I feel really elated seeing so many guys happy. Hope you all build your speakers successfully.
The carpenter I'm chasing is turning out to be too elusive for me to catch up. He was to return on Monday but still out of station. So I started my hunt for an alternative source. My inquiries revealed that the source of all those boxes on Richie street are at a place called "Choolai". I went in search of this source yesterday evening after office hours. I had carried along copies of cabinet drawings of X-MTM, X-SLS, X-LS, X-CS, A/V 1RS, Sealed box for SW12-04 and Sand filled sealed box for SW12-04 along with pictures of these kits both 'work in progress' and fully finished.
That place was full of Timber and Plywood shops. After inquiring at several places, I located where all the speaker boxes of Richie street are made. They are a bunch of one room workshops located in a Temple complex near Choolai market. Most of them are dumb guys and do not understand any technicalities.
I finally caught up with the smartest of them all, so to speak. All these guys do contract work for the shop walas of Richie Street. The smartest one does the work of one such shop which happens to be well known in Richie street. Though the workshops are theirs, their working capital requirement is taken care by these shop walas and hence they are not willing to take order directly for the fear of antagonising the shop walas. "You will walk away with your goods but what after that? My Richie Street client would rebuke me for taking order directly" was their restraint. He gave me the contact details of the Richie steeet wala.
Disappointed, I headed to Richie Street and met him. After going through the drawings, he said that making those are beyond the capabilities of his workers and suggested another person who makes better quality boxes.
That person was none other than a dealer of AV equipment who also makes speakers and the one I had pursued sometime back and abandoned due to lack of response. Theirs is a family business and I was interacting with his brother whereas this guy is directly responsible for making the boxes. He took the drawings and promised to get back to me within a couple of days.
Apparently, there are no one who is doing veneer in Chennai. The choices given by him are laminate and paint, the latter being a much more expensive option. For example, just painting of the X-MTM towers would apparently cost about 8K.
Will update the thread once I get some info.
