a tata sky service personnel had come to my place last week to replace the cablling of the STB. earlier there was a single cable with a splitter at the end of the STB. now its being replaced with dual wires with no splitter at STB end. on being asked why so, he said its being done mandatory ONLY for tata sky+ users all over. the dual wires' purpose he said is something related to now horizontal as well as vertical transponders. said tata sky may be due to launch new HD channels by march-april, subject to satellite launch by ISRO. but he couldnt explain very well, and nor could i decipher much. so keeping my fingers crossed.

the tata sky logo is much transparent, unlike the airtel logo, which i've read creates a lot of IR problems in plasma TVs. though in a few channels, the tata sky logo could seem a tad more 'fuller' than on others, but overall, it has a very light presence. one could sample how the logo is by checking channel no. 100.

Tata Sky called me two days ago and asked for permission to change cables as their transmission patteren will be "changed shortly". The upgrade was free of charge, presumably because I am a "Mega Pack" subscriber.

The guys who came to change the cable,( actually they only added one cable, and removed the splitter- did mention that "many new channels" are coming and that the wiring was for " Vertical transmission" and not the exisiting "Horizontal" ......and said the change over would be in 4 to 6 months.

change over would be in 4 to 6 months.

Hmmmm. 4 to 6 months is a lot to wait. I am still in confusion whether to get the hathway hd which is adding new channels by feb end and does not have any logo or tatasky hd which seems better in the long run and has hd dvr option.

Damn its confusing.

if its hathway that you are contemplating over, i would recommend you to change over. i read about them a few days back and came out quite impressed. sadly, upon inquiring found out the service isnt available in my area yet (neither the broadband nor the DTH). check this thread if it helps you. a bit old, but should certainly help shaping up a decision :

Exclusive : Hathway HD Channels Pic !!!

Got my connection 'upgraded' yday - some info I could gather on this -

- All tatasky PVR customers using splitter will need to get this done - else using the 2 tuners in the set top box simultaneously for rec and watching may not be possible if the 2 channels in question have different polarity
- the polarity issue will be a reality if and when the GSAT 10 satellite is sucessfully launched and working properly and being used by tatasky - expected by June 2012 - the sat launch seems to be planned Q1 2012 but now little delayed
- 2 separate wires need to be run from the dish to the set top box - most likely a problem for people with internal wiring; more so for apartment people who are farther away from their dish
- extra wiring of whatever lenght required is free of cost - they also change the LNB at the dish
- the existing splitter will be taken back after the wiring is done - I guess one had to pay 100/- initially for that splitter is now compensated by the new wire put 'free-of-cost'
- Internal wiring, if insisted for the new second wire, will not be done by tatasky - they will only provide required length of wire and do the connection after the subscriber gets the internal wiring done on his own
- there is absolutely no change in the tatasky services (signal strength/quality/functionality) as of now due to the wiring
- the new wire; at least to my eyes; looks a little thinner than the exisiting one but seems to be of sufficient quality
- All this fuss will be meaningful in the near term only if the satellite launch is a success else no new channels or changes in tatasky untill probably the next satellite launch

I was planning to move from TS+ to TS HD+

The sale exec told me that they were planning on introducing a few additional HD channels by Mar-Apr.

But then it could be the 'sales talk'. Told him to call me back when the new channels are in :ohyeah:

I have 2 HD PVR and none of them have splitters. 2 wires run from dish to STB in both cases. Should there be any change in my setup?

I remember that the person was earlier installing a splitter but when I started talking about splitting signal of tata sky and running in parallel, he swiftly removed the splitter

Hmmmmm. Downside of Hathway HD is not having Star Cricket and ESPN HD :(
Also i heard that hathway has only bandwidth for 20 hd channels until they stop analog transmission completely which will free up the space. Also there are chances they might start adding their own logo.

Only those PVR subscribers having a splitter need to get it changed to two individual wires.. this is basically to have 2 independent signal sources with opposing polarity and differing voltages to be fed to the settop box without interference / cancelling each other out.

Tatasky pvr box has two tuners for simultaneous recording and viewing of 2 separate channels. With the launch of the new satellite tatasky will have hopefully newer channels possibly on different polarity and hence the need of dual wiring

I was told 2-3 months.

Yes, the new cable is thinner than the old, but I thought that's just a newer tech coaxial cable that is thinner.

On another thread/forum: there is talk of
- (speculation) vertical polarity being enabled on existing satellite
- (speculation) newly moved satellites horizons 2 or intelsat 15 may set india beam for tata sky
- (fact) one more HD channel is being tested on same tp
--- (speculation) either ten hd or movies now hd

For those who didnt know yet - The GSAT 10 launch is postponed - again.
Seems some issue with the launcher and that it will be good to go in a few days...

If this sat blows up  then i guess its the last nails in the coffin for TSKy!!

well i have a friend working in cnbc
i had asj=ked her why cnbc hd doesnt show on tata sky
she said they dont have the bandwidth for additional hd channel. so i think that is the problem

does any one know if the individual hd channels can subscribed on ts or do we have to get the whole pack.

There is an option to select individual HD channels in make my pack section. Will be useful if you want only 1 (or 2 ) HD channels.

The entire HD pack costs 100 (for 10 channels). If you opt for individual HD channels, it will be costlier if you select more than 2 channels (it will cross Rs.100)
