WiFi Router

But there is a catch, many ddwrt versions do not support ntfs over usb like mine model and moreover the usb device has to be manually mouted every time for many models via tge web admin page of the router. So as per me a combo of router with good throughput with usb nas devices like I mentioned earlier is much better.
I have shibby tomato . On my 2 usb ports one has 2TB NTFS drive which is auto mounted and available and supported fine . I didnot play with FS tables and is always auto mounting .
I have Media server/DLNA also running for HD streaming
But yes will a pain for people not used to editing FS tables for third party firmware which dont have auto mounting
On my second usb port I have 16GB pendrive drive with optware . This has 1gb swap and rest ext2 which has most of the music in 320kbps . FLAC not read by my smaller Sony HomeShare WIFI NASSV20i dock http://store.sony.com/p/NAS-SV20i/en/p/NASSV20I or http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HomeShare-NASSV20i-Network-services/dp/B004K1EODE
dd-wrt will have to check .....

We may be getting ahead of ourselves
The gentleman who started this query seemed to just want to use his new smart tv the fullest by getting a wireless network going

Something like a WD My Net N750 HD which is available on flipkart for Rs 6751 should suit his needs just fine (it comes with dual band N (2.4/5.0 Ghz) and 2 USB ports to connect external hard drives to share media)

Dunno which version you use but mine has option in the admin web page to automount on boot. Moreover optware also has automount script running at init.

A problem for wrt610n v 1 hardware based ddwrt. V2 is better. Auto mount option comes but you are lucky if automount happens.

I recently got a Tplink TL-WR1043ND. The reason i chose this was gigabit lan ports and possibility of using dd-wrt and comes with a price tag of 3660 on ebay. It also has a usb port which can take a storage or printer.
Blueray rips stream well over wireless now which my older router was not able to do.

I think this is subjective, how far is your router and tv and do they have walls in between?

Guys,

I have a solution worth considering.

I use a powerline Ethernet device Amazon.com: powerline ethernet, specifically this one
Amazon.com: WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit 200Mbps - extend Internet to your HDTV: Electronics

This connects to your internet device/wifi router in another room. and you connect the receiver to another power point in another room. You get a 200 MBps connectivity. without cables, wifi routers etc.

In fact I have a raspberry Pi with two hard drives connected to the source device and use a WDTV to play over this setup.

I get flawless coverage.

Yes, i have listed down my experience. As stated above, wireless streaming was not in my priority list when i bought that router, but that came as an added bonus.
My wd-tv player and router are in two different rooms with walls in between them.

I am currently hunting for a WiFi N router or the powerline device to solve the exact same problem. Basically I want to play 1080p content on my TV from my PC in a seperate room (via DLNA). The TV is quite far from the router and this obviously affects the performance and also the fact that I am using a trusted but old WRT54G router doesn't help.

As kuduku mentioned, having a dual band router should help. I would also ensure that I keep the streaming devices on a separate band and my everyday internet devices on the other band.

Generally speaking a N router (300) and above should satisfy the needs of the OP - hopefully he doesn't want to stream raw/unconverted 1080p over WiFi in which case there is still no guarantee with a N600 router (too many variables like distance, obstacles etc. I guess).

Also, as many people pointed out, wired is many times better than wireless.

@mad: It's interesting that you mention powerline technology.
I wanted to understand if the wiring in the house has any particular requirement for the powerline to work - I am in a rented apartment and have no clue of the wiring here and I wouldn't want to spend $60 for nothing.

@mad, is it 200MBps or 200 mbps? Although both a sufficient for HD Streaming. Also for powerline since they are not standard built into every device so you have to either maintain a router for normal wifi devices and powerline for HD streaming or you have to buy powerline adapters for every networked device you want on the network.

I have heard that having AirConditioners / Junction Boxes reduces the throughput of powerlines, is that correct especially when AC starts up.

@ankan, dual band looks great although in practice 5GHz band in 40 MHz mode (for 300 mbps and above speeds) only works over a shorter distance.

If one has a router with N150 and good performance over distance then one single band should work effectively for all needs of 720p video streaming and internet surfing / downloads at the same time. My modded router gives 7 to 10 MBps on the same floor even from corners and hence can host my ASUS OPlay Air in bedroom and net surfing all over the house at the same time.

Powerline ethernet works. I imported a set from Amazon only last month. I am using it in a rented house with 30 year old wiring. Works fine.

I don't know about interference from ACs but someone I know says OFDM (no clue what it means & haven't researched it) devices beat the interference.

Plus due to the unique nature of Indian wiring, high draw current (15A) is separate from the low dra 5A circuits.
In America (AFAIK) this is not the case, so I assume the newer technologies would be designed to work over high noise/draw circuits.

@haisaikat yes you need a separate WiFi router ( I have two... daisy chained as repeaters)

The link I gave above is a proper 4 port switch on both boxes.

On one end I have a Raspberry pi and the internet plugged in (from the wifi router) on the other end I have the TV, PS3, WDTV and TS+HD
Blows away the Wifi setup I had earlier.

@goodsound
try these also , they do require DIY
Global EasyBuy
They were designed for LG only but with a small wire mod they work with all HDTVs . There is a you tube of it and complete details are also available on slickdeals thread
They work in 5Ghz and excellent deal for 2200 . Basically you have to split a wire and tape it ....
here are link to study , check wiki it has everything
http://slickdeals.net/f/5641508-LG-AN-WL100-1080p-Wireless-Video-Kit-Transmitter-Receiver-20
http://slickdeals.net/f/5728262-LG-AN-WL100-Wireless-Media-Box-18-95-w-FS-All4Cellular

dont go for ishop route as they are heavy and will cost twice .

I have this router, its excellent in functionality, works with any WiFi client.. has dual band, linking my Sony Bravia HX850 was instant.

Only issue I noticed was that the signal is not as strong as advertised & doesnt go through two walls with enough strength, goes down to 3 bars instead of 5 in a distance of 10 metres.

Hmm .

But are you able to watch full HD movies using net? What is the solution then?
