Its small. Its costs a bomb. Its valve based. Its been on my list of equipment to buy ever since I heard it at another FM's place!

If all goes well it should be here in 15 days.

@sidvee, do you have any experience with this amp? I believe that there is a battery pack for it that take its performance up a notch.

Hi Malvai,
A friend of my mine owned the PLL a few years ago as part of an all Nagra setup. So when you hinted that it was small and was expensive, this was the first pre that crossed my mind. It is undoubtedly an excellent pre., and I had strongly considered it before my Lamm ll2.1. Not sure about the battery pack, though I believe the phono version PLP is battery driven.
Cheers,
Sid

Congratulations Malvai! What made you choose the PL-L?
Just read a little about this amp online ... interesting side connectors.

Congrats Malvai.

The Nagra is is great pre. Trust you have heard it and like the Nagra House sound.

Yup have heard it, did like it a LOT. It was in an all nagra set up with avant grade speakers! Very nice and open sound. Effortless !

So this Sunday, Bhagwan came in for a bit and heard the setup. He liked the sound, but more about that from him directly whenever he sees this thread.

He too believes that the Nagra PL-L will be a step in the right direction.

Hello - I did visit MM's place on Sunday;
Was too tight on time - so it was a 'rushed' visit.
I do have a bit to write about - I shall get to that in a bit.

Above is a picture with me @ MM's house.

I have been a Nagra following person for a while....
So, if any person buys Nagra - I am happy.
I like its sound.

Now to get to MM's Sound / Speaker / Gear / Room etc.

I will break this down into a few parts;

a]
Sound - This I will write about here...

I liked what I heard.
The basic tone was good.
The Bass Extension was good.

What I would like to see changed - a slight 'dip' in the speaker's performance - between 2.5K to 4K [frequency] Q3
Since this is an 'active speaker' all things can be altered & changed.
Also the current HF is a bit hot.
I attribute it to Power Lines / Cables / Connectors & basic routing of all wires.

If this is done - there will be a greater sense of 'ease' on those lines.

More later...

Speaker

I like what I saw.

This is a 'small room'

Yet it fits a speaker with a 16" diameter - fantastic.

Not a hint of boom.

The Fit & Finish is good too - specially since it is a made in India job.

I would have preferred a 'deeper' sound stage.
It was not playing more than 3 to 4 feet - front to back.
Also the width of the sound stage was a bit constrained.
Nothing was playing beyond the boundaries of the speakers.

These may be room issues - maybe work is needed on the side walls & there was too much absorption at the rear will - may need to be re-looked @

Slight work on the HF - as I mentioned in the earlier post & this could be a speaker to keep for a while...
plays loud - plays clean - musically satisfactory;;

c]
Gear

This is a place where I have a 'grouch'
There is so much here - stuff that may not be needed.
The room is small to start with & then it is cluttered.

There are TT's / Phono - Stages / etc. etc.
All lying around.

This room needs a 100 % re-vamp.

Fully emptied.
Cleaned / Vacuumed etc.
Then all the extra things that are not needed - must not be kept here.
Proper Listening Chair - Correct Height - No Movement possible etc. is needed.
Appropriate Rack / Stand is needed.
Power Supply to the room - needs to be 'dedicated' [has back up - but more]
The Sockets need to get 'better'
Good Power Cords are needed.
Basic Cables etc. need to go up - 2 to 3 levels.

I do hope MM is not disappointed with my comments - but there is room for change & that change is 100 % required.

Spending 15K on a Pre & then not having the right place / environment to keep it / play with it - I am not a strong supporter of that theory...

A Race Horse - Needs a Good Quality Stable !!
Always remember that;;
;)

d]
Room

I made a mistake - have posted Room under Gear - sorry.
So see this in a different context.
Please.

Front End.
I heard the TT.
I do not have the specifics off hand - I guess MM will chime in with that.
But, it was poor - below par.
Needs a lot of work.
I am no expert on TT's so I will stay out of this one.

On the Computer part;
MM is the 1st person I met that has a Mac & plays J River on it.
I do not know why ?

Use I Tunes & run t through Ammara or Pure Music [my preferred playback]
Also, all music should be Wave. Nothing else.

What was the USB CAble in use ?
I do not recall.
Goes to the Wyred DAC.
This is a good VFM DAC.
Super for the price.

From the DAC to the Accuphase - used as a pre - a compromise - but that will change in 2 weeks I suppose.
A serious pre will arrive - I like the Nagra a lot.

Cables - as mentioned - need to be re-visited / serious look [taar as it it called] !! This is very important & needs to be seriously addressed....please - MM do this. USB to Power Cords to Power Strips to I/C's etc.

Room Treatment - this is the last step.
But will be needed.
Floor - Carpet
Side Walls [ Absorption ]
Rear Wall [ Diffusion ]
Front Wall [ Diffusion & Partial Diffraction] etc.

Use Sound & About - Look them up.

Basically - All in All - I was happy.
The result for a DIY / Home Done / Commissioned Work - this is a super result.
I liked it a lot.

I am sure MM will make an effort to work on certain small things.
They do not need money.
They need effort & time.

If one looks into it on a serious front / there is a lot of improvement that is possible. imho.

Yet - I state it again.
I was happy.
It was worth my time.
I left the show @ 1430 on Sunday to go to the house of MM with the help of Mr. Vinay [truly thankful to him] & it was 100 % worth it.

Keep up the good work !

:eek:hyeah:
