Asus O!Play Mini with DolbyTHD decoding, DTS HD-MA for just 3500!!

flaws getting exposed one by one....making me to rethink on jumping to buy the unit...

may be i am comparing it with the xtreamer
but for the price this is a VFM unit ie if you dont need HD audio as in my case here,

remote is easy to use activating subtitles ,selecting audio is quicker than the xtreamer, menu layout & menu options too are better in the mini
initial loading/reading time when external HDD connected is a little slower here in the mini

Okay So I got my Mini as well, And here is a short review from a Layman

Before i do that, let me mention that I dont have any experience with any other media player...

Setup

Its really easy to setup the entire thing, just take it out from the box and plug in an HDMI cable and connect it to your LCD/Plasma/LED

It gets automatically detected and all the files are scanned when it is plugged in for the first time, If you want to skip this step, you can go to the File manager view

The layout of the menu is fairly simple and easy to use, Has differrent options for Music, Movies, Firmware upgrade etc

I plugged in the unit to my Brand new panny 42x20d and didnt see any huge difference, Hence was sceptical about posting a review thinking i must have done something wrong. You know, didnt want to put the product down when I am not a subject matter expert :-)

Yesterday i realised that the video output is on PAL mode and not on HDMI, Once I changed this, the result was amazing, I played a file that was around 20GB and the player took it effortlessly,

Someone had asked to check for the audio output, Unfortunately I don't have a HT at this point to check it, Sorry!

So to sum it up:

Pros:
Excellent value at its price
Easy to setup
It played all formats indifferent of the size
Menu is simple and easy to use
Picture clarity is Excellent and no frozen images
If you open the same file again, system will ask if you want to continue from where you stopped last.

Cons:
The remote looks like it was assembled in 15 minutes
The keys are not responsive, Also Fast forward and rewind options sometimes get stuck
Only one HD out, Cannot attach anything else
It takes eternity for the unit to power off

Overall verdict

I am pretty happy with the unit considering the price and what it could do, To me all I wanted was a player that will play videos on my Plasma without any Fuss, This player does just that, If you want anymore details, Ask me please.

Thanks for the post !! How much did you buy it for?

I also bought the Asus O! Play Mini today , from nehru place.
It cost me Rs. 4200
Hdmi Cable - Rs. 150
Total Cost - Rs. 4350

Havent tested it to the max yet but played 3 Idiots & Prince Of Persia both 720p (.mkv) played perfect.

p.s.- will attach pics later

Can anyone tell me is there sound on LCD TV when it is connected wiht HDMI cable, and playing MKV file with DTS sound.

Dear Subhash,
I may sound silly, honestly advise me ... shall I go for LGBD550 at 6100/- or Asus oplay mini in case the size and portability is not an issue.... Though USB playability for LG is not clear so far
thanks in advance

ASUS O!Play MINI - HardwareZone.com
reports the following.....

Audio on the MINI, with its ability to crank out 7.1 surround audio DTS 2.0+, True HD and DTS-HD was also tested via the HDMI and the optical S/PDIF output and we are glad to report that it worked flawlessly.

But the actual review from Subhashji is against DTSHD capability....
Any setup trick by chance, u can give a through please

this depends on where you source your HD contents ,if you are going to rent and jst watch BD's then go for the BDP

But if you want to rip and store from the BD's + watch downloaded HD content from net definetly go for a Media player

Advantages of Media player with External HDD
store multiple movies/files and watch them @ your time
no need to worry about region coding of Bd's(thats if you plan to rip from BD's)
no loading time of discs as in BDP

But @ same time u may have to invest on BD drive or stick to watching downloaded content

minor issues will be there in the Media player with newer discs

hope this helps

thanks for link which very well favours HD audio pass thro
let me recheck and revert

anyway whats 2.0 DTS??

DTS 2.0 + DIGITAL OUT
DTS 2.0 + Digital Out denotes the dual ability to pass the DTS encoded digital bitstream to an external DTS decoder for playback as well as fold down the digital surround soundtrack for playback in a 2-channel environment through analog outputs.

this i got from yamaha site, hope it clears ur doubt

Could it mean that it played flawlessly (in Dolby/DTS 5.1) ?

this it does
multichannel audio (DD/DTS) is output as 2 channel thro analog outputs

A FEW corrections on my earlier review of the O play mini

reconnected the unit to my main set up

i confirm that the unit does Pass thro Dolby True HD but it does not support pass thro of DTS HD
(earlier i had not tested with Dolby true hd had only chkd with DTS HD)

do not know how the review in the link claims pass thro of both, have tried with all kinds of settings yet the unit did not pass thro DTS HD it was downmxd to DTS

@ MGdelhi it downplayed flawlesly in DTS 5.1
