Suitable speakr for Marantz PM-6003

Hi Kevian,

I am not an expert reviewer and neither am I good in expressing the terminology that audiophiles use. I just trust my instincts.
The Mordaunt Short Carnival6 tower speakers are very easy speakers to drive but can become difficult if you want to get the sweet spot like a possessed audiophile.

I spent several hours listening to the same track over and over again while repositioning the speakers in several positions, measuring each one of them and noting it down on paper like a nerd..... It's a good learning experience with this set of speakers.

The sound reproduced from the Carnival6 is neither too strong on the bass side nor too sharp on the bright side, instead has good mid range tones within the listening frequencies. It is unlike the Avant 904 that I previously owned which was more bright and lacked the bass. What it lacks is image and openness of the sound. I have actually bi-wired it with silver coated copper speaker cables for the highs and copper for the lows to extend the sound frequencies from normal speaker wires.

When the Carnival6 is connected to the PM7001, things change and the speakers become more active and lively.

During the audition of these speakers with Marantz PM7003 and PM8003 and CD5003, I played the following tracks:

Chris De Burgh - Lady in Red (very smooth with PM8003, the sound was flowing in the wind)

Enya - May It Be (the woofers could barely manage with the extremely low bass sound without distortion)

Eagles - Hotel California (good and smooth)

Extreme - More Than Words (the sound of the fingers plugging the guitar chords were noticable but it lacked just a little brightness)

Lady Gaga - Nothing Else (the sound of the bass guitar in the background seemed overshadowed with the overall sound, unlike the wharfedale diamond 9.3 that I had listened to before)

Dire Straits - Private Investigation (the sound of shattering glasses during the interlude of the song lacked the sharp and shrill sound but was audible)

Dire Straits - Telegraph Road (the beginning stage when the saxophone is played is accepted but not as good as I listen to in my car)

David Guetta Feat Akon - Sexy Bitch/Chick (for this song, I connected the subwoofer to enjoy the bass)

Kenny G - Sentimental (good)

Yanni - Live at Acropolis (managed to keep the sounds on the stage in the forefront and put the clapping sounds in the background away from the centre stage)

I would suggest to audition the speakers with tracks that you usually listen to most often.

Thanks a lot bro. So, if one wants to get the best of Carnival 6(with all its limitations) , do you have any recommendations?

cheers!!

Yahoo Sir, You are ready to spend 50K-60K on a combo but hesitant to plan a city trip at 10% of the cost. Believe me dude it will be worth the investment.

I have auditioned the WD9.5 with CA 550A, one of the best combo's I have heard in my audition spree so far. I have also auditioned WD9.5 with Denon 710, it was nice but CA was miles ahead.

Now, I am waiting to audition the Marantz with WD9.5 and the Yamaha A-S700 with Yamaha NS-555 speakers before finalizing the purchase.

Marantz is not available until mid-June as of now for audition here in Delhi, as soon as it comes, will share the updates.

Which city are you in?

Even I am waiting for an audition...I am not in Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai or Kolkata where the auditions can be arranged.. I am from a small town where there are no audition places to go for... Thats the reason I a m completely getting dependent on hear-say...

I somehow got the opinion that you are in Delhi. Sorry. ;)

Which dealer did you enquire. Its pretty strange that Marantz is not available. Did you check Bass n Treble?

My QUAD 12L2 with PM6003 never misses a bit of beat/bass/clarity or imaging when it comes to presentation, I am extensive listener of Enya, Yanni, Fusion (with extreme transient attacks), everything is handled with rock solid control, and class. It is something like a 16 yr old single malt. Quad is class! You need to be careful about component matching, they are NOT bright speakers, give them good power through low impedance cables, good does not mean more, but clean, with a bit of dynamic headroom. May be PM8003 will be even better, but for my rooms, they create a sound that has left me teary eyed may a time, and that is what we aspire for.

Please do not mount quads above your ear level, you will lose all the imaging that they are capable of. The problem i have is, these speakers are moving me away from old recordings as they kind of detail out the shortcomings of the recordings, at the same time, there is a lush presentation which may be bit bright at times, as Marantz is very slightly bright for Indian old hindi music. You need a NAD/Norge for those sort of music since these amps are bit laid back.

Hii...I am new to HIfi....
Planning to get Marantz Pm-6003 amp...
Please suggest matching speakers for it...
Wharfedales ?? 9.2 or 9.5 I hv heard tat dese2 are a great combo ... but will d 6003 be able drive 9.5s.....I heard d wharfies 9.5 at Vectors Bangalore some time back.... sounded good...

I have Marantz Sr 6004 with Boston 4000s. But Now i am going for Floor standing speakers. That is why i am changing it and finalised Wharfedale 9.5 with 9 CM as centre speakers. Boston 4000s satelite speakers are also very good if you have room size not more that 10' x 12'.

Hi Sanjay,

I think you have got the understanding wrong. The OP was asking for suitability with a "PM" 6003 "stereo" amplifier.
The advice you have provided is for , if i am not mistaken, an AV receiver meant for movies.

Hi all,

Need your suggestions for selecting speaker.

I am looking out to buy speakers for PM6003 within 50 to 60k Max. Open to BS or FS.
Music preference : I play a wide variety of music.
Room Size: 'L' Shape - should be around 500 Sqft.

Chid

Since u have a large listening area.. 500 Sq feet is pretty large so Floorstanders would be highly recommended... Since u are in Chennai u can ddrop by Cressida AV Zone (9500137182 Mr Ravi Kumar). and audition the Aviano s there.....
all the best.. My PM6003 is easily driving the Aviano 6 which I got 2 days back.. They should improve after abt 50 hrs of burn-in//break-in

I've auditioned Aviano 2,Mezzo 2 at Cressida sometime back, I didn't like the sound. Dali Ikon 2 was better. I've raised the budget to 60k to get a FS.

Waiting for Focal 714 v to arrive at Profx, Chennai.

Thats my personal opinion :).
