I currently have an Onkyo 705 and use it in stereo mode with Dali Ikon 6.

I have started completing the Dali Ikon HT speaker set and have also considered upgrading my receiver.

The options I have narrowed down,
1) Anthem MRX 500 - this should be good for video, good for audio (music and movies) but only 100W continuous per channel and priced on the higher side
2) Any of the entry level Onkyo/Denon receivers as processors (currently Onkyo 708/Denon 3311) paired with an Emotiva XPA5 for amplification - this should be good for video and audio, and almost same price as Anthem 500 but with higher power output 200W continuous per channel
3) I could also just get the Emotiva XPA5 and continue with the Onkyo 705, letting the TV/Media Player do the up-scaling.

I am unable to decide and would like the opinion of a few more experienced HT aficionados.

Also for the sub-woofer - I do not want a big boomy sub, I'd prefer a small sub (8" or 10" driver) which has lots of detail and punch.
What would be good for this?
Which of these or any other would suit my purposes - B&W ASW610, B&W PV1, Klipsch RW-10D, Focal Dome Sub, Orb Super 8/Uber 10?

I will keep that in mind.

But what I want to know is - would it be better to pair the Emotiva XPA5 with a receiver like that or would the Anthem MRX500 be good all by itself?

Do consider rel subwoofer according to me it will suit your taste. In dts amp i prefer onkyo bet than denon and yam. Onk is better in music and ht also

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
