursing us.

Future generations will be cursing us.
I am already cursing me right now. I find the Mangalore weather getting unbearable these days. It was never like this earlier. It's getting worse as the years pass by.

Well, at least I have a few Class D amps in my chain.

The last time I was told smoking is terrible for the environment. Did I quit? Hell no... :p

With streaming, we are helping to eliminate the e-waste associated with physical media. The shipping industry contributes the majority of greenhouse gases to the environment because of their love for bunker oils. The music industry's contribution is like a drop in the ocean compared to that. So, we Music Lovers are not at Fault. ;)

Oh please!
Here are people owning multiple sets of amps , streamers , changing DACs like clothes , upgrading speakers like credit cards and streaming is bad for planet earth ?!

Little drops of water make…
I think the point of the article is that data storage and internet use including streaming movies, TV shows and music by billions of people together is energy intensive and leaves a significant foot print.

With every bit of data generated and used by each one of us being stored (forever) data server farms are growing like weed all over the world.

You are right this is not the only contributor, there are bigger culprits.
An individual decision to move from class A to D amps would be like a drop in the ocean. Giving up multiple systems….? (assuming they listen to one system at a time?) :) is another choice.
Will it make a huge difference? No. A small difference perhaps. Waiting for legislation to discourage/ban use of energy inefficient gear, (like two stroke engines, incandescent bulbs) will be too little too late I feel.

For me this article was another unpleasant reminder that climate change is happening, gathering momentum, and I (along with billions of my fellow species) am reluctant to change my behaviour in multiple ways that collectively may mitigate the damage to the environment.

Every drop/bit counts. We all have choices. The herd will follow or be forced to follow.

As on 2012, 30% of the Total Internet traffic is pornography. I believe "Audio Music Streaming" not even comes close to 1% of total internet Traffiic. We humans worry about small small things but fail to see the "Big Picture".

We have been told that Electric Vehicle is better than Petrol/Deisel Vehicle because Fuel engine emits Co2 and pollutes the environment. But nobody will talk about how much Co2 is emitted for manufacturing Batteries required for Electric vehicle.

You are right @sathtom
The carbon footprint of online porn is significant and estimated to be equal to that of Netflix
