You don’t have to have it facing forward directly or for that matter, in that particular spot (the platform). You can place the subwoofer anywhere in your room and those other spots will sound equally as good if not better. You can do the subwoofer crawl test to figure out where the other spots of your room are quite easily (not literally crawl, you can simply use an spl meter on your phone). I have placed mine diagonally behind my listening spot. Also, placing a subwoofer facing straight ahead is usually not a good idea even if its kept in front and the yamaha manual itself states that it should be placed diagonally so that the bass has a longer path to travel before it hits the corners of the room.
