I heard that Dish TV STB has a option to set your output to NTSC, was wondering if TATA sky HD has this option.
Like I and Sanjay have said, no such term in HD and no such setting in Dish TV STB. Its just a different refresh rate setting from its default 1920x1080i at 50Hz. You could change the resolution to 720p or 576p and refresh rate on these resolution (including original 1080i) to 60Hz. Hope this clarifies further.
Actually, 'Koffee with Karan' is origianlly shot in 16:9 HD and therefore all Star World needs to do is show the original HD source and thus there would be no black bars to begin with, let alone the need for any cropping of the bars. 'Koffee with Karan' is the biggest example of how technically challenged, the majority of the people in this industry are. It also shows how incompetent people continue to run these companies with no repucerssions whatsoever.
I am not quite sure what it is that you are trying to state. As for my list, I have not missed any category. I have yet to come across a single movie that is presented in the originally correct aspect ratio but in a 4:3 frame. Basically every single movie shown in upscaled SD has been cropped to a narrower aspect ratio. In other words, 2.35:1 movies have been cropped to either 16:9 (1.78:1) or even worse 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio and 1.87:1 movies have been all cropped to 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio. Thus, even if they were to have cropped the black bars before upscaling, the e movies would still not be in the original aspect ratio. Althouhg, it would still be better than the current method of simply horizontally stretching the 4:3 frame to fill the 16:9 frame. But quite honestly, the task of taking the SD masters and then cropping the black bars to get a 16:9 frame before upsclaing is a task that is almost as big as simply creating HD masters from the original film source. It actually would be less work and probably less expensive for Star Movies to source HD masters instead of spending time , effort and money on creating new SD masters that would still end up having an incorrect aspect ratio and would also still only be upscaled SD.
Regarding Koffee with Karan and American Idol, I agree if they have access to the original HD or 16:9 masters, they should use them. I told of the WORST CASE scenario like they are doing currently, they should atleast crop the bars to achieve original 16:9 image. That's the least they should do in this regards.
Like I said, almost all the SD movies shown in Star Gold HD have content of 21:9 or comparable ratio, but presented in 4:3 format! Rang De Basanti, Zindagi Rocks are few examples. I have seen few movies in Star Movies HD as well showing 16:9 or higher aspect ratio mastered movies showing that way which is really a laughable matter..
UPDATE: Watch "Paycheck" on Star Movies HD... You would know what I am talking about.. mastered in 16:9 presented in 4:3 SD and upscaled blindly from there (like Koffee with Karan).
