Tata sky hd

i hope they show champions league in hd though .. which might be a good enough reason to know what to expect in the ICC cricket world cup
SunDirect HD, which I have, showed the IPL this year in HD and believe me the experience of watching cricket in HD was no less than the experience of watching the FIFA World Cup in HD, if not even greater.

I have got Tata Sky HD 2 weeks back. i have connected my Set box with My ONKYO807 reciever. Did any one notice that DICOvery Dolby is much better than National geographic HD. IN national geographic it only plays center channel speakers. They have a issue with there coding i guess. any one to confirm.

Yes, Voice of the narrator comes from the Front left channel most of the times but for NAT GEO HD adv sound comes from the center.

Do you use the video upscaling capability of Onkyo807? Specifically is there a difference in video quality of SD channels from HD STB once scaled by Onkyo807?

Has anyone tried using HDMI cable of better quality other than given with TS HD.IF anyone has already tried plz mention if there is any significant increase in PQ of sd and HD channel.

Was reading an cnet article earlier today -

CNET Quick Guide: HDMI and HDMI cables - CNET Reviews

- say's they don't find much difference between normal and costly HDMI cables. Not sure if the one coming with Tata Sky is good or bad though.

Yes. It does. Your TV can also do that. Upscaling at source (STB) is less bad than at receiving end (TV).
Actually that is not entirely correct. It actually depends on which of the two have a better scaler. Considering the cheap quality of the set-top boxes, I am quite sure the built in scaler of the TV will do a much better job.

The STB doesn't upscale anything, it just stretches the video.
That is not correct. The set-top box outputs only a single resolution, regardless of whether you watch a HD channel or a SD channel. Thus, very obviously the player does upscale the SD channels. Whether the upscaling is good or bad, is an entirely different issue. Also, due to the scaling to 1920x1080i the SD 4:3 picture gets stretched. This issue can be resolved by setting the set-top box to output the picture with pillar boxing. I assume that the TataSky set-top box has the feature. The SunDirect HD set-top box has the feature. The Dish TruHD box on the other hand, has the option in the menu but like so many other things with Dish TruHD, it does not work.

Unless the cable that comes bundled from TataSky is faulty and totally useless I can assure you that there will be absolutely no difference, regardless of what other cable you buy.

Agreed. It's much better to let the TV do the up-scaling. My opinion with regard to Airtel HD STB.

I thought he was talking about upconverting, like with DVD players. Scaling is no big deal. The problem with setting at set top box level is that with a mixture of aspect ratios there will always be some compromise

Scaling or to be more precise, upscaling and upconverting are the same thing. Scaling could also be down scaling, which is the same down conversion. Scaling is the technical term where as conversion is just a more commonly used term for the same.

Ok, so does that mean that there should be no difference in PQ between a normal DVD player and an upconverting one on a 1080p TV- since the TV will do the same kind of conversion as the DVD player? thanks

I am having a weird problem, the volume control from STB's remote is not working on HD channels, it works fine on SD channels though!!! Is it working for you guys??? Although I dont use the volume control on the STB's remote but still wanted to know!

Also, whenever I switch to any HD channel from any SD channels, there is a high frequency noise coming on the right audio channel for like fraction of a second (it happens only during the switch), is this normal???

Both video & audio is passing through my AVR to the TV through the provided HDMI cable!

has anyone experience audio problems in sd channels, like sparking sound coming every 8-10 minutes or so from tv speakers?
is it the STB which is culprit since i have tested both hdmi and digital outputs.

one thing for general info of others all sd channels are broadcast in 576i, hd channels are broadcast in 1080i.

edit: i checked using normal av output the disturbance in audio still comes at intervals, it was not there on normal tatasky which was installed before.
