When TataSky is adding more HD channels

The money invested on Set Top boxes will stop me from changing providers as well, but I guess I can go without HD for a few months, since I am the only one who watches HD, rest of the family watches TV on normal SD Box

I will as well go ahead and remove HD and deactivate the HD box.

Can`t afford to buy a new STB right now. Actually I prefer just quite a few things to watch.

Enjoyed the last 2-3 years of cricket on TS, now a days don`t get much time and interest has drastically come down. Watch most of things via internet.

I thought with coming days watching TV will get cheaper day by day, it seems totally reverse.

Tata to HD...
I know that it is difficult to switch. This is where providers are playing monopoly with us. They know that it is expensive to switch - even more so with multi-TV connections (like me). DTH provider offer discount on STB for converting from SD to HD. They don't offer much discount for switching to them apart from some small rebate.

BTW, I do hope that TS will not come with a policy that says, "if you have HD STB then you must opt for at least one HD pack".

Dont watchy TV alomst.. abit of Discovery Turbo may be .. If only it were televised in HD I would ve spent more time on TV... :D .. as for my folks I think they dont really bother much for other Hindi Sitcom channels but sometimes pops n mom definitely like to watch Discovery science in HD :).. Darn the Hindi HD channels quality has improved.. if only Discovery HD would ve been made HD :(

I am always been a happy customer of tata shy but in the recent past I and pissed off with these guys. I pretty much bought all products released by tata shy and always been on mega packs with all possible channels and with two multi TV connection.

First thing every year they increase the Mega pack price, I need Sun Tamil channels as well so I have to go with Mega South HD pack which is 6900, I think last time I paid 5500 or something little more. Second they have increased the multi tv HD connection to 200/month.

I really think for the number of channels they are offering these charges are ridiculous. Also I asked them renew my multi tv connection for a year when it was 160 and for some reason they "forgot". For the last 2 weeks I have been talking to their customer care and still no resolution. This is the way they treat the customer who gives them most possible revenue...

Also these days their first level persons in CC are extremely rude. I don't shout or yell at them but for everything i say they take offence. I am just getting fed up with these guys , I feel like totally trapped because of my settop boxes but what the hell, my patience is really running out, but all I can do it take my business elsewhere....

Tatasky sucks big time.....and I'm well and truly frustrated...

One has to weigh the pros and cons. A new (HD) STB + installation will cost Rs. 3000 or so. But that is a one time cost. If the channel packages (recurring cost) save Rs. 1500-2000 annually, the STB cost can be recovered soon and then it makes sense to switch. But if the annual saving is less than Rs. 1000 then it does not.

I have made a comparison between TS and Videocon D2H:

First Year Cost
Single HD connection only:
TataSky Mega HD Pack: Rs. 6400/-
D2H: Rs. 7271/- (CPE=1890, Installation=1000, Rebate=-400, Platinum HD Package=5540, 50 days of free package when annual payment is done=-759)
Difference: 871/- extra for switching

Second HD multi-room connection:
TataSky Mega HD Pack: Rs. 2200/-
D2H: Rs. 3647/- (CPE=1890, Installation=500, Rebate=-400, Platinum HD Package=1920, 50 days of free package when annual payment is done=-263)
Difference: 1447/- extra for switching
------------------
Second Year Cost - Assuming ~10% hike
Single HD connection only:
TataSky Mega HD Pack: Rs. 7000/-
D2H: Rs. 5265/- (Platinum HD Package=6100, 50 days of free package when annual payment is done=-835)
Difference: -1735/- saving after switching

Second HD multi-room connection:
TataSky Mega HD Pack: Rs. 2420/-
D2H: Rs. 1821/- (Platinum HD Package=2110, 50 days of free package when annual payment is done=-289)
Difference: -599/- saving after switching
----------------
So after 2nd year, one is almost even. Of course, there are a lot of assumptions. For one, prices may go up with D2H. And there are some intangible benefits on TS:

- price protection
- free service visits
- 12 free movies (not much but still something better than nothing)

kix.. if u order online.. you'll get back Rs400.. so it helps to switch.. as I hv a megapack of Tatasky I will stick till next year Sep.. if by then, they don't kinda match the HD services of the likes of Videocon (22).. then Tatasky TA TA... ;)

I just switched from DishTV to TS last Jan. But that was Ok because switching to DishTV Tru HD would have costed me STB cost anyway.

My subscriptions comes up for renewal in the last week of Jan, 2013. And I have Rs. 900 credit with TS. I have four months still. So I will wait and watch.

I think Tata sky will add more channels since GSAT-10 launch is successfully. As immediate effect of this successful launch they have added 1 HD channels and 4 SD channels yesterday , guess reserve space got utilized....So I think Tata sky and videocon will have same # of channels soon, may be in another 3-5 months....

I was ok with not having HD channels all these while but their attitude is what irritating me, sudden price hikes and deteriorating customer service (at least in my case) , not a good sign for Tata sky

But i think if you cancel the connection mid way your annual subscription they refund the money right, I remember reading it somewhere

My annual subscription is in December. I will continue TS for 6m/1y to see how everything pans out.

Not sure if they refund the money, but in case if it is pro-rated, it remains in your account.

tata sky added colours hd yesterday

I am wondering how people who have the recorder units are using their second set top box. I used to own 2 boxes (living room/bedroom) but after the recorder, I've discontinued the one used in the bedroom as I can record something while home minister is watching her sitcoms. There's never been a need to watch/record a third channel at all at least in my case because of all the repeat telecasts.

I am seeing an interesting problem since the software upgrade of TataSky. The HD channels through HDMI are not sticking , i.e. it shows the video for a second or two and then its blank black screen. I can see all the channels via composite cable, I can see all the SD channels via HDMI but no HD channel. I have already tried different HDMI cables, different monitors(TV/PJ) but its the same behavior. I have even tried direct TS to TV connection but same thing.

Anyone seen anything like this?

The TS guy has no clue about whats wrong and says it will take couple of days to replace the ST box :(

Finally Tata Sky resolved my issue reg multi TV connection. They credited the differential amount (Rs 40 for 11 months) and renewed my multi TV HD connection from 1 year. At least after numerous phone calls they did this.....so i think i will wait watch for another 6 months before switching over....

@kneo: I my case we do, but guess its out of necessity. My parents live with me and they watch only tamil channels in their room....i use the TV in the living room with hd recorder...

Its usually the case for people with multiple TVs. I have a 32" LCD and a 50" Plasma but I have only one TS STB (and I don't even watch TV). The 32" is primarily used for the Wii and the 50" for TS and the home theater.

I have seen families with even 3/4 TVs or even 2 TVs with one in the living room and another in the bedroom and for such multiple STBs is a must.

Regarding recording - Is there anything worth recording on the TV these days... especially with all the ads where they play a 90 min Hollywood movie for 2 and 1/2 hours.

This is where recording helps, as you can watch it later by forwarding all the ads :)
Also some content in HD is good with mimimal ads now and can be recorded

There are some good programs on Nat Geo HD and specially Discovery HD - for example - the program on Italian gardens - not only it is pleasing to the eyes - its got excellent DTS western classical audio - nice way to test your speakers

I disconnected my hd pack immediately after IPL. Will get it when its time for next good series.

TS is crap, i came from hathway, when i change, i will go back to hathway. bucket load of channels for 250 per month.
