DIY Guru's,

I'm learning to solder and in the process of acquiring some basic tools as a gradual step ahead want to take up an easy-beginner project. I'd really like to make CMoy pocket headphone amp as my first project.

Here's a list of components I'd need, can I find these in local market in Delhi ? because ordering these from mouser.com etc is not cost effective as the shipping alone is $ 60-70 USD.

Also, is it an appropriate project for a total newbie like me who's still learning to solder ?

Any help / advice is highly appreciated.

220 F/35 V electrolytic capacitor, radial leads X 02 pc
0.1 F polypropylene film cap (large!) X 02 pc
10 k? 1/4 W metal film resistor X 01 pc
4.7 k? 1/4 W metal film resistor X 02 pc
100 k? 1/4 W metal film resistor X 02 pc
1 k? 1/4 W metal film resistor, gain 11 X 02 pc
10 k? 1/4 W metal film resistor X 02 pc
Dual op-amp OPA2132PA or dual op-amp OPA2132P or dual op-amp: OPA2134PA
Power indicator LED, red diffused, 3mm X 01 pc
Stereo mini jack in-out (3.5mm) X 02 pc
Protoboard (recommended type) X 01 pc

Many Thanks

You should be able to get the parts at nehru place.
not sure about the opamp though. if you cant find it, you can get ne5532, costs some 10-15 bucks each. mono version is 5534.

^^Sweet !

Do I have to use any specific lingo or just ask for these with their no. I mean 220 uf, 1 Kohm etc, also how many pieces of each should I get ? as I'm certain I'll spoil a few before the end product.

Local for protoboard please ?

For resistors ask - 1% MFR quarter watt (each value) five pieces minimum each. Because each 5 pieces will cost you Rs 2.

Electrolytic capacitor 220uF/35V by default you get radial leaded. Here you can ask minimum quantity 1. Approx price max Rs 5 each.

Film cap 0.1 uF/250V will cost 10-25rs each, Here you can ask minimum quantity 1. Ask Panasonic brand or buy online from element 14.

3mm red LED for 50paise each. Here you can ask minimum quantity 2.

Stereo jack Rs 10-15.

Ask for OPAMP socket for good quality Rs 4.

Ask general PCB, dotted, small Rs 10.

OPAMPs online.

You are done!

I have a cheap 35w solder iron and off late when I try to tin, the solder doesnt stick it balls up, have tried to dip the hot iron in flux paste and tin immediately, even sanded the tip with 120 no. grit paper - dip in flux - tin, nothing works.

Shall I get a soldron iron with fine tip or is there anything I could do to make the existing iron work better ?

Use a Goot 35W (manufactured by Taiyo Electric, Japan) soldering iron with a ceramic tip - never file or sand this tip. The tip surface is kept clean with just a slight touch to a moist sponge, nothing else. For flux, use clear liquid flux available at most electronics markets (don't use the waxy solid flux sold in those shoe-polish boxes). Soak a drop of liquid flux onto a piece of paper towel/tissue, and use the tissue to wipe the cleaned surfaces/leads to be soldered. Solder immediately after that, and you will get a very shiny, bright, smooth bead.

Will try and find a Goot 35W iron in the local market tomorrow when I go to pick up other parts for my build if I dont find it then I'll try to get Soldron [respected Indian mfg.] also will pick up a good quality spool of 60/40 solder wire with rosin core.

Have been using the same "wembley" shoe polish type packed flux/wax and terrible solder wire. Also, shall I get IP alcohol for local chemist ?

Any local brand for liquid flux also how much for Goot 35W if available locally, price indication will surely help.

Is volume pot and potentiometer the same thing ? please suggest a good quality volume pot/knob preferably the one which turns off on lowering volume or how to identify a good quality knob/pot.

Many Thanks

Approx 450/- Rs two months back.

They are same and you can get volume pot with on-off switch. But its better to keep both separate. There are different known brands and some no-brands. Stay away from no-brands.

External Flux????? Are we still living in the 1940's? If using an iron of low wattage (less than40) You must keep the tip clean and hot. Wet a sponge, and wipe the tip prior to each use. Then tin, then wipe, then apply heat to the joint.

You must have quality solder too. 60/40% Sn/Pb with multicore rosin flux inside. You will not need liquid or paste flux with multicore solder. Don't scrimp on the solder. Get the good stuff from Farnell or RS.

Good luck with your headbanger headphone amp.

^^ Thanks Moviela !!

I'll get there eventually, unable to get time off from work during the week to get components for my project. Local shopkeepers only stock BOOM solder wire which is what I'm using I don't know how bad is it as I haven't used any other retails for rs 60/- 50gm spool neither could I find liquid flux locally.

I've bought almost all the items required for this build.
The amp I could find in the market is LM324N have my doubts whether it'll fit in this application.
I bought 10 pc of Resistors in each value and now they're mixed up.
I've tried using an android app to check their values with color coding but I feel it isn't foolproof, will a multimeter help ?

PCB I have is similar to this hope it'll suffice.

I've been looking at all this stuff since day before yesterday don't really know where to start or should I start at all :o

Although flux cored solder is available and produces fine results. External flux is definitely better for getting a good finish to the joints. It is also essential for good due soldering.

For the cmoy you can order a PCB from jds labs.
