here's a great tip to all of you who have owned a yamaha rx-v1600 av rec. or similar and have upgraded to a more advanced HD capable av rec. in the top yamaha line up and u still have your old yammy kept as a spare
also this tip is useful for those who have owned any amp similar to or higher than yamaha rx-v1600 and now have a denon or onkyo with dolby prologic IIz and you still have your old yammy with you
As we all know that the yamaha flagship reciever known as the rx-z11
features 11.1 channels , now a lot of yamaha users know that the mid segment yamaha series features front presence channels but unfortunately one can only use the front presence or the back surrounds
now speaking of back surround channels we all know that only a few of us have bigger rooms dedicated to our ht setups and placing 2 back surrounds instead of one doesnt make much of a difference because of less spacing between the back surrounds and thus only one back surround is sufficient to pan the sound from behind the listener just like a center channel does in between the front l and r.
now what my point is use the presence speakers instead of the back surrounds and your configuration would be FL,FR,C ,SR,SL,FHR,FHL,SUB
FHL & FHR stand for front height left and right. Now comes your old yammy which is capable of doing the same thing , now what you have to do is take a stereo rca cable and hook it up to the surround (SR SL) pre amp out of your main yamaha amp and hook the other end into any line in like dvd in or sat in of your older yamaha and also set the older yamaha to a configuration of using front presence channels instead of back surrounds
Now here's it the input to your old yamaha is that of SR SL from the new Yamaha and the old yamaha will process this info(when you put the old yamaha on dolby enhanced mode or any of the cinema dsp modes) and will output new channels which would be Surround height left (SHL) and Surround height right(SHR) and these channel will be output thru the presence speakers of the old yamaha and the center speaker will reproduce the surround back center or SBC
so in total now u have FL,C,FR,FHL,FHR,SUB,SL,SR,SHL,SHR,SBC(10.1)
NOW FIRE UP A BLURAY OF THE ORIGINAL PREDATOR MOVIE AND PLAY THE JUNGLE SCENE IN WHICH ARNOLD AND HIS MATES ARE DROPPED INTO THE JUNGLE BY HELICOPTERS AND SEE HOW THE HELICOPTERS HOVER ABOVE YOUR HEAD
3 DIMENSIONS ALWAYS MEAN X Y AND Z WE ALL HAVE X AND Y's and the 7.1 configurations create good 3d sound by proper speaker placement but if you add height ON THE FRONT AS WELL AS THE BACK IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE
People who technically understand how dolby prologic IIz or yamaha presence works will understand what i mean to say
and remember the front heights and the rear heights do not have any new sound on them they have a processed sound which is mathematically derived from the main channels then processed by gain control opamps and dsp engines
in simple words things will hover above you with a much better effect
