Emerson Liebert GXT MT+ on line UPS

It provides clean and stable power and can handle sudden power surges as it has OVCD (Over Voltage Cut-off Device).

Yes, I run it through Belkin Ultimate Series - 8 socket surge protector...I have 2 of them connected for all of my equipment.

Not sure how good they are for lightning...

These surge protectors are not upto snuff for lightning strike. You need whole house surge protectors (type 1 SPD's to be installed on the line side of the main service disconnect overcurrent device but these are for industrial buildings).

For low voltage applications like as in residences (not tall apartment buildings which need lightning arresters and different ball game in itself), type 2 SPD's are to be installed in each electrical switchboard, it prevents the spread of over-voltages in the electrical installations and protects the loads from indirect lightning strikes. ABB india makes them (OVR PLUS N1 40 is the applicable model). Eaton India makes them too but they have to import and not very responsive to small orders. If you have a cellphone tower or a lightning rod on a building less than 50 metres from your house, then type 1 SPD's may have to be installed too.
Always consult an electrical safety consultant (not a plain vanilla electrician).

The ones you have are the type 3 spd's (i.e surge strips, plug-in types). These are to be installed at a minimum length from the electrical service panel, unless they are evaluated at a Nominal Discharge Current Rating of 3 kA minimum. The type 3 SPD's should be used as complementary to type 2 SPD's.

South and Eastern parts of India have medium lightning strike densities compared to North and western part of India according to Schneider electric surveys.

Ok. I am not too worried about lightning as I never had any issue till date. Its not a big problem in Mumbai. Moreover in case of heavy rains and lightning in monsoon, I do disconnect the HT equipment from mains.

i dont think OVCD can protect against instantaneous surges
(lightning surges included)

the cut offs rarely work on surges that last fractions of a second
only a good MOV will be able to take those on

Let me know what's your take on this info I have come across:

A video which shows how MOV fails and why OVCD makes all the difference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt5a_NLCF5k

Some Features OVCD

Neutral open protection (Protection up to 440 volts)
Withstands up to 6000V spikes
Smart start
Under/over voltage protection
No wave form distortion
Lightweight , transformer-less design
Compact size.

How it works.
OVCD is connected at before the equipment in use.

Incoming current will first pass through OVCD then into the equipment. OVCD continuously monitors the line voltage.

Whenever the voltage is above or below the set voltage limits the OVCD simply cuts the voltage to the equipment thereby saving it from the line disturbance. It reacts within fraction of second to the disturbance. OVCD will withstand the voltage even as high as 440 Volts. It however does not stabilize the voltage as in the case of other devices in the same category like Stabilizer, CVTs.

When the voltage returns to normal , the OVCD resumes the supply to the equipment with short power-on delay of 3 seconds(configurable). This feature is called the Smart Start. It prevents the initial harmful transient that may damage the Equipment.

Surges can be classified of 2 types with respect to source of surge as lightning,
1. Indirect strikes (Surge protectors can help and usually does). Most common and widely used is MOV based.
2. Direct strikes (Your device is toast!!! No device known to mankind can protect you here. Voltage can be from 10's of thousands to 100's of thousands of volts. Absolutely nothing can protect from direct strikes!).

Its worthy to note that Indirect strikes are a moderate to rare event. Direct strikes are very very rare.
Surge protection is usually needed for protection against devices within your home. Over 80% of surges originate from withing our home (Refrigerator, motor, ect).

absolutely correct

I too never used to worry about lightning until after one stormy night when I found my Philips hifi system not turning on. My pc survived as it was connected through a surge protector which was found in burnt condition. So, as Murphy's law says, Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

OVCD is very different to surge protection. They work very differently.
There are devices that deal with both Over / Under Voltages along with surges. They are not the same thing and employ different techniques.
There are different kinds of power problems and different solutions to each.

That utube video looks like it shows a device whose average voltage is increased. High average voltage is different to a narrow high voltage/current spike. The video does NOT show what happens to the same device, running through that OVCD device with high voltage or current spike, which is a different beast.

Surgex is truly one of its kind as it can protect upto 6,000 volts, 40000 amperes discharge current and is non MOV based. It can cost 20k but is streets ahead of any other product. This can only help in indirect lightning strike protection.

True, no device can protect against a direct strike but the strike can be managed by proper earthing systems, air terminals and down conductors to protect structures against direct strikes

In built ?
I dont think so!
I guess, 6 batteries external you need to connect to it.

There are 2 types. Standard battery model and External battery model.
Below is the 3kVA standard battery model with 3+3 batteries.

The circuit boards etc., are on the other side (2nd pic).
