tl;dr version..

  • - bought wharfe 9.6 for fronts (from fellow FM abracher9)
  • - avr is marantz 6006
  • - room is L shaped. Room size is 25'x16'(excluding the 11x5' L portion at the back). More details and floor plan about the room in this thread
  • - need suggestions for speaker wires for fronts and center. Nothing too expensive please. Just enough for my modest setup.
  • - need suggestions for Center speakers to match with 9.6 fronts. Choices are wharfe 10.CM, 102c (both huge and expensive), and 10.CS (much cheaper, smaller but with smaller drivers too). Or something else?
  • - need suggestions for surrounds. Currently interested in either Bipoles (wharfe 10.dfs, polk Fxi A4) or BS (Diamond 121). Would like to spend as little as I need to.
  • - need suggestions for sub (room size appx 4000 cubic feet). Budget is 25-30k max. Didn't like polk psw 110 or 125 or wharfe pc12 (bit better than polk though). Will DIY give me better results for same (preferably lower) budget? Don't really like droning bass though.

After seemingly endless journey to find a good pair of fronts for my 5.1 setup, and realizing I probably will end up getting something and then regret it a few months later, I finally decided to stop wasting time and go with a safe choice. ie a pair of used wharfedale 9.6 from fellow FM abracher9. Tried the speakers with my marantz 6006 at his place and liked the sound enough to bring them home with me :yahoo:
Went the used route as I'm totally new to the world of hifi. This way I won't lose too much if I end up getting bit by the upgraditis keeda. Hopefully, won't need to replace them anytime soon though. :)

Now time to finish rest of the setup. :D

First of all, speaker wires. Don't want to waste too much on the wires (as I probably won't even know the difference in the end). Just something which will be fine enough without costing a bomb.

Second, Center speaker. Getting a Center speaker for 9 series will be pretty hard I guess so am looking at either the diamond 10.cs, 10.cm or the new diamond 102c. Which one should I get?
The 10.CM looks like the best match for 9.6 (on paper) but at 9" high, its freakin huge! Due to some misunderstanding with the carpenter, he left only 6" (instead of 8" I had told him to) in height for Center speaker in the cabinet below TV. It's open ended at the top though so I can put a bigger speaker but it won't look as neat. And will probably be hiding about an inch of the projection screen behind it (can't be sure until I move to my new room in a month).
Next option is the new diamond 102c, which is an inch smaller and slightly costlier. Kind of inclined towards this one as I might be interested in replacing the fronts with diamond 156 (like the design, slot loaded port etc, atleast on paper) of the same series once they're available in India (just a thought only so far though).
Last option would be 10.CS. 8" high and a much more cheaper option than the other two but smaller woofers. Was hoping to keep the Center as powerful as I can.
Which one should I get? Audition is not possible as its not possible to carry these huge fronts with me.

Next would be surrounds and subs but those I won't buy until I've moved into my room in a month or so. Will see if I can get a demo of both Bipoles (considering wharfe 10.dfs and polk fxi4) and BS (diamond 121) in my room as still not sure which I should get. FMs suggested to get bookshelves but Denny at Bass n treble recommended Bipoles instead (both suggestions based on my listening position and L shaped rooms). Sub will be my last purchase. So no hurry for those but please feel free to suggest something within 25-30k max for my room size (470 square feet, 4000 cubic feet appx). I don't really want droning bass but the few I tried in my budget (polk 110, wharfe pc12 and one sub from MS) all sounded boomy to me so may have to live with that.

Is DIY sub recommended? As long as the end budget is same or less and the sub looks good enough to put in my room, I'm interested if the results are going to be much better than my current options. Will get my carpenter to do the wood work and have another handyman who's quite experienced in electronics (ie knowledge of how stuff works, sordring etc) but has never done anything like this. Will go through the DIY forum myself too and see if its something for me or not.

I have the 10 cs and heard the 10cm. What i can tell you for sure is that the 10 CM needs loads of power to drive it. Im not sure abt marantz amps, but my 671 nor 473 yamahas seemed enough to do the job on a 10 CM.
The CS is a nice center but nothing gr8. Though it still scores higher than the kef and polk audio counterparts. Since anyways u aint getting the same series center, try getting ur hands on a Paradigm cc-290. Thats an awesome center...

While I'm not getting the speakers from the same series, I doubt the sound sig changes too much between 9 and 10 series especially with the Center. The diamond 102c on the other hand I have no idea. Won't mind getting paradigm or something else but auditioning with my setup is impossible so can't take a chance unless someone has done a similar experiment and was happy with the results

Edit: I do plan to add something like an emotiva amp (xpa 3) sometime in the future (a year or so) btw. Nothin set in stone though. Definitely not unless the marantz leaves me wanting for more. Don't intend to turn up the volume too much so might not need extra power.

