DIY 10 Inch Subwoofer

I dont have any of the above instrument to measure impedance. Secondly what do you think about a normal cotton, Can we use it for damping?
Normal cotton is quite dense and its non-uniform in density though its good for stuffing. Polyester cotton is better because they are uniform and the Recron Brand (Reliance industry) is quite consistent imo.

Hello @sadik ,

Good going as usual!
I have a question: When is a sealer used and when is a putty?

The Low ends are Boom & not like thump. Is this good? Sadik

I am giving a personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt.
Booming is often noticed if the enclosure size is smaller than that required. It makes vocals difficult to understand and causes fatigue. Stuffing will not reduce it. You will have to use a parametric EQ to find the center freq and reduce its gain.

Ravindra.

Hello @sadik ,

Putty is used to fill big dents/holes. For example, I have used screws to make this enclosure, the holes are chamfered on top so that the head of screw goes a little deep from the surface of plywood, Therefore to hide the screw head putty should be used.

In MDF, I used nails to built the box, I punch at the head of nail to push it little deep from top surface, the punching creates dents on top surface which cannot be leveled by sealer. So here a putty should be used to cover up dents mark created by punching on nail head.

Sealer is used to seal the edges / surface of MDF / Wood so that when paint is applied it will not absorb it.

The reply against Mr. Hari post, I said the sound is boom. I was referring this boom like... lower notes are deep which sounded sweet to me.
This is active sub-woofer and has frequency selector POT ranging from 40 Hz to 150 Hz, hence the frequencies above 150 Hz will not be played by this Sub, So here there is no need to worry for the Vocals.

I don't quite agree to this. Adding stuffing does make the enclosure "appear" bigger to the driver. I myself have measured this using woofer tester. However a point to note, adding stuffing will affect the efficiency of the enclosure. Like Hari sire said stuffing would help but if added in a controlled way.

Here is an article on benefits of stuffing Vs no stuffing the enclosure - https://data-bass.com/data?page=content&id=79

Think, below the subwoofer range of 100Hz (or) lower it seems to have no benefit per the above article..
If you read the article, the Author does acknowledge the fact that damping does bring down the Impedance and the resonant frequency. If you measure the Qts as well you will see a decrease in Q after damping. The only point the author tries to make is that the system efficiency will go down (max output). You can easily simulate the effect of damping in WINISD by playing around with internal damping parameter (Qa).

Hello @venki7744 and @elangoas

I agree to the points in posts 64 to 66.
Personally, I not look to stuffing as primary means to reduce booming.

I personally like to use glasswool on alternate sides of a sealed enclosure so that energy associated with the air, bounced of the enclosure sides, causes minimal to no speaker cone movement.

Most ported enclosures in the market, even branded ones, are stuffed with white synthetic wool.
Personally, I do not use any stuffing, in a ported enclosure, as I want enclosed air to have an easy passage out after phase reversal.

If you have a system in a feedback loop with visual indication, you can adjust stuffing to tailor the response to your taste, This is fine too.

Regards,

Ravindra.

Am not a DIYer, also limited understanding of technical terms. Only if the impedance drops too much, there would be a problem.. If there is a spike in impedance, is that a cause of concern?..

I am also not an expert DIYer (and expert in general :)) but IMO impedance peak is usually associated with resonance, if it does, the Frq response would show a peak in that region (which could also create a bump in the frequency response if the effective Q is high). But as you said lower Impedance would be a greater problem (from amps perspective).

Today's Update:

Sanding of enclosure is completed, Fitted the Open Grill of sub woofer as well as the additional MDF baffle which i made to give some good looks to the vent. Finishing of this is pending need to fill up the nail punch marks with putty. Below are the photos.

Great to see Sadik :D

Does the thickness of additional front baffle incrwase the port length?? Its not very thick. But technically it increases port length I'm guessing.

Hi,

May be little off topic, could you please tell how this method of finishing a MDF speaker box using putty+sanding+paint , compares with using docolom/laminates or veneer on MDF and polishing on top of it?
Are there any other methods for finishing MDF boxes?
What are pros and cons of each of them.

First Fill up big dents with putty and then follow this Painting Procedure. You can search on youtube for videos on this topic.

thanks for the info..
also what are pros and cons of this painting job vs using docolom/laminates/veneer on the MDF?
in terms of look/maintenance/durability/"ease of properly doing for a new diyer"

From my Point of View, Painting may be easy for a new DIYer. You don't need to have compressors and all to do the Job, One can do it even by roller brush. But again i would like to specially mention that if you are looking for some mirror finish then it is very difficult task, as right from the base you have to take great care of your enclosures.

For Veneer and laminates one should have proper experience in cutting sheets, The cuts should be very precise when applying a veneer / laminate as you have to align the texture on all corners which is really a very hard task and requires good experience.

Laminates may are more durable then Paint and Veneers as their surface is hard and may not get damaged easily where as Paint & Veneers are soft and are easy to get damaged by small accidents.

Can you provide some specific youtube links, Looking for something similar to what you did (sorry I am bad at searching :().

Just search using words like, "sealing mdf edges", "mdf preparation for hi gloss finish", use a specific words related to your search, once you open the link you will find more supporting videos. keep watching them
