hi
bought a pioneer vsx 1020 from the US with a power consumption of 350 W. bought a step down converter rated at 400 W from chandigarh. Is it sufficient or will it have some negative effects coz i read somewhere that the converter has to be 1.5 times the rated wattage

Make sure it is a step down transformer and not a converter. The converters are meant for heating devices like electric blankets, coffee makers etc. The peak to peak voltage is 220 V. So if you connect it to an electronic device, they will get burnt. Some of the members of this forum already experienced this problem.

If it is indeed a step down transformer, then a rating of 1.25 to 1.5 times the required wattage should be sufficient depending on the quality of laminations and winding used in the fabrication of the transformer.

Hope this was helpful.

What is the difference between convertor and Step down transformer?

Any easy way to identify?

Thanks.

One easy way to identify a converter is that it is very light - weighing a few grams and has a wattage rating of 1000 to 1600. Even a 50 watt step down transformer will weigh at least 100 gms or more. A 1000 watt step down transformer is several kilos in weight.

for the equipment specified you require a step down transformer

220v-110v it is best suggested one with 500 W capacity. It should

be transform based and not SMPS. To my knowledge a unique standard

company in India is Maxine or Maxcon(MX) supplied by Shaw Industries

Richie street, Chennai also available in selected shops in Urband and Metros.