My fronts r the paradigm mini monitors and center is the wharf 10 cs :rolleyes:
Reason being, i didnt quiet like the center 1 of paradigm which falls in line with mini monitors and the cc-190 is discontinued. CC-290 would have been an overkill for me. But for me the order of preference was cc-290> 10 cm > cc-190 > 10 cs > center 1 > polk/kef similar league centers.
Trust me it was a nightmare auditioning the center cause my paradigms r seriously loud whilst the wharfs r a bit laid back, but at the crazy price i got the CS for, it just worked out well in the end.

But trust me on this, CM needs a lot of power to drive em whilst the paradigms dont.

Just checked out the paradigm Center and looks like its not for me. It won't fit in the tv cabinet. Height is fine and could have been a ill more too but width is almost 27". I only left 24" width for the Center speaker space in the cabinet. Never thought I could need anything more than 2 feet wide! Wow!

How about aviano 5? Heard good things about it on the forums here. No idea how it'll go with wharfes though. Availability is an issue for this one but seems to be available at technoguru still. Still kind of want to stick with wharfe Center though. If 10.cm is too much for it then ill have to go with 10.cs (as 102c probably isn't going to be any better with marantz avr either).

What did u pay for the cs btw?

DIY sub is recommended more so for center. Why not make your own center and surround. I was budget constraint and hence went that way. I have procured the drivers but haven't started the cabinet build yet. Working on the designs with lots of calculation.

There are great drivers available for the job. Look at some Peerless from diyaudiocart website.

I have procured the lowest possible drivers which I won't recommend to you. It suffice my requirement of cinema viewing.

What did u pay for the cs btw?

You should be able to get one at Rs 16000 - 10/12.5%.
I got mine for much lesser, 2 days used, for the person decided to go for a higher series.

for the centre buy the biggest you can afford. its usually the weakest link in a HT. i have a dali ikon center but i dont see that mixing with your setup. u shud get the diamond center only. for wires and hdmi , u can buy profigold hdmi cables and bandridge copper wires for the speakers. rates as follows :

bandridge speaker cable 2.5mm gauge = 200 mtr X Rs. 125/mtr = 25000
Profigold hdmi cable 15 mtr = 2 X Rs. 12800/each = 25600
Dac coaxial reel (for the woofer)= 50 mtr X Rs. 60/ mtr = 3000

my hdmi cable lengths were absurdly long so i chose the slightly premium cables. but they work very well with my epson projector. i put in 2 cables so that even if one goes bad, i dont need to pull another one. not sure how well this decision pays off !!

u can get a good price for the diamond equipment on the hifimart. they are specialised dealers for same and have good prices.

Wow! That's a lot spent on just cables

I using a 15 meter liberty grandview hdmi cable with the epson PJ and so far it has worked without issues. Paid about 5500 for it and thought I overpaid for that one!

2.5m is 12 guage, right? I've seen FMs recommending 16 or 18 guage max for fronts and Center as they aren't placed too far away from the receiver/amp. 12 guage might be required for surrounds though.

And yeah, trying to stick with wharfe as Center only. Still not sure which one to get. Might end up with 10.cs only mostly coz its the cheaper option

you are absolutely right about the hdmi cable cost i have paid ! i have overpaid on that one but its fine considering that the next higher levels are monster etc which are more than 3 times the cost.

any.....yes any.... hdmi cable will do the job.
its digital signal
however for speaker cable ...costlier..better...we have to choose at an optimum...considering budget and conneted macjines..

anyway..to op...can u carry your amp and audition some centres...thats best way to judge your liking..
try
usher,kef..off course wharfe 10.....sonodyne avant

Auditioning will be difficult. Bass n treble is the only dealer of wharfedale in delhi (afaik) and they didn't have any wharfedale centers the last time I was there. Will have to go blind here.

okay then take audition of other brands..which is possible..
at least you will get a clear idea of your liking.
imo usher is a less famous brand..but sound fantastic

The Diamond 9 center (don't remember which) is still available @ 14k. At least, its listed on the product catalog of the distributor.

That's 9.CS. Seems to be available in hifimart too. Might go with this instead of 10.cs and save a bit too. Still contemplating if 10.cm would be a better choice here...

10 cm is way better than the CS. I was simply asking you if ur current amp can drive the CM to its full potential. And the cm is HUGE...

That's what I don't know. No idea if my marantz 6006 will be able to play nice with the 10.cm. And yes, it's huge! Width and depth are fine for me as the cabinet is 24"x18"x"6" (WxDxH) but the 10.cm's height at 9" is I'm afraid going to look very very odd. Might need to make a dummy model of 10.cm's dimensions and see how bad it looks. But then again, still no idea if marantz will be able to drive it or not :/

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
